  1. Never trusted the A7 series autofocus enough to shoot video with it. Always used manual lenses and I was using the A7Rii which is supposed to have better AF than the A7Sii. If you really want to shoot Sony you'll need to stop down. The added dof will only lead to many out of focus shots otherwise. Good luck.
  2. To my eyes the colors coming from the 1DX Mkii look great. I can push the footage more than enough when grading and it holds together. I honestly do not see any reason to give up 60p and DPAF plus spend an extra $2K, for a imagined gain in color gamut, when the 1DX Mkii does not lack in this department. But that said each person has to decide what's important to them. I do know the difference of DPAF and 60p are readily apparent and can help tell the story. Tools that effect the way a story is portrayed trump slight differences in color science. And once that footage is compressed and put on YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix or played back on 99% of TVs any advantage of increased color gamut (if any) will be all but lost. However, 60p will still render as slow-motion, or give less motion blur... and DPAF will still keep your shots in focus. The reduced rolling shutter will also continue to be of value. These seem like more compelling features to me, but then again I'm more concerned with enhancing my ability to tell my story than a spec sheet.
  3. I think the blues coming out of the 1DX Mkii are plenty good. Cinematic? Motion maybe... movement yes... lighting certainly... Color? I'm calling BS on that. And before you attempt to explain... what about Black and White movies? Not "Cinematic"? Really?
  4. A bit off topic, but I didn't want to start a new thread just for this. I'm trying to edit the amount of lines of text that are displayed in the "reveal" text template that is included with FCPX. I cannot seem to find a way to alter the transform without altering the size of the text in the group. I just switch over to FCPX from Adobe, any ideas?
  5. In my experience Sony makes good consumer grade cameras. My A7Rii did need the occasional reboot. While I had no major issues with it, I never got fooled into considering it a tool for professional work. Though I know some do use it for exactly that purpose. My Canon is as expected rock solid. No rebooting, just works. Granted, there can be problems with any camera, but I believe there is a reason that Canons are considered workhorses.
  6. Don't kid yourself, these are consumer grade cameras with consumer grade service.
  7. The 1DX Mkii with C-Log will not threaten the entire Cinema EOS line any more than the 1DC did. It you need a hybrid you buy a hybrid, likewise if you need a traditional Camcorder with XLRs, NDs etc...
  8. I don't think his approach is ideal, but clearly the purpose of the video was to elicit a reaction. Amusing, nonetheless. I do not think anyone has the right to attack him or his property for filming. As many have said they can simply leave.
  9. We have the X3 Osmo, and would love to have a more capable camera as an option. I'm not gonna jump on it yet. I need to see more footage before I am convinced. Looking forward to seeing your footage once you have had a chance to play with it.
  10. Since we got the 1DX Mkii we have been using FCPX and found the switch from Adobe to be quite painless. It seems FCPX can achieve the same results as Adobe with less effort and is less taxing on the computer hardware. Working with the MJPEG files in Adobe was not a great experience.
  11. It's very clear you are stating the above as a comparison to a camera that is not in the comparison. The 1DX Mkii uses a different sensor, so nothing other than the aforementioned is "very clear". In my personal testing I am seeing considerably more DR by using Technicolor.
  12. We are testing out Technicolor Cinestyle and recently shot a TV pilot with it. Our experience was that it allowed for more flexibility when it came time to color grade.
  13. You do realize that this test is not comparing the 1DC to the 1DX Mkii... it is comparing the 1DC to the 1DC using c-log. So all this proved is that the 1DC has more DR than the 1DC... rolleyes.
  14. Being seperate lines in no way implies their will be a Mkii. As I understand it the 1DC did not sell well. Case in point, did you buy one? I can recall a lot of people tearing the XC10 apart also, but it turns out it was pretty good after all. Most of those that have not used this camera will have a hard time understanding what a great content capture device it truly is. I can safely say it is my favorite all around camera at this time. It's great for stills and video. Yes, there are other cameras that can take higher resolution stills, and there are cinema camera with more dynamic range. But the 1DX Mkii strikes a good balance. And when compared to the 1DC imo represents a much better value.
  15. Indeed. I honestly could care less about paper specs. I for one could not be happier with the images produced by this camera. It is more than could enough to capture a compelling story.

  17. Over the Memorial Day weekend we decided to pop over the San Francisco. I figured it would be a good opportunity to have a little fun with the 1DX MkII. We are still getting use to the camera but so far really like it. The batteries last a long time. I would generally get between 1-2 days out of each. I was also testing out a Zacuto Marauda... It helps but I definitely need practice to master it. I might end up returning the Zacuto and going with the Rhino Rig, which I expect to have in hand next week. I think the Rhino Rig should be more stable and can break down pretty small also. FYI: I also had a chance to stop by Sammys Camera and check out the Canon 11-24mm... It's an impressive piece of glass. I will have some test shots with that bad boy later on. I forget the exact settings, but I know in a few of the shots I was pushing the ISO in excess of 8,000 and it seemed to hold up pretty well. I know that some of you dislike the new color profile, but I personally love it. I did load some flat picture styles onto the camera, but don't think I used them in these clips. Sorry for the clipping of the audio, I just wanted to throw this up so you could all see what it looks like in the hands of a non-pro. Canon_1DX_MkII_-_San_Francisco.mov
  18. So you predict double the price for the added C-Log and a "C" emblem... I'll pass. Technicolor gets pretty close as is. Just not feeling double the money for essentially the same camera... which was the case for the current 1DC vs the 1DX Mk1. In any case, all the Canon reps I have asked and heard have stated the 1DC Mkii is not gonna happen. At the end of the day the best camera to shoot with is the one you have/can get. Waiting for a fantasy will not get the shot done.
  19. Well well welll, I called the 855 number and I have to ask.... Did you? Because the person on the other end said he had not heard that the 1DC was out of production, but also stated to his knowledge the 1DX was still in production. When I asked him if their were plans for a 1DC Mkii has said he believed the 1DX MkII was a replacement for both cameras. So all those waiting for a 1DC Mkii are going to be in for a disappointment. Being seperate lines in no way implies their will be a Mkii. As I understand it the 1DC did not sell well. Case in point, did you buy one?
  20. Canon did state that the 1DX Mkii is meant as a replacement for the 1DC.
  21. There's a point where the image is good enough, and at that point other factors come into play, such as 60p and DPAF. Like many have said there's no point in slightly more DR if you missed the shot. To each their own. But I much prefer the ability to easily nail focus to a negligible difference in picture quality at the extremes. Out of focus shots are immediately apparent, and effect the ability to tell your story. Slow motion 4k is a powerful story enhancing tool. A slight increase in detail in the shadows is not going to impact the story to any great extent. It's really that simple.
