Canon 1D X Mark II high ISO and colour performance worse than predecessor
DBounce replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Can the 1DC can't do this at 60p? Nope. 1DX Mkii is superior and a much better stills camera also. -
Well in that case you may have come about as close as possible. But why the different resolutions? I agree that 1080p is nothing special on the 1DX MKii, but so far I like all the 4k that I have captured.
-
Yes, I know that this is the case and it is next on my testing agenda... Once I have a little time to put something together I will post my findings. Strangely, I never use crop mode on the Sony even though it is reported to be better. I just didn't notice a huge difference between that and full frame mode.

Seems reasonable.

Thanks for the appreciation. I don't know about "super noisy", I think it's pretty clean at 8k iso, but I need to do more testing to confirm that. In my night testing i think i kept it at 3200 iso. In all honesty I'm pretty happy if I can get 6400 clean from most cameras as I'm lighting my scenes. But let me put it this way, side by side, at the same iso value, the 1DX Mkii has been cleaner than the Sony A7Rii. However, let me preface that by saying, I have yet to test the A7Rii in APS-C mode verses the Canon. So perhaps the Sony can redeem itself in the high iso test using crop mode? One thing I am absolutely certain of its that my best footage from the A7Rii is not as good as what the Canon can do. The Sony is handily outclassed. Of course you have to factor price into the equation. Sony aimed to hit a balance between performance vs cost. I think in that regard the Sony is a solid buy. Ib don't think you're anti Canon... I think your anti single camera angle:-)

All three are color graded. My 1DX Mkii looks nothing like this out of the box. But I certainly I could grade it so people look like martians. Also, this footage is shot at 1080p 30/mbps, far from the best mode to shoot on the 1DX Mkii. You are easily convinced. I own the Canon and the Sony, and I can tell you that shooting with both cameras in their highest quality modes will show the 1DX Mkii to be far superior... It's not a close contest... There is no contest. If you want to see what both cameras do out of the box, at their highest quality settings, with the same white balance, using the same lens... then look at the test I did here. In the video I do not color grade to match, instead I drop a preset from SpeedGrade on both camera's footage, and add a vignette, just to see how both files handle it. Further down someone tries to match the look. Matching looks is of no interest to me, as if I wanted to match a B-cam I would simply buy another 1DX Mkii and use it as the B-cam. I simply did this test to show what both could do all things being equal... same lens, iso, lighting conditions, highest settings etc...

They don't... The Canon is in a whole other class. Even in low-light where most cameras will struggle, the 1DX Mkii finds focus. It really is... and I mean this... a game changer.

I'll agree with some effort and careful grading you can get them reasonably close. I guess my point is that many were stating that the A7Rii/Sii were superior in various aspects. In practice I am simply not seeing this to be true. Of the two cameras the 1DX Mkii is in a different league than the Sonys. It is more reasonable image wise to compare this camera to the FS7, but of course the two are completely different animals. One being a dedicated Video camera, the other a hybrid. There are benefits of having built in NDs, XLRs, etc... For my purpose I wanted something more discreet. I can take the 1DX Mkii anywhere and no one bats an eye. However you will need permits and planning with the FS7. But they are both great cameras. The next camera on my radar is the Terra 6k and 5k, but I will need to see more footage. And honestly, I would prefer to buy it locally from one of the well established retailers... with are reasonable return policy, just in case it doesn't live up to expectations. The 1DX Mkii is rugged, and that combined with great image quality earn it a long-term place in my kit. Not sure what I will do with the Sony now? It's not an ideal B-cam to the Canon.
-
Not sure exactly why the Sony's image broke down after applying the vignette. It was certainly unexpected. But one thing is certain, when applying grades or effects you are dealing with a much less robust file from the Sony camera. Mind you I did mess around with some footage from the Kinefinity, and that held up well to everything I threw at it. Even presets that I would never usually dream of using. But of the two in this comparison, I'm quite pleased with the Canon. Now if they could resolve the poor HD quality it would add serious value. I think the Sony is best used by getting the image as close to the finished product as possible in camera, and keeping external grading to a minimum. It is capable of some sharp images, but manual focus pulling with more forgiving depth of field is your best option for moving subjects. Normally I use manual cine lenses on the A7Rii. However, with the Canon I have been favoring AF lenses, as it seems good enough at holding focus so that this has become a viable option.

Well in that case you may have come about as close as possible. But why the different resolutions?

Here is a quick edit from the sample footage Bleach Bypass and Vignette -.1 on both. All footage is being pushed with the same effects to the same degree. Canon1DXMkiiVsA7Rii.mp4 Both the Sony and Canon were set to the color temperature of the Aputure Light Storm LS 1c. Everything was kept even. No special consideration given to either camera. The idea was to see what they could do all things being equal.

Well the question has been burning so I figured I would run some quick test to highlight the differences between these two heavy weights when it comes to video. The two frames below are taken from 4k video captured under that same conditions, using the same lens, ISO, White Balance, Frame rate. Everything is the same on both cameras. Lighting set to 3700k in both cases with some practical lighting filling in. Nothing has been color graded/corrected. Images are direct frame grabs. About the videos: the Canon is capable of very cinematic footage at 24 fps. The Sony tends to feel more like video, but has very good quality for a camera of such a small size. Color science is very different between the two. The Canon's batteries last a long time. I will not speak of focus as the Sony will be a a disadvantage in this particular test as it is running as Canon lens. While native glass will fare better, the Canon has a decisive edge in the focus pulling department. In short, great results can be had from either camera, however the Canon will make getting those result feel less like work.

This test is meaningless. The setting on all three cameras are completely different. Plus they chose to shoot 4k with the Sony and 1080p with the Canons. See the post here. From the original post.

Canon 1D X Mark II high ISO and colour performance worse than predecessor
DBounce replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Tested the 1DX Mkii on the Letus Helix, so far all is good. Still sorting through the manual. Took some test shots over the weekend verse my Sony A7ii and A7Rii. The Canon is way cleaner, requiring far less gain to expose in low light conditions that either of the Sonys. Video look pretty good to my eyes, even in dark (not just low-light) conditions, whereas the Sonys produced unusable footage under the same condition. We did have some rain over the weekend, and I had no fear, safe in the knowledge that this body is fully weather-sealed. -
I do indeed own it, but have not yet tested this aspect of it. But now that it is on the radar I believe I will need to.
-
After reading the article in noticed his comments on rolling shutter RS has not really been a big concern for me in the past, but still nice to hear it is a non-issue with the 1DX Mkii.
-
Without a baseline I'm not certain what can really be discovered here. If it's color science I think it's a wash either way... and there is no way to establish which is more true to life. But on the other hand if we are talking about overall image quality, then I believe the superior resolving power of the Kinefinity is quite evident in this video. For that reason I believe the kinefinity gets the win here. That said, many questions still remain about this company and support in the USA. But perhaps MOST IMPORTANTLY... NONE OF THESE IMAGES ARE FROM THE KINEFINITY TERRA... and a lot can change when the sensor is moved into a much smaller body. Sooooo... this shows nothing of values, assuming you are considering the new cameras fromantic Kinefinity.

Great, then hopefully we can see some reviews and footage soon.

He's right, if you need to work with canon lenses go with the A7Rii. All my canon lenses work quite nicely with both the A7Rii and A7ii. All other sony camera are not supported.

I defy you to lock focus with as much ease as you can with the 1DX Mkii with any of those other cameras. You guys are bustin b@lls, does the Ursa Mini come close to the ISO performance of this camera? Is kinefinity weather sealed? As an A7R, A7Rii, A7Mkii owner, I can confirm the A7 series does not have the same level of reliability... it's a prosumer/consumer product. My 1DX Mkii comes today... if I put it through its paces and it sucks, I'll sell it, but if we're comparing this without using it, then I'll judge it by the footage I've seen. And so far the 4k has looked quite good. I know it will not need to be babied. No need to worry about a little rain... or a monsoon. I know when I fly it I'll still get the shot... in focus! No overheating! Massive lens selection. Built like a tank. Not a permit camera like many. It's a fantastic all rounder. A7Rii You know the A7RII is a great stills camera, but I can tell you this... set it in burst mode and you will fill the buffer in a few seconds.... then you will wait... and wait... and wait some more... and yet some more... while it writes to the card. Missed quite a few shots that way. And what good is superior ISO performance or better DR, when you've missed the shot? Also, the jury is still out on this ISO thing. After reviewing some images taken by 1DC Mkii owners, I'm not so sure the A7Rii is better. At least not after eyeballing a few stills i took a 10k ISO with my A7Rii. They did not appear a clean as the Canon. And the noise was not as organic either. Detail also got lost. As time goes on we will learn more, but it is unwise to jump to conclusions here. -
Canon 1D X Mark II high ISO and colour performance worse than predecessor

It's a love hate relationship, and I would not bet against you on this one Jimmy. -
I compared JPG images. Once it comes in I will compare it with the A7Rii at different ISO, using the same lenses and settings. I love my A7Rii for stills, but really expected better performance when pushed. Not that it's bad... 10k ISO is pretty high. I'm now debating weather it will make sense to keep the A7Rii once the Canon arrives. These test will help answer that question. What has your experience been with skin tones on the 1DX Mkii? I've heard reports that Canon have changed their color science, and skin tones are now more yellow. Do you have stills you can post?

Man lot of smack being talked here. Personally I'm not sure what all the complaining is about. The stills I have seen look great, and when the ISO is pushed they look cleaner than what my A7Rii put out. And the video looks great. So do you really care what the specks say if it produces great images? Me... I judge by the footage.
