I don't think using the tablet as a monitor would prevent using the screen on the back of the camera. Also, if using an external monitor in place of a wireless tablet I can see no reason why this would disable the touch screen. In any case my camera will be here tomorrow, so I'll be happy to test out different scenarios. On an interesting note: After comparing some stills that I found online from the 1DX Mkii taken at ISO 12800, to stills taken with my A7Rii @ 10k ISO, I have to say I found the stills from the Canon to be much clearer. I honestly did not expect this. But in all truth I seldom push the Sony to such high ISO... I was however disappointed. I plan to recheck the images tonight and I will be doing testing to compare the two models.

We also have the Osmo. It's GoPro type quality footage... But not as wide. Low light is terrible. And that would be my main concern with the X5/X5r. There really isn't much in the way of footage outside of drone use for these cameras. That makes it a pretty tough pill to swallow for a $3k+ M43 camera, that will be $6k once rigged, though I can certainly understand the appeal of such a light and portable setup. We are planning a trip for Memorial Day and wondering what gear should go, and what should stay. Size and weight constraints play a major role in this thought process. I would love to bring the Helix, but how to carry all this stuff on a plane. I know my camera will not be leaving my line of sight. I don't want to be posting horror stories of losing our gear.

Yes, they are using the remote app and controlling and viewing from a tablet. Notice the camera has the wireless module attached (the small grey adapter on the side of the camera).

If using Canon lenses, the A7RII is the best choice as it works well with the Metabones adapter. But honestly, if only for video I would seriously consider the FS5, if you like the Sony look.

Don't know, but apparently the 1DC did not sell as much as Canon had hoped... Maybe because it was basically the same camera as the 1DX MkI but with a few more video features and a few less still camera feature and a huge price markup? In any case, the 1DX Mkii is the best of both worlds. And I for one do like both still and video features in my cameras, and the 1DX Mkii, while not perfect, does seem to check quite a few important boxes.
-
I can't see why it would be, Canon already stated that the 1DX MkII is a replacement for the 1DC. So there will be no 1DC MkII.

To be fare is that not exactly what so many are doing in this thread... Blaming the tool (1DX Mkii) for some reason or another. As far as I can tell it should be killer. Can't wait to get my hot little hands on mine.

Well, it says that it's designed to adapt PL glass to Canon EF, so I'm guessing that's what it does.

Here, problem solved

I'd be the first to admit that canon should have included a Log profile on this camera. Especially at a street price of $6k and $6300 list. Not sure where you saw it for $4 grand... but I'm willing to bet that was not a MkII. In any case I'm certain if this is not good enough to get the job done, we'll don't make plans to quit that day job.

So what is the point? Are you staying that this means the 1DX Mkii did not capture the footage? None of this diminishes what the camera can do. The promo video for the Blackmagic Ursa Mini is just as flashy... Perhaps more so. From what I can see with a weather-sealed body and tough build, plus 4k @60fps and great low ISO this camera should be a great tool on any production. Granted, your production might be less elaborate, but that's not the fault of the camera. Also, all the scenes were captured with Canon photo lenses. It certainly performs better that most other hybrid cameras I have seen. And is far more versatile than the current crop of cinema cameras.

Good tip. I think there is definitely a place for this camera many an indie filmmakers kit. With the USA release slated for tomorrow this is just the beginning of the footage that will be out there. I encourage all of you to post new footage to this thread as it comes out. That way we will have a centralized location where we can locate the latest example from this intriguing new camera.

Some wonder, like I did, why Canon seem to innovate so slowly. As it turns out this was to reward customers with the knowledge that when purchasing a new Canon camera, they could rest assured that their product would remain current for years to come. Sony on the other hand replaces their models once or twice per year. Canon started this practice many years ago, and even went as far as to promise not to change a model for 10 years. Here is a very informative video about the history of Canon. It will help you understand their philosophy.

Just add C-Log to the 1DX Mkii and call it a day. As for a smaller body, not gonna happen. They need room for heat-pipes, and that cannot fit in the smaller body. And given what you need it for, I take it you'll want that weather sealed also. Btw, who else is packaging these specs into a weather sealed body? Sony A7 series, FS5/7 are not weather sealed.

Actually, Canon did state that the 1DX Mkii is a replacement for both the 1DX and the 1DC... Look at the video below... Goto 8:29 and listen as the Canon Product Manager is directly asked if the 1DX Mkii is a replacement for the 1DC. Also earlier in the video he speaks about how Canon envisions this camera being a B-Cam to the Canon 300 Mkii. FYI: there are several other videos and stories out there where Canon have repeatedly stated the the 1DX Mkii is a replacement for both the 1DX and 1DC... with that said, don't hold your breath for a new 1DC being announced.

If the x5 camera I would opt for the Osmo.

Agreed, and I think there is much Canon hate here. But I think that stems from the fact that these haters actually like Canon, but feel like Canon has not embraced the indie film movement as much as they would like. As time goes by and more folks get their cameras and footage will make it's way onto the web. I believe this camera will prove itself to be a great option.

I can certainly understand the desire for C-Log, and it's a poor decision for Canon to leave it off their flagship model. No doubt that decision is going to cost them more than a few sales. Especially when one considers that Nikon includes log profiles on even entry level models. But that said I'm liking the motion cadence much more than my Sony A7Rii. To me this camera does not have that classic "film look"... rather it looks more like the modern take on what cinematic is evolving to be. I think the images out of it look great, and are very workable. This camera could be a serious tool for video production. The low light also looks good. It's clearly much more forgiving that a traditional cine camera would be under less than ideal lighting conditions. Another point is this thing is rugged... built like a tank, so no worries about needing to baby it. The camera is weather sealed also. For a gorilla style shooter, this camera could be ideal. IMO, this camera is looking like it might fit the bill as an all around tool. Great at video and stills. Loving the 14-16 fps stills mode. Auto-focus is epic in both stills and video. You can fly this bad boy and not worry about pulling focus. Yes, I would have taken a flip-out screen, two CFast slots... but most of all C-Log (Why no stinking C-Log Canon?) and 10 bit would have been very 2016 (well in this price range anyway). But in any case, I know of no other camera this versatile, while being able to shoot 4k 60p. The fact is most cinema cameras are also "permit cameras". The 1DX Mkii is much more discreet than say an Ursa Mini. I'm in for one. I've always loved the Canon look, and this 1DX Mkii seems like a workhorse and a serious pro level piece of kit. Mine should be in next week, I'll be happy to post a few frame grabs to let you know how it works out.

Not sure why you show this video. I see the image falling apart plenty. Lots of artifacting. Also at a maximum ISO of 800, well, let's be honest, that not exactly pushing the envelope now is it? Granted, Youtube compression does not exactly help. But I think the Canon has this soundly beat, and no doubt at much higher ISO's. The 1DX Mkii is said to be clean up-to 12800... Can the GH4 do this? And let's not even start to get into the focus system on the 1DX Mkii. After all, would it even make sense to go there? I'll give you this much, the 1080p on the 1DX Mkii needs to be cleaner. Really, no excuse for it not to be. I'm sure this is fixable in firmware. But everything else is golden.

Here is some new footage that I found from the upcoming Canon 1DX Mkii. This camera is shaping up to be very interesting. Next week is going to be fun... That's when the new Canon 1DX Mkii will start shipping. Curious to hear everyone's feedback.
-
Yes, but I could not save the corrections. In any case, weather canon call it c-log or something else, the 1DX, should come with some sort of Log profile.
-
We'll if a new 1DX is coming, then canon have lied in virtually every interview and video they've made about the 1DX. Because time and time again they have stated that the 1DX mkii is a replacement for it.

FYI: I did shoot an email off to Canon, shortly after reading this... And I got a reply. I bolded the part that I think we really need to hammer Canon on: Here is the CanonUSA page with all of the means to contact CanonUSA. I suggest we also hammer them on social media. It seems that is a medium that gets a lot of response these days. I firmly believe that if we the consumer let Canon know that it is not OK to leave out such a basic feature on their top of the line model, that they will listen. So lets get this one done. Too bad this didn't work with Samsumg... RIP NX1.
