Just got the Kolari VND filter and can confirm that it fits the official Canon drop-in adapter perfectly with no issues I can see so far.

Intended to follow your lead and get the X4 VND as well but they're never in stock, so I went with the Kolari VND filter instead which has been getting some great reviews too, and Kolari states it is compatible with the Canon drop-in adapter. It's also around $100 USD cheaper than the X4 if I'm not mistaken.

Are there any other ML enabled Canon cams that also do DPAF besides the 70D?
-
Would love to hear about the wrong moments although it doesn't seem to have affected the final piece much - great job!

I captured a post film screening interview last night between the director and his mom who is one of the first Black filmmakers in Canada... nothing prepared ahead of time just a capture of the moment for his family archives. I seriously considered pulling out the 5D MKIII to pair with my R5C but ended up going with the R5C and 1DC bcuz the second shooter wasn't familiar with ML. The R5C's footage was obviously great but the DPAF struggled at times to keep focus on the director's mom - and while it was happening, all I could think was maybe I should've just stuck with my trusty 5D MKIII/1DC combo. All that to say my relationship with the R5C has been kind meh so far (altho the image and cinema options in essentially a 1DC sized body once u add the grip are great!) - but the biggest takeaway I've had so far is that now more than ever, I know I will never sell my 5D MKIII.

Apparently even if you were to find the NEXTO NPS-10 model used or on ebay, etc, the battery can only be replaced by the manufacturer, which is no longer in business. However the older NEXTO models have batteries you can find on ebay and replace yourself. So basically you'll want to look for the older NEXTO models which don't have CFexpress slots but can accept a card reader via its USB 3.0 port (not sure they all do though!). Posting for anyone googling this stuff like I was...

Finally had the time to research this a bit more and you are right. My older Nexto ND2901 was able to backup footage via my Sandisk CF Express Type B reader. The caveat is it doesn't seem to be able to do it while running on batteries - it must be plugged in, so not as portable as I'd like it to be but a lifesaver no less. Either way these Nexto units have proven their worth - even as the company itself has apparently gone out of business.

I just bought an R5C and considering the battery life issues I guess that will basically be a no... although come to think of it these adapter/filters are strictly mechanical things no? So there wouldn't be anything firmware related that would affect them... I hope!
-
Any idea whether this is aimed specifically at Vitrox? Will companies like Meike and Kolari be impacted too? They both make better and cheaper EF-RF VND filter/adapters but I don't have the $$ to pick one up just yet.
-
Well I can say for example that for someone like me who has an R5-C and is actively looking to pick up one of those RF-EF adaptors that come with the drop-in ND filter, that the Meike and Kolari offerings are just better. And that's using every metric that matters, including price. So from that perspective I can see why Canon would not want this type of smoke from third party companies.

If they can just solve their AF issues bcuz I love the form factor of their cams. This video is by no means a proper test but it is a reminder of that - but really I just love this guy's on-camera demeanor... always makes me crack up, lol...
-
Battery grip pretty much solves it but if I wanted to be running around with 1DX weight I would've bought one.
-
Totally agree, which is why I just stated what the hack was and linked to the vid for credit. I really hope this is addressed in a firmware update bcuz it seems like such a simple fix.
-
A useful battery hack for the R5C. Basically if you hit the Media button and keep it in that mode while you aren't shooting, you can almost triple the battery's life:

Finally got around to rigging the R5C for run n gun stuff and figuring out the best strategies for various shooting scenarios (from super stripped down to rigged up for talking head shoots). I'm used to just grabbing my 5D MKIII with ML RAW and a couple batteries for the most basic footage captures (video + photo) - and while you can do that with the R5C, the battery life and need to swap out every 45 minutes or so, even if you haven't captured much, definitely crosses into the realm of annoying af. And if you're thinking of putting the battery grip on the R5C with something like a 50mm f/1.2L, well expect that fairly light R5C body to hit 1DC/1DX class in terms of the heft - and that's not even with something like the Smallrig cage on it. All that to say that while I have no regrets (the specs you get in this small form factor continues to amaze me!), I really hope Canon addresses the battery issues with a firmware update that at least gives users more robust and diverse power saving options. Especially when you flip over to the photo side and realize you probably do have another 10 minutes left in the battery tank for video. Either way it still leaves me thinking that a used XT3 with a pancake lens would be the perfect pocket-sized cam to travel with and always have on hand - that is until these smartphones finally take their rightful seat on the throne, lol...

Yeah that seems like the main thing you gotta workaround... any idea what the best ports are for these M1s?
-
Cool, thanks for this! What are you using as an audio interface?

Looking to say goodbye to my Hackintosh and hello to a Mac Mini M1 with 16GB RAM + 1TB internal storage. These things go for about $800US in my neck of the woods. I'd mostly be editing the R5C's 4K 422 10bit XF-AVC footage along with the 5D MKIII's 1080 ML RAW and maybe some 8K LT every so often. Basic talking head doc stuff with light to medium grading, etc. Anyone with Mac Mini M1 experience that can tell me whether it can handle footage/projects like that? And if not, does it make sense to go for the base model of the new Mac Studio? (can't afford anything higher) Or is there another Mac M1 model in that $800-$1600US price range I should considering? Thanks in advance!

I went with an R5C
-
It definitely does (and I don't know why either!) which is why I won't be budging on my listed price, bcuz while putting it up for sale was just a practical decision for me - I have absolutely no problems keeping it.
-
Just put mine up for sale today 😞

Apparently this seller does a D tap dummy battery that allows for 8K 60p but it's a special order: https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Coiled-Canon-R5C-Alvins-Cables/dp/B09XDNQLRH

Anyone know whether this might work on mirrorless camera like the R5C? https://www.amazon.ca/Ansbell-Magnetic-Adapter-Transfer-Compatible/dp/B0831KYRD2
