Finally got around to rigging the R5C for run n gun stuff and figuring out the best strategies for various shooting scenarios (from super stripped down to rigged up for talking head shoots). I'm used to just grabbing my 5D MKIII with ML RAW and a couple batteries for the most basic footage captures (video + photo) - and while you can do that with the R5C, the battery life and need to swap out every 45 minutes or so, even if you haven't captured much, definitely crosses into the realm of annoying af. And if you're thinking of putting the battery grip on the R5C with something like a 50mm f/1.2L, well expect that fairly light R5C body to hit 1DC/1DX class in terms of the heft - and that's not even with something like the Smallrig cage on it. All that to say that while I have no regrets (the specs you get in this small form factor continues to amaze me!), I really hope Canon addresses the battery issues with a firmware update that at least gives users more robust and diverse power saving options. Especially when you flip over to the photo side and realize you probably do have another 10 minutes left in the battery tank for video. Either way it still leaves me thinking that a used XT3 with a pancake lens would be the perfect pocket-sized cam to travel with and always have on hand - that is until these smartphones finally take their rightful seat on the throne, lol...

Looking to say goodbye to my Hackintosh and hello to a Mac Mini M1 with 16GB RAM + 1TB internal storage. These things go for about $800US in my neck of the woods. I'd mostly be editing the R5C's 4K 422 10bit XF-AVC footage along with the 5D MKIII's 1080 ML RAW and maybe some 8K LT every so often. Basic talking head doc stuff with light to medium grading, etc. Anyone with Mac Mini M1 experience that can tell me whether it can handle footage/projects like that? And if not, does it make sense to go for the base model of the new Mac Studio? (can't afford anything higher) Or is there another Mac M1 model in that $800-$1600US price range I should considering? Thanks in advance!

It definitely does (and I don't know why either!) which is why I won't be budging on my listed price, bcuz while putting it up for sale was just a practical decision for me - I have absolutely no problems keeping it.

Sorry I meant to say I got the used R5C for $500 CAN more than what a used R5 goes for over here - so it felt well worth the extra money.

Well I bit the bullet and picked up a used R5C. It was about $500 US cheaper than what a used R5 goes for in these parts and came with a Anker powerbank + a 512GB Sandisk Pro cfexpress card I purchased for an extra $350. Coming from using C300/100s I will say that I really appreciate having that classic Cine menu in such a relatively small body. I also feel like for the first time pretty much future-proofed when it comes to my A cam - and I see myself growing and learning with the R5C for a long long time - but also see myself potentially getting an R5 much later down the line as a B-cam. I am not a reviewer/tester at all so I won't be doing any of that stuff - but here are some early thoughts after screwing around with it for a weekend: (i) The battery life is definitely a pain in the ass and while not a deal breaker for me - I can see why it would be for many. I currently have three LPE6NH batteries but compared to my run n gun days with my 5D MKIII w/ ML RAW or even my 1DC - I don't have the same confidence going into the field with just the cam and 4 or 5 batteries. Sure I have the Anker battery but that's super clunky and all the external battery options require some degree of rigging. I agree with others who think Canon should create a special battery grip that allows something like an LPE17 battery to power the R5C. I'll also say that youtuber CAMMACKEY has built my fav rig solution so far! (ii) The R5C definitely feels alot lighter than my 5D MKIII but the fan makes it essentially the same size/footprint. I say this only bcuz part of me was really hoping it could be more of a stealth camera (like the XT3/4) that I could bring on trips without drawing unwanted attention (particularly thieves, beach robbers etc) but that is def not the case (which makes something like the XT3/4 an option I'll still consider once it gets to the $700-$900CAN range!) (iii) On the topic of stealth I'd love it if Canon released an RF version of it's 40mm pancake lens bcuz that feels like a great combo for those looking for a smaller run n gun footprint (sure I could pop on the adapter but with the EF 40mm pancake it ends up being about the same size as the RF 35mm so I'd prefer a true RF pancake. (iv) DPAF/face tracking is class leading of course altho performance with Canon lenses seems to vary. I also noticed that the AF speed adjustment option isn't available for my 50mm f1.2 nor my 28mm f2.8 (IS) altho AF Response is available. So far the DPAF/face tracking works great with the 28mm but was more fiddly with the 50mm (although I acknowledge that I'm still researching optimal settings, etc) (iv) Looking at the photo side and the feel of the images coming out of the R5C, I gotta say I prefer the IQ of my 5D MKIII. This is totally subjective, and I acknowledge it might just be a settings thing. It's also important to flag that the new CR3 files won't open in the default Preview application on older Mac OSX's. I use High Sierra with no plans of upgrading so I'll need to find a proper photo app. (v) The touch screen is great but I still feel like I'll want a Ninja V. I think that's it for now and thanks again to everyone on this forum for their thoughts on this cam and every other thing you've discussed over the years. I was really on the fence with the R5C vs the R5 but so far I feel like I made the right choice for me - although it really was the price that sealed the deal.

Totally agree! Has Canon ever done something like that between cameras that don't share the same type of battery? It seems more likely that a third party would be the one to do it - but I doubt there's a big enough R5C owner base to even warrant it although in theory it would work for the R5 owners too. On another note - any idea roughly how much time you get on the R5C with an LPE6 battery? I'm thinking maybe 20 minutes but would be good to hear from an actual owner. And thanks for your initial response!

Anyone on here with R5C experience that can tell me how the battery life compares to say a 5D MKIII? Also, if you had the option of buying a used R5C for $375US more than a used R5, would you go with the R5C? I'm definitely going to buy one or the other - my main concern with the R5C is the battery life. I mostly shoot talking head doc stuff and will mostly be using 4K 422 10-bit XFAC. When I'm in the field I'm used to run-n-gunning with a few extra batteries for my 5D MKIII with ML RAW and maybe using 3 out 4 of those batteries. But the battery life of the R5C seems to be around the threshold of unacceptable. Anyways, if there are any R5C users willing to chime in I'd sincerely appreciate it, thx!

Interesting news but feels like something you'd use very sparingly or risk shortening the life of your R5. So for someone like me that's been leaning to the R5c (it just seems like the ultimate package for a Canon- leaning run n gun shooter) - this update doesn't change the fact that if I went with an R5, I'd still have to at least buy a Ninja V for scopes and safer recording options. And actually now I'd prob want to invest in CfExpress cards whereas before I wasn't even thinking about that... so in a way it increases the overall cost. Might just be worth it to save up for the R5C allthough if Canon offered an R5 firmware update that at least gave it Waveform or False Color - now THAT would be something indeed!

My current cams use CF Cards and I've used Nexto's ND2901 portable backup unit for years with no issues. Nexto did have a newer version that accepted CFexpress cards (NPS-10) but I just noticed it's been discontinued. Any CFexpress users with other remote backup suggestions? Or is that no longer a concern for reasons I'm completely oblivious to? Thanks in advance!

I love the look of these Fuji mirrorless cams - just waiting for them to get their video AF sh*t together. If they had I would've bought a couple of XT4s and called it a day, years ago. Any word on whether it's looking better with the XH2S?

Apologies if this has been answered before, but does the image stabilization of Canon EF lenses with IS, work properly with the R5 when mounted with an EF-RF adapter and IBIS is turned off?

Not at all, it's price point really... used C300 MKII's are going for $4-5K (Canadian) around my parts vs a used C70, which goes for $8-9K, and now 1DX MKII's are hitting $2-3K levels. I actually started looking at the R5, now that the no battery + Ninja V is a proven option. You can get one + a Ninja V and eos adapter w/ ND for about 5K too. So I feel like if I did that, I'd be content for a long long time.

It was never an either/or... but with theory in mind, what might offer better latitiude in post (for grading, punching in, VFX, etc) when shooting at 60p? The 10 bit color depth of the C300 MKII or the 4K resolution of the 1DX MKII? Or do other factors like bit rate need to be considered as well?

I'm still kind of on the fence between the C300 MKII and the 1DX MKII, which is why I was inquiring on people's real world experience working with the C300 MKII's 2K 60p @ 422 10 bit vs the 1DX MKII's 4K 60p @ 422 8 bit, in post. I'll admit I'm not tech savvy in my understanding of which combo of resolution/color depth might trump the other. Aside from that, my instincts are telling me that any camera purchase I make moving forward - aside from having decent DPAF - should at least have 422 10 bit. Over here in Canada I'm seeing 1DX MKII's going for close to 2K and C300 MKIIs hitting sub $5K... and if I was going for the C300 MKII, it'd be with a friend, so I'd essentially be paying about the same price as a used 1DX MKII. Also, does the C300 MKII do 4K 60p RAW externally?
