  1. You mean the 10+ minute chase down the runway? Saw a funny story about that, the runway would have to be well over 20 miles long for that to happen. http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-23005848 Then again people aren't regularly jumping between moving vehicles, getting showered with bullets and surrounded by explosions without getting seriously injured, so there's a lot of suspension of disbelief if you're watching any action movie. It is what it is - 2 hours of mindless entertainment with some wow stunts. I watch action movies (stunts and action sequences) the same way I watch The Walking Dead (what new way are they gonna make a zombie splatter?).
  2. Interesting seeing the results from the LX100. Rumors are flying that Sony has a LX100 competitor coming this week as a RX100 refresh. Panasonic really nailed that one as its without peers. Wish it had a mic jack.
  3. I was looking at me h 4k LG myself and then I came across this: http://www.amazon.com/Seiki-SM40UNP-40-0-Inch-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B00RVGXZ08 Looks like a promising option in the budget 4k realm.
  4. Everyone's needs are different, 1080p monitor, histogram, timecode and audio does it for me. Pre-ordered. Thanks BM!
  5. The BM is worth the extra $100 just for the extra pixels and SD (cheap media) recording over the Ninja 2. For $500 I can live any shortcomings as I have a slew of fast SD cards.
  6. They're not listed on the NAB site list of exhibitors.
  7. This will be a great ENG cam. Filmmakers may hate it, but they'll sell a ton of them. Hopefully a GH5 is in the pipeline with a better YAGH.
  8. I'm still on CS5, but trying to divorce myself from Adobe and I've been on the fence about FCPX while learning Resolve 11. Pretty much all of my shooting/editing is ENG style. The mulitcam and audio improvements may make it possible for me to dump Adobe for good. Sound is the weak spot for me in 11. I'm not a digital artist so Capture One is replacing LR and PS. The creative cloud can suck it. Great job Blackmagic. Now build a 4k pocket and take more of my money. EDIT: just saw this on the R12 press release: The update to DaVinci Resolve 12 will be available in July for download from the Blackmagic Design website free of charge for all current DaVinci Resolve customers.

    NX1 earns Gold

Its been DXO'd too. http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Samsung/NX1 Impressive performance.
  10. The presser is on point, it goes into specifics to demonstrate that Kessler doesn't support such actions - even if they're just allegations they can't support him in any way. It doesn't say he did it. From a business perspective it's the proper course of action, terminate Bloom and wait for the situation to be settled - which is pretty standard with endorsement contracts. Its damage control for Kessler with an issue that's getting a lot of public attention in the U.S. lately - as it should. Kudos to Kessler for taking a stand. I hope the two women will press charges and let it play out in court.
  11. This is complete BS. The 16-50s is only ok on the edges and corners with aps-c, resolution drops by quite a bit. On FF it would be an absolute mess. Many of the cheaper Samsung zooms are much worse. Samsung may build a FF camera, but it would require new lenses.
  12. The 16/2.4 is a good light/small/wide prime and its very affordable, but as you say it lacks the controls of the larger lens. It does have the ifunction button though. Samsung claims in a Dpreview interview to have a staff of 100 developing lenses (don't know how that compares to others though) and more lenses are a top priority - so more are coming. Would be nice to see a Fuji-style roadmap at some point.
  13. 3-axis gimbals for smaller cameras like the Nebula 4k options to compete with the GH4 and NX1 Firmware updates for the GH4 and NX1 4k Ninja Star or something similar 4k Blackmagic Pocket h265 support in FCPX and Permiere More 4k monitors that will work with my little trashcan Mac Pro - though the new 40" Seiki looks good Basically mucho 4k since I'm jumping on the 4k bandwagon
  14. I need to track down a copy of windows, I'd like to try this out. As always JCS, thanks for sharing your creations with the community.
  15. I would suggest something like the Sony RX10 or Panasonic FZ1000 if you don't want to go with a traditional video camera. Both use the same sensor, have mic inputs, the Sony has the faster lens, the Panny shoots 4k and had a fully articulating screen. If you're dipping your toes into doc work, these are great options. Bob Krist is a National Geographic photographer and he shoots a lot of his stuff with the RX10. Here's a couple good reads from him. Check out his Vimeo page, stunning work, lots of it shot on the RX10. http://www.oldmaninmotion.com/four-great-still-shooting-feats-my-sub-1k-mirrorless-can-do-that-my-3k-dslr-cant/ http://www.oldmaninmotion.com/mirrorless-mirrorless-on-the-wall-2/#more-538
  16. The 16-50 is at the top of its class, faster than the competition and its very sharp. Unless you're going all legacy, this is a must own NX lens IMO. From Rogers tests at lensrentals: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2014/12/one-single-samsung-nx-1-test 24-70's on FF, including the EF 24-70L II http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2013/01/a-24-70mm-system-comparison Not apples to apples, but the 16-50s is among the best standard zooms available. Its a great all around lens on the NX1.
  17. Halo products aimed at high end consumers don't drive profits because the sales numbers aren't there. Canon's bread and butter is lenses and APS-c bodies. Its no surprise they're not chasing 4k (and mirrorless) as the companies offering it (Panasonic, Sony and Samsung) can barely make a profit (or are losing significant amounts of money) selling cameras, its still very early for widely available/cheap 4k hardware and its not a critical market space - its a small piece of the pie. We'll have to agree to disagree because the market share numbers doesn't jive with your assessment of no 4k being an epic failure. Until 4k is adopted by broadcasters and other mainstream means of distribution and viewing, its a small niche market as general consumers are not buying 4k TV's in large numbers - and they will not until they can flip on their TV's and get lots of 4k content. That's years away at best. User generated content is not enough to drive the market as the vast majority have something that 's good enough. With the 50mp bodies Canon has done something out of step for them - create something that caters to a small niche segment that wants a higher MP body and doesn't care about video. This will be the future going forward as the market continues to shrink since millions of DSLR buyers that fueled the crazy sales numbers over the last 5 or 6 years have a "real" camera and will not be upgrading. I think Canon will fill another small niche soon - a 4k DSLR - with a more video focused 5d next.
  18. But you're talking about a small segment of the market, and Canon isn't looking to capture niches with mass-consumer level cameras. 4k for the masses will not happen until there's significant amounts of content - most notably broadcasting - and that's still years away. Its always going to be a gear head niche until content is cheap and easy to access. You also have to look at the fact that many have moved to flat screens in the last 7 or 8 years, until those TV's start crapping out there will be no reason to upgrade since there's still almost no 4k content. 1080p TV's are also ridiculously cheap - so those looking for new sets can now get 65" or TV's for under $1000, making 4k a tough sell to most of the TV buying population. Panasonic and Sony combined make up a fraction of Canon's market share - they have to push the envelope and be different to be relevant. Trying to emulate what Canon does simply isn't going to work - ask any Sony A-mount owner. People have been banging the "Canon needs to innovate or die" drum for years and they still own the market. Its not like they're going to let the cat out of the bag for DPreview anyway, what else is he going to say - "sure we have tons of 4K cameras coming." They have to keep a lid on what they're developing. We'll see what surfaces at NAB.
  19. I'm sure Canon is well aware that 4k on the consumer level isn't going to move the needle very much as very few people actually own 4k tv's. Its still a small market. The best selling UHD tv on Amazon US is #49 right now and there are only 2 in the top 70. Even with that, they undoubtedly have stuff in the pipeline. That being said, I think they'll roll out 4k broadcast cameras at NAB and I think the 5d4 - announced sometime after the 50MP cameras actually ship - will be a 4k camera. It will cannibalize very little from the C100/300's because that user base values the extras that the cinema line brings to the table - proper audio, ND's, better codec and so on. ENG/Doc/Reality/TV crews will still choose the Cinema line. My sister is a producer for a large cable network and many of the series' she works with shoot C100/300's as their main cameras. Same for the countless pilots she screens for the network. DSLR's are secondary cameras in that realm.
  20. No problem, I have never used the preview button either, it sits right under my ring finger when holding the NX1, its really convenient for a useful function. I agree, you should be able to use SAF while recording. I haven't found a back-button AF function like I have with the 5d3 outside of the touchscreen. Still working my way through the manual and learning the functions of the NX1.
  21. That's what it appears to be from the video sample, but Samsung's wording is still confusing. Hopefully we get a review soon. From the US site's specs: *When recording 4K or UHD video, the angle of view becomes narrower. (Effective angle of view : approx. 4K 1.68 times, UHD 1.77 times the focal length)
  22. I misunderstood what the OP was asking, I didn't realize it was while recording, not just in video mode. Then no I can't change while recording. Its locked in when you hit record. Slightly OT, I assigned video standby mode to the preview button on the front to make it easier to jump into video mode when shooting from the EVF. Its now easier to move between stills and video for me.
  23. That's still a great price when compared to the $2000 alternatives. I'm *this* close to ordering one for my LX100. These guys have been making gimbals longer than the Nebula, hopefully the units are better sorted.
