  1. Agreed..... I am in the market for a new camera in 2016.... i'm damned if I will buy anything with 8 bit internal and i'm tired of bolting on external recorders. At a time where you can pick up a 2nd hand, rigged up Scarlet MX for $6k, or a BMCC 4k cam for much less... The idea of spending $7k to get an 8 bit video is not sitting well.

  3. I would go FS700. Slow motion is good, you have NDs etc, low light is decent, it is upgradable using something like an Odyssey 7q... And, perhaps most importantly for animal work, it has a buffer mode that means you can click record and it will record the previous 6-12 seconds .... Takes out alot of the unpredictable side of filming animals
  4. Maybe mention your budget, what size sensor you normally shoot with etc etc.. Do you need ultra low light? Shallow/deep DOF?
  5. Interesting camera.... If the Raven has an interchangeable lens mount, I'd stick with that... Gotta laugh at the "obsolescence obsolete" tag red stand by. In the time the c300 got a mk II... Scarlet has gone mx > dragon > W (with Raven in the mix too).

    From what I have read, the 15:1 is quite usable... I;m in no way technical, but read that the weapon has a few tricks up it's sleeve to get a better image than 15:1 in Epic.... zero idea of how much truth there is to that though. I've used mx quite a bit and heavier compression is certainly noticeable

    I like to see the camera in question working at full potential, in these promo vids. As long as there is not extremely excessive and expensive post trickery involved, i think it is fair.

  10. 4K CineForm RAW is generally in the range of 30MB/sec to 50 MB/sec. So 8K would be 120MB/sec to 200MB/sec At the lower ended, that seems fairly manageable for a 5 second burst.
  11. For me, motion stills, even as a frame burst, wont ever be a consideration until someone uses something like Cineform Raw or REDcode... I wonder what filesize 8K lossless cineform raw would be with a burst of, say, 5 seconds?

How I think this would work, in still mode.... have x amount of seconds of 8K video (compressed raw) constantly rolling into the buffer, but allow the photographer to use the shutter to pick the moment with the shutter, storing the previous X seconds of video and the X seconds of video after the shutter press. This would give the photographer that passion to capture the moment, would create the excitement of the shutter that models feed off, but also give a short "video frame burst" to run through in post that would almost certainly contain the perfect moment (probably within a millisecond before or after the shutter click). It could also store a raw still image of the exact moment the shutter is pressed too. That's a feature I would love.

    Harsh crowd... Note to RED, next time, give it to someone who only knows how to shoot outdoors, without lighting... that seems to get the juices running. Are people actually upset that they are showcasing how the footage will look in a professional environment? This is far more interesting than the recent BM4.6K footage that could have been done by anyone capable of hitting the on/off switch. I actually want to see how the skintones and colour will look with lighting. Is it over stylised and narratively meaningless? Sure... Is it useful for the person looking to purchase, hell yea. (and I generally hate RED's marketing ways and means).
  16. Haha, this is gonna drag on for a while! They really should be saying who this "official" source is though and the context of the email back and forth. An "official source" could be a sales rep who has no idea and has just answered no to the question "Are media reports true that Nikon is allegedly buying Samsung's NX technology"? A healthy dose of scepticism is required.
  17. You'd hope that a deal of this size would also bring with it the technicians, software engineers etc. So unless they purposefully cripple the video, it seems very promising. They could even improve on it... I've always found Nikon's video modes have a certain natural aesthetic to them. Glad some positive news seems to be coming out of what was seemingly a sad tale.... And you can bet your house that Canon are taking note of all this!

  19. Speed to market, an instant range of well rated, fast lenses with a good AF system (compared to their current mirrorless lens range, which is dreadful). They would also have the benefit of being instantly popular with anyone invested in the NX system. I guess it depends on whether Nikon have any interest in FF mirrorless?
  20. You could make a strong case that the 1DC is still the best 4K camera in the DSLR/Mirrorless bracket. If the 5D4 has a similar image, perhaps with a nicer 1080/60p mode, it would be a very in demand camera. I think the 1DX II may actually give us a few more bangs and whistles though... Possibly even 10bit and a big DR increase.

  22. This was inevitable... We are at/past the point of clear, definable quality increases... Now it is going to be more and more down to lighting, composition, grading etc to create that wow factor in image quality.

  24. LUTs as a starting point are great... Especially if you create a LUT/preset yourself that works for that camera, lighting, skintone etc... I think people get a bit pissy about LUTs because, like effects and filters before hand... Some folk just drop any old LUT on footage and use it as their end point, not start point. This leads to certain looks getting overused and tired.
