  1. Any of these could be shot on Alexa (or even film) and still not look cinematic.

Cinematic is more about camera movement, shot composition, sound etc. From what I have seen of the C300 mk II, I have no doubt that it would have no issues on a hollywood set, even as an A cam.

  2. What I find interesting is the highend fashion look of some parts of video 1 and 3... I could see this becoming the DSMC system that Red always dreamed of (maybe C500 mk II will be higher resolution, to really nail it).

Canon colours and 15 stops = swoon

$15k is alot, but the dual pixel focus, very high DR, very high ISO in a small, lightweight camera checks alot of boxes. So, so tempted, if it had 4K/60p I would have pressed buy now already.

BTW - first video is mostly using face detection AF.

  3. Why are they waiting till september to release it?  They should have examples ready right away.

Same reason Panasonic did with P-Log... Promise now while it is still in the works, deliver later... Keeps people interested

  4. My paid work is almost exclusively nature/landscape (non narrative).... But I am writing a few things... psychological drama sort of stuff based on some of the difficult things I have been through in my life, but also adding alot of fiction to it (and some dark humour, i hope)...  Probably will be a short story rather than a screenplay though.

Also really like indie sci-fi/drama too, like "Another Earth", "Coherence" etc... I have a good concept for this sort of story, but really struggling to flesh it out.

  5. 8 bit can be implemented very well as Canon has shown. But, for more challenging shots, you have to get it spot on in camera.

Bandind aside, one of the biggest flaws of 8 bit is saturation. If you want to push it hard, in post, 8 bit is often not enough and starts to show the colour steps. This is vital for skin tones, gradients etc.

As has been noted though, the only people using words like "holy grail" are those saying 10 bit is not that great. The rest of us just see it as another piece of the puzzle and one we would like to see hit the mainstream.

  6.     Or even easier, if you want to try it scientifically, shoot a raw image with any stills camera you have, save one to 10bit and one to 8bit and compare.

Reworking 1 still image from a raw file to 8 and 10 bit files.... and compressing video to 8 bit and 10 bit are two very different things.

This is why jpgs on a DSLR are far better than a framegrab. There is time to properly map the 14 bits to 8 bits.

  7. How would an Odyssey give you a similar output? Still 8 bit, still 30fps max in 4K, still around 12 stops, still 4K and not 4.6K...confused

but I do agree with the sentiment, it is alot of money to spend and the initial paper spec excitement might not translate well into imagery (same can be said for the Ursa mini too)
