Am I the only one finding it hard to ignore the JVC LS300?
Mattias Burling replied to Mattias Burling's topic in Cameras
Well, Im not a fan of Häagen-Dazs. I like my Ice Cream from Europe. Preferably Italian. But I get your point Still, we are just talking and assuming. I want to "know", not "guess" (I will give them a ring first thing in the morning) -
It gives it the same AF as the camera has with its native glass. No extra function added. Currently for Leica M. http://petapixel.com/2016/01/07/this-adapter-gives-manual-focus-m-lenses-autofocus-on-sony-cameras/

Am I the only one finding it hard to ignore the JVC LS300?

So did I. Alot of us talked about it. And still do. But thats all we do. No one is actually trying it I would love some footage to play with. -
There is a AF adapter that simply moves the lens back and fourth infront of the sensor. It gives old vintage glass AF.

Found a test. Its not looking good in the shadows. Shame as it seems really good in lowlight. -

You can use any lens that covers the s35. Yes you get IS with m4/3 and Canon + metabones. Yes you do. Yup, but given that he didnt have a Histogram means that he didnt have the prime zoom or log. All that came in a later firmware. -
Was driving passed my old neighborhood today, where the "Building of Moire" lays. I had the NX500 in my bag and the R1 buckled in the back seat. I also had some Magic Lantern shots at home. So I stopped. Yeah I exagerated a bit, the untouched look, specially skin is gorgeous. But you hopefully know what I mean -

True, I think I might call JVC this week and pretty much beg them to lend me one -

I mean it ticks pretty much every single box. And its pretty darn affordable. s35 m4/3 mount Log XLR NDs External controls EVF You name it. Plus the nifty stuff like knowing how to crop, prime zoom, etc. The only thing bothering me (and most Ive talked to) is the videos look. But Im thinking it might be that there isn't really anybody using it, thats how should I say, in our segment. I mean most demo videos from cameras, be it cinema cameras or DSLRs, look pretty dull. Its first when people like us get it, slap on our soft vintage glass, grade and cover it in grain that we get excited. Ed David could surely make the e-m5ii shine, the Samsungs look pretty boring without some care, and most Sony demos look like "home videos". I wonder what it would be like, would love to try one. Might even do the (imo) dishonest thing and Buy/return just to put my mind at ease. This video shows a lot of ungraded Log. -
Agreed, the audio, at least in the theatre I watched in was very good. Felt very panoramic and the sounds came from the right directions.

Doesnt sound that big to be honest.

John Brawley was at the announcement and says he wasnt overwhelmed. He likes the bigger model more. But at half price he would be very interested. -
Using Andrews NX1 Log LUT on the NX500
Mattias Burling replied to Mattias Burling's topic in Cameras
No prob, found it an interesting read as well. Yeah those Nikons are really something these days. No there is a Mac version and I belive your spot on about the 16-235. Thats why I tried it, remembering that I tried both with the NX1. -
Using Andrews NX1 Log LUT on the NX500
Mattias Burling replied to Mattias Burling's topic in Cameras
Like I wrote, I have done absolute Zero effort to get the skin right. This first step was all about preserving shadows. Color is the next thing to takle, but not today. -
So I bought an NX500 since its cheaper than chips, pocketable and can cary all my Nikon lenses. Also the Samsung Pancakes are even cheaper theses days. But I was a bit jealous about the Log LUT from Andrew that people put on their NX1 footage. The NX500 doesn't have the DR setting. I decided to experiment and here is what I have so far. Disclaimer: Im not a colorist. I just want it to look decent and be able to use the LUTs I normally use. But mostly I want the footage to behave like I expect it to. I haven't tried to nail the skin or anything. Im mainly looking at latitude here. Firstly I tried to use the OSIRIS Rec 709 to Log LUT. But that looked like garbage. Next I tried to use Andrews NX1 LUT and curves. This looked much better, but it felt very uneven and un-precise. So I tested to flip through the PPs and found that "calm" gave a pretty decent result. Picture Profile "Standard" This is done with Edit Ready and Andrews LUT Picture Profile "Standard" Here I put on a LUT for Generic Log (same will be used through out) Picture Profile "Calm" Same as above Picture Profile "Calm" Same as above As you probably see, the LUTs can be used with a bit of tweaking and curves. But the big cow on the table is the black in the pillow and on the chart. That the darkest square is crushed, fine, but the entire pillow... no thanks. No matter what I couldn't get it to work. I realized that if I could switch the Luminance in the camera ll would be fine... but thats a NX1 feature... So I gave up. But before I went to bed I thought I try converting in Rocky Mountain and then ad Andrews LUT in post. But when opening it I realized it also supports input Luts (don't remember if it used to). And Bingo! Picture Profile "Calm" Andrews LUT + Rocky Mountain Picture Profile "Calm" Andrews LUT + Rocky + Grade LUT Its late but I feel that Im on the way to getting me a decent workflow. Its no super important for this camera since its a BTS/travel camera for me. But still, I want footage to behave the way I expect it to when coloring. Hopefully Im free in daylight to actually shoot with the thing soon. Will try to match it to the Red as well. /M EDIT: One more with a Osiris Kodak Vison LUT + Grain

So good! So so good! I only saw moire if I looked for it. Regular viewers will never notice (they never do). EDIT: man you graded that perfectly. EDIT2: loved how people stared. It only added to the story and feel. PS. What was in the box?
