Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless talk hots up
Mattias Burling replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yup, c100, xc10, c200, 1dxii, Z6, BMCC, BMPCC, D750, NX1, etc. Same story every time. Then people actually use it and go "ohh, it seems that millions of dollars spent by engineers actually did produce more than the imagination of forum people.. who knew?". Its like my old favorite, the "crushed blacks" comment on demo footage from any new camera. History repeats itself. -
What was the fail?

All tests online I've seen so far shows that it is the case. And if it is true my guess is that its because of the higher mp count. Lowlight and DR monsters are usually low mp cameras. But its been a while and a few firmwares since anyone made a test so hopefully we will know for sure soon.

That's very kind of you, looking forward to it! And I hope you are right so I can buy that damn G9, its haunting me

Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless talk hots up

But if we compare which camera that has had the most "amazing" thrown around for every little detail even if it was flat out bad we all know which will win -
Im pretty sure they are using the same iso on both, at least thats what they say. Given that all tests that Ive been able to find plus the simple fact that its a higher res sensor makes me pretty sure that in Cine-D the GH4 and therefor also the G80/85 beats the GH5 in DR. Otherwise Im sure here would be tests to confirm the opposite. Its a shame since this will most likely rule out the G9 as a purchase for me. The GH5 is alot cheaper and has V-log to counter the issue but Im just not willing to buy such a large camera without a top LCD or controls showing me my settings. Bummer, was exited to get back into the m4/3 game with all the mice glass the system has. There was however rumors of a firmware update announced at Photokina, fingers crossed for V-log in the G9.

The user might have something to do with it as well. And lets not forget the countless bugs that new cameras have had over the years that later gets fixed. This might be one of those things. AF at around 3:30. -
Care to show a comparison between the GH4 and GH5 in Cine-D? You would probably be the first showing it so Im sure it would be appreciated by many, if you manage to prove them wrong (According to all the tests I've seen including my own there is no way the GX80 can match the BMMCC, so no need to test that.)
-
All over the internet. It was easily the most bashed camera ever, until the EOS-R was announced and focus shifted.
-
Yeah they can be "expensive", but supply and demand I guess. One thing that I love with my Viltrox EF-MFT besides it being much cheaper and sharper than Metabones (on one stop closed and forward) is that its super easy to adjust infinity/back focus. No tools required. Bang for buck its the best speedbooster I've had. So fingers crossed on a Fuji version.
-
Ive reviewed several Kipon adapters including speedboosters and in my experience they are very good. I see no problem using them instead of Metabones. With that said, we all have different standards and levels of pixel peeping so one has to try to be sure. But for me, my images and videos they are more than good enough. But I have no experience with any of their AF options. But I will be getting it to test it out. Yes its available on ebay (2-3 weeks delivery).
-
Kipon seems to be working on it.
-
Ahh, sorry about that. I read to quickly. Either way, EF with AF is what Im after first and foremost. For a speedbooster effect one has to resort to manual glass. Which for video isn't a real issue for me.

That lens is the best in the lineup imo. Its L-glass territory. Ive used the X-Pro2, X-E3, X-T20 and X-T2 for several gigs. Sports, portrait, documentary etc. I also hired a freelancer that was swinging the X-T2. Together we shot about 5-7000 images in 60 locations and I ended up editing 3000 keepers from both of us. So lets just say I have an empirical experience of Fuji files from various fuji bodies and various lenses in various lighting conditions (inc HSS). I cant tell you how many times Ive gone "wow, what lens was that?" and clicked the EXIF only to see the 90mm f2. If Fuji ends up as my main camera again I will buy that lens.

You get a used A7 + lens + a capable Honor 8 Smartphone + A cold beer or two for the price of a new iPhone. I know which I rather have

EDITED: mistacenly called it a "speed booster", AF adapter is what it is. I just ordered the Viltrox EF to adapter and a X-H1. So in two days I can provide additional info on the adapters performance. There already are a nice test video, posted earlier in the thread, but I haven't found any from the "real world". I suspect it will be popular among X-T3 users if its good enough. I already have the MFT version of the Viltrox and its been surprisingly fast. It can of course miss sometimes. If its critical shooting I would use a native lens for peace of mind. But over all its very fast and accurate with the EF-glass I've tested. I shoot msingle focus with center point or box. Tracking has been pretty bad when I tested it, but since I never use tracking it could be my fault. If the adapter is equally good on the Fuji I will still call it a win for my needs. Pretty stocked. I have debated during the weekend if I should just keep my G80, upgrade to a G9 (want top display) or go X-H1. I bought the X-H1 open box so if I don't like it I can sell it if without much loss. If the IBIS isnt good enough and Im willing to sacrifice DR I can be confident in upgrading to the G9. If it gets to stick around the X-T3 hopefully means that an X-H2 can be in my upgrade path.

Im not trusting some dude, I'm looking at actual images. Lab tests are fun but doesn't tell you about real performance. btw, Thats for stills. Its probably more like 10. Maybe 12 in V-log with a bit of luck and if the circumstances are perfect. For 13 you are in Blackmagic territory. Nikon can do it. The old Sony A7s cant, but the newer once might. Thanks, Didn't notice what isos where uses. Will recheck. Vlog would be cool but the G9 doesn't have it. Im only looking at GH5 vs GH4 tests because they are way easier to find than G85 vs G9 (same sensors) EDIT: Where did you read about the ISOs used, cant find any info in the description or video?
-
I wouldn't call it garbage, absolutely not, its great. With that said, that DXO chart doesn't measure image quality so its quite useless as a sourse when debating how good it is.
-
According to this test the GH5 looks like it has worse dynamic range than the GH4 in Cine D. It makes sense given the larger pixels. Does anyone know of any other tests on the subject or have the cameras and feel like uploading some files? I've been shooting all weekend with the G85 to determine if I should get the G9, the X-H1 or something else. I could go G9 but getting even lower than the already quite terrible DR isn't very exciting. (I have considered the GH5 wich is way cheaper than the other two, but I need a top LCD. Otherwise I would have just stuck to the G85.)
-
Just by looking at the thumb nail the GH5 has less DR.
-
I would like to see those as well. Ive spent a lot of time this weekend trying to find some good DR tests of the GH5 compared to Fuji and found nothing. The GH5 is on a massive sale now but not being able to confirm its DR is holding me back.
-
Yeah, looks a bit fiddly. But Im sure they can make it better. Specially on something like a X-H2 where making the camera bigger wouldn't be an issue. Yup, like I said, "If that's an important feature is of course up to the individual shooter". For me its a big deal and without it I often risk missing the moment or the exposure.
-
Is the fit and finish much different from an X-H1 or X-T2 in the mechanism? When I've been using those I always felt, "why doesn't this flip all the way".
-
Fuji has a screen that both tilts and flips around to selfie mode. But it sits on the X-T100. EDIT: @Andrew Reid beat me to it. BTW, when using the touch screen on my G80 the screen position makes my hand pass the EVF sensor blacking out the screen... argh..
-
One thing the Sony most likely won't get is the controls. Which for some is simply a faster way of operating and when using it also acts as a top display. I've been shooting my 6D next to my Panasonic G80 for a few days. Both work fine and complement each other quite well. But one thing that constantly bugs me on the Panasonic, and even more since it doesn't have a tilt screen, is the lack of a top display. It definitely slows me down when a situation occurs. The X-T3 won't get one but imo doesn't really need one either. One can just look down and see all the settings, even when its turned off. If that's an important feature is of course up to the individual shooter. For me it's gotten to the point where Im thinking about buying a Panasonic G9 even though it costs more used than a brand new GH5. X-H1 is still a tasty option which of course has both.
