  1. And TV sales are still declining. Even if 4K TVs sell more and more compared to HD TVs, in total its still a decline. (I got yelled at a few years ago for saying that as well, and showing reports as sources didn't help. I was an idiot because I didn't believe every single person in the worlds biggest reason for getting out of bed was to buy a 4K TV ) They release a report yes. But not an annual report like pretty much every other company has done for years. But they did say that they where going to start releasing proper reports from 2017 and onwards. There where a lot of media coverage on the event that they where going to start releasing reports again. Im just going by common sense and standard business practice. Profit is reported because a corporations soul purpose to exist is to make it. And believe me, I want to be proven wrong. But no such evidence has ever been showed to me. Plenty of people have linked to the "report" and said "read this". And my answer is "I did, you most likely didn't, because it only strengthens my suspicion". Exactly. People bought HD because they where also flat screen. Now they don't see a reason. Just like with 3D. Soon I bet people will be mad if we say that HDR probably will be a good 5-10 years as well.
  2. Sorry but this I simply don't believe. On niche forums maybe. But I say not even 1 out of 200 you meet on the street regularly watch 4K content on a 4K TV. Most of them don't even watch 1080p all that often. My source is Sonys "anual reports" (they haven't released proper once on years, are supposed to start this year) where they bake it in with other businesses since it's not strong enough. I haven't read Panasonic's latest one but in the last it looks they lost money on their cameras as well. Companies will tell you when they make a profit. Because it would raise the stocks.
  3. How dare they make stuff for people with less money. Only rich people should be allowed to take pictures.
  4. Exactly, Sony cant seem to convert enough shooters to make money on the cameras. If they did they would brag about it. So my prediction still stands. Sony, Panasonic and Nikon. At least one has to go, sooner or later. (And of course Pentax but they are sadly not a player anymore. Even though the GRii is still a major success and their 360 cameras seems pretty popular.) Lets check in on the subject again in another year. Maybe by then 4K is a house hold standard. I was screamed at already three years ago because I didn't believe the majority of the worlds population would switch to 4K TVs within a year... things move slower than we wish on forums I say give it another 5-10 years, closer to 10. (Like the downfall of canon and the death of the DSLR, feels like thats been around the corner forever. Definitely longer than the death of film.. )
  5. Yup. Leica is making money as well. Its actually so profitable that Blackstone was ready to get return on their investment. Talk about a successful placement from those guys. They saw the merited and well trained horse in the back that the crowed somehow missed, blinded by the flamboyant younger stallions in the front.
  6. And Sony stil haven't been able to report profit on interchangeable lens still cameras. I seriously doubt Panasonic makes money when selling a GH5. It probably at loss as well.
  7. Exactly. For some being available in a store close by is enough to be "best". As a side note, I went through the popular tourist district (gamla stan) in Stockholm today. Lots of people from Japan, Finland and Russia walking around taking pictures. I would say 30-40% where smartphones. I saw a couple of bridge cameras and advanced compacts. One Fuji One Olympus The rest where Canon DSLRs, they outnumbered the smartphones I saw in use. But of course every single person most likely has one. (not a single Pansony or Nikon in sight.)
  8. Thats not one word. Its an abbreviation of three words
  9. The only 4K camera that I have used that's ever shown any signs of aliasing was the NX1 (and so rare its a non issue) Canon included. So I would be very surprised if it turned out to be a problem with this.
  10. You don't need a particularly high resolution for a billboard.
  11. Developing at home is very easy and cost effective. No darkroom required. And if you have a digital camera that shoots raw you can make DIY set-up that is just as goos as the best scanners out there. Most pro labs around here have switched to camera scanning. This is Kodak Vision 50D from Cinestill. I also have the medium format version but haven't used it yet. (Im glad you dig my IG)
  12. Another huge reason that pushed me towards stills was also the ability to shoot film every single day without spending much money. Cinestill even makes Kodak Motion Picture very available for still shooters. Raw and Film in your bag at all times. And it also opens up the door to very affordable medium and even large format. It's intoxicating
  13. Lots of good input. Its interesting to read the different experiences and preferences we have. Only thing I will ad is, a powerful picture can capture sound better than any microphone imo. But its not easy
  14. This is just a little something I shot on the subway, absolutely nothing special. But it made me think. I used to shoot a lot of casual video on the streets. But ever since I became passionate about stills, more specifically street photography I never do it. Mostly because when recording video I feel like Im just missing out on great stills. An this was no exception. In fact its 1.5 years since I shot casual video out and about if we don't count "test shots" around the house. The irony is that I started shooting street photography to become a better videographer. I used to love shooting video. The best part for me was composition and grading. So I started taking Raw stills in order to get to practice bigger quantities of grading. The plan was to eventually make a video about it and recommend all aspiring videographers to shoot a lot of stills. Just like the DP's in the Zacuto shoot out says (forgot which). But along the way it completely switched on me. I started liking stills more. Specially the challenge. To capture a whole scene, the entire atmosphere, all the feelings in one single frame. Compressing an entire story into one single moment.
Im not in anyway implying that Im good at it. But I love trying. Now when I watch vlogging street shooters on youtube, you know the type, Gopro in the hot shoe and a montage to hip-hop beats, I just get annoyed. In the video montages they miss out on so many great images.
Same thing for me today. In this short video montage of nothingness I see at least 4 potentially great images. So, thats it. I still recommend all here that are aspiring DP's to shoot more stills. With something like a GRii you can always have it ready. Look for light, composition and story.
Just be aware that you might switch to the dark side like I have. Don’t underestimate its power. What about you guys? Who shoots stills, why, why not? (btw, really soft lens in action here. It looked awesome with gorilla grain on my computer but I removed it since youtube always messes it up imo. And therefor its pretty darn soft. A couple of focus misses doesn't help either.)
  15. Yup. The preproduction 200mbit HD that was released is what I always liked the most from the GH4 and it has many times tempted me to buy one. Specially now when they are so cheap. I just wished I could get it in the smaller bodies.
  16. I agree. Im sounding like a broken record when I say. Download a clip, import into NLE, check the waveform. Loads of info in the shadows ready to be brought back.
  17. It looked like added grain to me, if its noise its good looking noise imo.
  18. I got me two sets of D-Mounts. Three Kern Paillards and two Yashicas. They cost me €12 + €6 + shipping for all of them and included two cameras as rear caps. If someone wonders about the specs compared to a modern Canon or Panasonic equivalent they are smaller, cheaper and better built with loads of character. So better speced indeed Here is a sample of the Kern 13mm f1.8 Here the Kern and Yashica 13mm goes head to head. Yashica Kern Paillard
  19. Yey, its been way to long since our last Guess the Camera. I guess its still a refrigerator as first price? I will look on a bigger screen and get back to you shortly. EDIT: Some of it reminds me of the pocket camera and some things doesn't. But that will be my guess.
  20. You think it will be that fast? Thats only like GH6 and 5Dv away. So in the a6995 or A7xxx then.
  21. He obviously think its worth it, all the power to him. To bring it somewhat back on topic. Its the same thing with film vs digital. Some would prefer shooting on digital even if they could afford film. I dont get it but if it makes them happy
  22. https://***URL removed***/news/1945724359/sensor-breakthrough-sony-has-developed-a-backlit-cmos-sensor-with-global-shutter Sounds nice. One of the biggest reasons I loved the BMPC4K, other than it being 4K raw when 4K wasn't event that available was the GS. On the Bolex it was a key feature as well. And we are many that has shot with the a6300/6500 with mixed feelings due to the jello. There might be light at the end of the tunnel.
  23. Then you could get the 35mm WR later on as a smaller in between option. Because the WRs are really small and light compared to the others and sometimes its nice to be able to strip it down a bit. And of course you get the WR for some harsh conditions. But either way they are all very capable lenses. And IQ/€ they are top notch imo.
