The Leica SL as upgrade for Sony A7R II shooters
Mattias Burling replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
No these are the correct figures. If you have others showing how they are missleading please present them. All I did was remind people that alot, and I mean alot of electronics are made in Japan and Germany. And it is very important in discussions regarding products like Leica where there is no end to people talking about money. They always seems to forget the very simple rule. You get what you pay for. -
The Leica SL as upgrade for Sony A7R II shooters

Alot of electronics is made in Germany. Just look at the iphone. Its designed in the US and assembled in china. But the majority of the iphones components and profit comes and goes from Germany, Japan and South Korea. -

The Leica SL as upgrade for Sony A7R II shooters

Very cool! The SL has been a dream camera since release for sure. Luckily its already coming down a bit on the used market. Im watching it like a hawk But as we know it gets a lot of hate for being a Leica and prepare for it. Luckily you have thick enough skin to handle it. Its 99.99% jealousy anyway. I get stupid comments from people almost daily that want to nitpick some feature or tidbit on my Leica M reviews. And pretty much always when I explain why I like or dislike a certain feature they turn to attacks to protect their low self esteem regarding their Fuji/Panasony/Canikon/What have you. I have the Medium Format speedbooster on the way, sadly only for Sony-E. Would be very cool to see how it would go on your SL. Anyway, congratulations. Leica is a total Drug. Ive so far bought two M8, an M9 and a M9 Monochrome. Right now Im debating a X, X1 or T. Decisions, decisions, decisions.... Looking forward to seeing what you do with it. -
Im not sure I understand all the hate towards that video. Thought it was fine for what it is. I learned a thing or two about the GH5 from it. And its not like I paid the guy.

First you say its false and then you agree with me.... and no Im not the one who brought it up. You also say, "Yes, but if you use the "equivalent" aperture, then there are no differences in DoF." My point exactly, you change the exposure. Not equivalent at all. For me its important to expose properly. "As stated and shown multiple times in various threads, compression depends only on the distance from the subject, nothing to do with the focal length or the sensor size. " My point exactly.

The same old story pops up online all the time. Doesn't matter how many times it gets explained. DOF and Exposure doesn't change with a crop sensor. Its just a crop. And that's why a FF never can emulate MF with so called "equivalent lenses". Just like a 1" can never look exactly like a FF. If you change lens to get more SDOF youve done just that. Changed lens. Which means a different background compression. One can see it as a problem or use it as an advantage. Its up to the shooter. I choose the later. Example: I like using a 35mm on the street since I can then fill the frame with a person from a comfortable distance. Only problem is that the DOF is so shallow at f8 set at 3m (2-5m) that its tough to get things on focus. If I instead use a 17mm lens at f8 set to 3m I get from about 1m to Infinity. Much better. But its to wide, people dont fill the frame as easily. They look tiny. Solution, m4/3 crop sensor camera. Exposure does not change. The DOF is still roughly 1m to Infinity. The only thing thats changed is the crop. I can now fill the frame from roughly the same distance as the 35mm on the FF. Comparing the 35mm on FF side by side to the 17mm MFT there is another difference though. Background compression. It has changed because they are different focal lengts. A 17mm and a 35mm. So the "equivalent" wasnt 100% equivalent after all. So a crop is a crop is a crop is a crop... This is why Medium Format and Large Format is cool. I can use a 90mm portrait lens, with its DOF and compression. But still see as much background and stay at the same comfortable distance as I would with a 35ish mm on FF. "Equivalent lenses" is only for distance. A FF can never emulate a MF. Exposure and DOF is unaffected. The biggest reason for all the fuss imo is that soooooo many people only stare at DOF, DOF, DOF and DOF. They go blind to all the other characteristics of an image. Same when you try to discuss "image quality" with a large group. At least one sees sharpness and only sharpness as image quality. The discussion is pointless because anyone not picking the sharpest image is brushed off as an "idiot". The whole thing is just so tiering. I made a video on sensor sizes recently so I could have just a link to post every time the discussion gets brought up. But I haven't had time to upload it yet. And when I see all the heat people get from the DOF cruisaders Im not even sure its worth it.

I feel that these fell out of the buzz a bit, even now when they are out in the stores. And specially now when there is so much buzz around the Fuji MF camera. I mean who doesn't want Medium Format on the cheap? The adapter + a $100 Pentax 645 Lens + a $500 A7 gives you a pretty affordable Medium Format kit. I had the A7 and liked it a lot. Much more than I liked the A7ii and A7sii because of the quality/$. Obviously Im not interested in gaining any resolution like some, Im after the MF aesthetics. Meaning, being able to use a portrait lens with its DOF and compression but from a nicer distance. So pretty much the same but opposite reason why MFT and APS-C is so nice for street photography and manual focus. Philip Blooms Cat tests with the adapter + A7rii. Personally its still the cost holding me back. I dont care about using it for video and for stills Film is still way cheaper. My old Yashica D for $100 is sharp as a knife. My old $50 Zeiss Nettax is pocketable. My mothers old Certo can be had for $10, is pocketable (jacket) and is simpler to use than a smartphone. The problem is that they aren't exactly street photo friendly. Usable bur not ideal. Not like a range finder. So after two days of constant hovering over the order button on the adapter and late nights looking at samples form the Fuji GX I decided to go another route. 6x9 Medium Format Fuji Rangefinder Compact Camera

Yup, its already a bit to big for the traffic. Problem comes if the forum gets big, gets lots of sub forums and then for what ever reason experiences a drop in numbers. Then it dies pretty much over night. -

Thanks, yeah the ducks was quite friendly that day. And Gunpowder is smashing, good as new -
All cameras Im aware of allows shooting with such lenses and auto ISO in aperture priority. And of course they all work in manual but not all cameras allow auto iso in manual. I guess some older digital cameras wont work but I cant say which once that would be.

Cyberphoto still has the a great deal on a NX1. Its used but Mint and with warranty. Please someone buy it before I do -NX1 + 2 batteries + 16-50 S + Vertical Grip + external Charger € 1200 Its a bit more than I paid for my last two NX1 kits but still very good price imo. -
I would hold of on buying the Crane for one month and four days. Not saying a better one is on the horizon, but there could be...

I understand it as the camera allows the use of exposure comp in manual mode with auto ISO. If so, that's not exactly common and something people always scream about in comment sections on the rumor sites. None of my cameras can do it. Not sure that's what he meant though

I think a thread is enough. Nothing kills forums faster than sub forums. -
I think there is a pretty decent thread here on the forum somewhere. There is a great group on Facebook (Vintage lens for video). There is also a group called C-Mount for m4/3 but I left the group after one of the moderators spread hateful propaganda against minorities. Ive used a lot of cool c-mounts but mostly on s16 (close to the gh4 crop). Here are some tests Ive made with various C-Mounts. Kern Pailards Zeiss Tevidon Cheap Crap C-Mount Zoom

The GX80/85 is only $420 brand new with warranty and the G80/85 is $715. Can someone who has used both pitch the idea on why one would save some cash or go for the bigger one? Besides the CineD which I think is nice but not a "need" and the mic input which I would never use. Also none of them would be used very much for stills, I have another camera for that. No pro work with them either, not even as B-Cam. This is for the family etc.

My point exactly! Accept for the last part. Your knowledge can definitely protect you from hardware flaws in the same way it protects you from the horrible consequences of using camera A over camera B. My point is: The shooter is the key. Learn how to shoot and use light and almost any camera will do. But learn your cameras pros and cons so you can work with and around them. Get the camera that suits your needs. Every camera out there, every single one, has huge deal breaking flaws. You just have to pick the once you can live with

Imo its always important to think through what the camera is supposed to be good at. The XC10 is 100% a full on professional camera. Period. But that doesn't mean that I would recommend it for fashion shoots or as A-cam on a music video. That's just weird. Its like me recommending an Alexa as a helmet camera... If one would have analyzed it beforehand it might have gone a little like this: "Ok what segment is this meant for, what cameras is it replacing?" "Ahh, its a step up for mainly journalists and reporters that use the XA20 and XF100/200 today. Loads of paper and webb journalists use those for the online content. Quick interviews, in house communication, quick stops at press conferences." "Wait, would anyone use those cameras for my fashion shoots?" "Nope, no one uses small sensor run-n-gun camcorders for my type of videos, I guess its not for me." In the end the only way forward is to bite the bullet and get a large sensor cinema camera. You can use still cameras or try to cram a camera like the XC10 into segments where it doesn't belong. But then you have to take the consequences of the compromise. My guess is that the G80, GH5, A7sii, etc will keep on getting replaced every year until they are replaced with something like a C100 or other camera meant for the job.
-
Ive never seen any ghosting when shooting the XC10. Ive never seen it in your footage either until you pointed it out on a freeze frame. Haven't looked through my footage in search for it either, maybe its there, maybe it isn't. Still a great camera imo.

Its all down to taste. Personally I hated the a6300 with every inch of my body so I don't have to go to the X-T2 to find a camera I like better. Even a G7 is way better for my needs and that's much much cheaper than a a6300. My tip, stop being puzzled why people choose gear that you don't like. They are just different
