NO!!! Digital Bolex has stopped making cameras!
Mattias Burling replied to Dave Maze's topic in Cameras
Don't think there is such a place where I live. There are few rental shops and most costs more than shooting film. -

Ahh, yeah I've thought about it. But it seems like a lot of work -

Because its to expensive. Its much cheaper to buy and I usually turn profit. For work is a different matter. Hopefully something new comes along. The DB team has hinted many times that they are looking at possible new models. -
I shoot both FF and MF on a project as we speak. And the difference is like the difference between m4/3 and FF. If one can't tell the difference then that's OK to.

Believe me, I'm going over the numbers again and again. The problem is that I shoot film every day. Its a running expense. My YouTube is just a hobby. So is my freelance. For work I never use my own gear, never have. So a Bolex is just a hobby for me. Which is OK. But to tell my GF that I need to spend all that cash on both film and digital video doesn't feel right. Its how it is unfortunately. -

Its like the Leica Monochrom I had. It cost more than my M9, still worth it. -

Better image, more features and out of the box costs more, that's just how it is. A BMPCC + 5h battery + Dual XLR Audio Recorder with analog gain + a couple of hours of SD cards = Pretty much the same price, but with rolling shutter, less features, cmos look and more moire. Imo its a good price. Doubt a URSA Micro would be cheaper. I love my Blaclmagic so nothing against it. But bang for buck the D16 wins imo. See above. -
Jpegs are fine in the same way that avchd is fine. But if you don't want crushed shadows and blown out highlights, then Raw is the way to go.

Would be cool, but also the oposite. Heat is a problem. -

Yes you are missing something. We always speek directly with the DB Team on their FB The site has had a bump, it will be up soon. Its the commerce side of it that experienced a bug of some sort. Warantys are valid and manufactoring will continue this week out. But your right, its not as bad as Samsung. They where honest and open instead of the crap Samsung pulled. -

Yeah its weird that it got put in a strange segment even though its pretty much a URSA Micro or BMPCCmkii long before they arrived. And to this date still beats them on many features. It might also have been the low price. At $3k people assumed is was like a bmpcc when it was closer to much bigger boys. I also think, how sad it may be, that vanity is a big thing in this industry. Thats why Red puts sculs and crap on their cameras. -

They release new firmwares all the time. Its not an instant shut down. They are stopping the manufacturing of the D16. Upgrades and service will still be available. -

What a shame. Imo the most complete cinema package and most bang for buck one can get for raw video. Way more suited for pro work than a Pocket and also much more fun for the enthusiasts. But, like it or not, its pretty logical. They only make one model and sooner or later they need a new one or pull out. I actually have mine out for sale, thinking I can buy it again sometime. But now I'm gonna rethink. -
They didnt do it live.

5 reasons why I will be getting a Panasonic GH5
Mattias Burling replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Bright light is my nr1 issue the last couple of years. ISO800 solved any lowlight problems I ever had. The Digital Bolex gives me a nice iso 160. But I dream of a nice and clean native ISO 50. The constant ND workaround is getting boring. I've started skipping the 180 degree shutter to get around it. -
I have yet to come across a lens where it wasnt enough to dremel the adapter. Accept for tevidon where you switch the mount instead.
-
I dremeled my adapter instead, keeps the lenses looking nice.

Don't assume, stick to what you know. You haven't been in this conversation that's been going on for two years, if you had been I don't think you would think so. When a person basically calls anyone who doesn't shoot 4K or more exactly a Samsung NX1 an "idiot", " hack", "uninformed", etc and never stop and think, not for one second, that people just might not agree, then one will get a few cheap shots. I think you need to lift your eyes a little and realize that not everything is about you. I never said that 4K automatically means low bitrate. I was talking about one specific camera. I myself use lowbitrate consumer 4K all the time. But I don't think Tarantino and Spielberg are stupid idiots who would switch to a NX1 for their movies if someone showed them one. And if they rejected it go on to calling them "hacks". But maybe your right, maybe it won't be an intelligent conversation. A bit patronizing, but maybe your right.

Last year they switched from s16mm film to Arri Amira. Don't know about this year, I guess its still the Amira.
-
Think its best to let it go. I dont know how many times I've seen the argument that the biggest filmmakers, biggest producers of nature films, TV etc is just "less informed", " don't know better" or "unaware" of the awesomeness that is low bitrate, low DR, bad RS but surprisingly overly sharp image from a consumer stills camera.

Never used a GH4 so I wouldn't know. It covers my sensor completely. Yeah I wish they could be used on Canon as well. At least they go on nicely on Bkackmagic and other mft. I also dig the 50mm f1,5 a lot. Preforms way over its price. Super cheap on the used market as well.
-
BTW, from shooting Leicas the last months I can say I really dig the Voigtlander M lenses. My favorite by far due the to the quality/€ is the 28mm f2.0 Ultron. Gets you really broad and nice zones for zone focus with a pretty wide aperture and the focus is buttery smooth. Not like the 15mm where everything from 0.7m to infinity is in focus at f4.5, but still. Here is a sample, again using T-Max100. Hanging Around Down Town by Mattias Burling, on Flickr

The $20 fujian 35mm f1.7 covers APS-C so that might be a good and cheap start.

Those are all fun lenses, good steal. Might vignette a tad on the pocket but not to bad. Thats one of the perks with the Bolex. Almost all C-mounts cover.
