To add @hyalinejim and @squig gave me the most helpful information I found anywhere online about setup and exposure when I first started with my 5D3. Little things like exact shutter speed, the ETTR Hint, etc, etc were so valuable. Now the conventional wisdom is that to get the best results you want to expose to the right as far as possible to avoid that horrible chroma noise but then @zerocool22 has that amazing Japan Wolf video and I believe he exposed to the middle and used noise reduction? And there’s also the guy who made that Alexa LUT that says to get better color fidelity you should shoot ML Raw 1 stop under. Either way @kidzrevil, whichever method you prefer... you’re off to a great start and, resolution aside, I don’t think I’ve seen a more organic image from any of your previous work. Once you get comfortable with the workflow and get your in camera settings down, I think this will become your go to camera.

Speaking of metering... has anyone used the Histobar with ETTR Hint? I read the post a1ex wrote up on it and I have found it quite useful at 0.5 but I’m still testing it out. I do like how it appears off frame as sometimes the Histogram and Spotmeter can be distracting for composition. With the Raw Histogram I can usually get good exposure by making sure I back off a little more after the red channel stops clipping... although it isnt a scientific method, nor consistent. The one good thing about Canon and Raw is that it is really tough to get bad skin tones but consistency is important so I’m really trying to fine tune a quick approach. Great info. So do you use a combo of the Spotmeter and Raw Histogram to Check your color clipping? Or would you recommend the Spotmeter for subject exposure and zebras for an overall overexposure metric?

Thanks, that’s one of my better attempts. With the bad weather out here, I’ve been going through one old footage and trying some different workflows, so I’ll definitely keep an eye out for that program.

Resolve has the amazing highlight recovery tool that has saved my ass in some high contrast shots. Plus if you use Resolve as an intermediary, you can export as ProRes and still have plenty of wiggle room to grade in Premiere. For instance, using the Raw Histogram with ETTR Hint I took this shot that I did a quick transfer to ProRes using the Footage App (which I like a lot)... With the sun behind his head, it was just too blown to correct. Now I processed the same shot through Resolve using the Highlight Recovery and... voila... I do agree with Seku, Juan Melara’s linear to Log-C method is really cool and works beautifully.

The V90 cards needed to shoot the highest bitrate on the GH5s costs more than CF cards. An for the money, the GH5s just cannot match the IQ of the 1DC. But there are other perks to the GH5s... hmm... tough call. I’d go with the 1DC every day of the week.

I’d say 90-95% of YT videos are watched on smart phones... So it comes down to AF and color science... it’s as simple as that.

And the Panasonic one will cost $5 more but it doesn’t spin... they wouldn’t want to lose sales on their $1 model. They also have their spinning, microwave carousels to consider...

So, as much as I love my Canon lenses, I am having a lot of fun messing around with vintage lenses and ML Raw. I still cannot believe how amazing the Minolta 35mm 1.8 is on the 5D3. Here are a few more shots... My next big goal is to convert a 58mm 1.2. But in the meantime, I think I’m going to buy a Helios... it is one vintage lens that has eluded me for the past 5 years. I found one that is listed as New Other in EF Mount? Did the Soviets make a Helios in the EF Mount? I believe it’s the 44-M 7... maybe? Also has anyone used any of the new Zenit Helios lenses? I saw a 50mm 1.2 that looks intriguing. And here’s one more from the Minolta. Also I want to add so there isn’t any confusion to some users that are unaware... Minolta lenses will not adapt to Canon EF without having the lens modified. There are adapters but they have a corrective glass inside that is not of good quality.

I wasn’t disputing that he was getting compensated for his time... I’m disputing that his review cannot be trusted due to his appearance. That becomes a question of his character. Under your rules of trusted sources, how could you even trust any positive post about the GH5/GH5s by Neumann Films?

I can’t speak for Philip Bloom’s personal and professional ethics. I don’t know the man. He seems fairly honest with his reviews. I do know he received the camera about a month ago. And although I don’t know the details of his upcoming appearance at this trade show, I’d prefer to assume the best than the worst. And at this point there’s no indication to assume otherwise. Just my opinion.

Interestingly enough, I was considering the M6 as a glove box cam last fall. The video seemed good and as you said... as good as the original M but now with all of the rumors of multiple mirrorless cameras being released this year from Canon, I’ve decided to hold off. Btw, how is the 22mm with DPAF?

I believe it’s a hinged loupe... if not, then they’re readily available. I actually don’t like loupes anyway... I just posted because cantsin inquired. A pistol grip or the Krasnogorsk K-3 pistol grip/shoulder stock combo could be pretty good for extra points of contact. Btw, I was checking out your Vimeo page and out of curiosity... what camera did you use to shoot that Monk Exile video? The C100ii?

Yeah, that would be pretty epic. The latest rumor I read was Canon may put out two versions... one with an EF mount and one with an EF-M mount. Hopefully they’ll release the two with different sensors... the ef-m with the one inch sensor and the EF with a S35mm... the EF version may just be the sequel to the C100ii everybody has been waiting for. Either way it seems like Canon could have an interesting year.

Speaking of the XC10... I noticed BH just lowered the price from $1999 to $1799 with the card and card reader and $1599 for just the camera. In fact, it’s a special order only now, so I am thinking maybe the rumored, interchangeable lens version, may be true.

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with a lot of the Canon lenses... even the slower “L” zoom lenses are amazing. I shot these with the 5D Mark iii and ML Raw using the 24-70mm f/4 lens... Of course with the smaller, Super 35mm sensor of the Ursa, the faster zooms will be better.

Yup, that’s the one. Of course you can probably do a little better on eBay, if you have some patience. And here’s a lowlight video with the Canon lens on the Ursa... And here’s some beautiful 2K ProRes shot with that Canon lens...
