  1. When he (is that you?) gets right-hooked in front of the lit building, the image looks 3D, the bokeh is so subtle, yet brilliant. Who needs an f/1.4 when you have oval discs.

Zeiss lenses really are amazing. From any era, with any manufacturer. From the Zeiss Jena to the Zeiss Milvus, there is something special in their glass. I recently bought the Contax Zeiss 50mm 1.7, I haven't had the chance to give it a good workout yet, but from the minute shot of my cat... It looks great. Uh oh... I feel a Distagon in my future... I need a second job.
  3. Funny you say that, I just saw a bunch of used zacutos on eBay for about 4 or 500.

So, I have been whittling down my lenses and replacing some with faster versions. Now I have two nice sets of Nikkors and Minoltas. I have a bad case of LBA, so I have been quenching my appetite with m42 lenses. Last week I bought a Chinon 55mm f1.7 and a 28mm 2.8. This week I picked up a Yashinon DS 50mm 1.4 and a DS 28mm 2.8. They arrived yesterday, but haven't had a chance to shoot with them. Then this morning I found a great deal on the Takumar 35mm f2, so I pounced on that. Has anyone used any of these lenses? Or do you have any suggestions on some obscure m42 lenses that have some interesting character? Oh yeah, if anybody is looking for a really low contrast wide angle, I bought a Soligor 21mm, in MD mount, but they made that lens in most common mounts from that time, and wide open it is the most low contrast lens I own... It almost looks like log footage.
  5. Dang!!! That DR is insane. This has probably been discussed multiple times, but what do the oval inserts do... Is it a faux anamorphic?
  6. Yeah, I found a 3" EVF by accident, they seem to run about 200 bucks. http://m.ebay.com/itm/FEELWORLD-3-5-EVF-TFT-LCD-HDMI-in-out-Electronic-ViewFinder-Focus-HD-Monitor-/231719304735?nav=SEARCH

It's been a year since I used it, but I remember it being great. I "usually" shoot wide open and use a variable ND and it was great... Stopped down it was tack sharp. A lot of people swear by the 3.5 or the 4 version but I wanted the speed. But you're right, the Nikkors just ooze cinematic analog. I, personally, would rather have that than the clean, sterile look of new lenses.

Nikon was making those ais lenses well into this century, the coatings may have gotten a little better, but they're essentially the same lenses as the ones made in the 80s. I had the 20mm and it was a really nice lens.
  9. I agree the BMMCC is the better deal, even with the external monitor, but if they drop the price of the pocket to 500 bucks again, it's a no brainer for me. With the BMMCC's size, I don't want to encumber it with a huge display. It is the perfect high end guerilla filmmaking camera if you can keep the footprint small. So, I'm looking for rig possibilities that keep the monitor in line with the camera body. Pop it on an L-Bracket or small 2 handled cage and it would be a tiny, inconspicuous beast.
  10. I am thinking something along these lines but I would rather it swivel down. Am also thinking an EVF may be a good solution as well. I saw a 3" EVF on eBay that sells for around 200 bucks. I'm still weighing my options and wondering if they will lower the cost of the pocket once the micro is released. If they do, I may just get one of those instead.
  11. I was thinking about a small, tripod head that has the 90 degree horizontal to vertical hinge. or literally just a hinge bolted to the top of the cage and replace the pin with a bolt and wing nut so you can tighten it up.
  12. I am hoping somebody will make a cage that will have a back swivel attachment. The camera is so small, I'd like to keep the footprint as small as possible... Otherwise what's the point?
  13. What are the chances SmallHD or one of the other 3rd Party equipment manufacturers will make a cage that integrates an external monitor with the BMMCC for a more unified rig, set up?
  14. Based on the deep focus, I am going to guess a small sensor camera, so I think it's either an LX100 or an RX10ii or RX100 iv... the lens part was a trick question. I assume I'm wrong, but either way I like the look.
  15. richg. I remember reading about that with saving private ryan. Interesting.
  16. You know he is one of the moderators here? If you think low contrast lenses might help, you may want to try one of Tokina's old RMC zoom lenses. Andy Lee has posted a lot about their low contrast glory.
  17. Yeah, I think that lens is optimized for the sensor, or vice versa. I would be curious to learn if the macroblocking is present under the same circumstance when shot with the 16-50s as it is when shot with one of your lenses.
  18. Which came first the NX1 or the 16-50s?
  19. I don't think anyone is questioning your character. Well, I can only speak for myself, but I believe your motives are just. But I also believe when we have such a huge desire to do the right thing, it can be very easy to find the wrong in everything. As outsiders, the only facts we have is that every entity... Be it union, political, corporate, media, etc..., has an agenda and a bottom line. You're right, I don't know you and I apologize if I, personally, questioned your integrity, but when all else is said and done, I appreciate your craft and have learned a lot from you. So, thank you and keep fighting the good fight.

Am not sure if it was the camera, the vision color or your grading, but one of the naval videos looks like an old, technicolor movie. A look I personally love. I am really interested in seeing what the gh5 has in store and I may just wait until they announce that before I make a decision. When I first used the G7, it instantaneously felt like I was using a basic cinema camera. So, I can imagine the gh4 or gh5 would be that much better. I think Panasonic would be really smart to introduce Raw video with the gh5. I've always seen Sony and Panasonic as natural competitors and I think Raw would be such a brilliant way to distinguish them self. Hell, they could literally keep all of the same features as the gh4 and add 1080p or 2K Raw with ibis and the 16mp sensor for better lowlight and I'd be a buyer. Hell, I would probably sell almost every lens I have to get those features. They could even crop the Raw to S16, nearly eliminating any aliasing and I'd still be ecstatic.

I hear ya. I really like some of your naval videos with the gh4. Some of your best work, IMO. How did you find the gh4 for stills? I've been drooling over the pocket for years, so I should just save for that and forget everything else. Raw or prores looks amazing. A good loupe and a bunch of batteries and I'm set. I already have a ton of fast c-mount lenses and adapters that will pair nicely with it. Or go with the micro for the 60p and global shutter. I'll have to pick up and evf or an external screen, though. Too many dang choices.

Is the bottom photo taken with the 85mm? I have been obsessed with f2 lenses, so I have been eyeing the 85mm ai f2 lens, but am looking to get one for around a hundred. Eventually I'll find one. I am actually in a little of quandary... I am looking to pick up another camera. I want to start shooting some stills, but I don't think I want to use the G7. As you know, I also have the NX500 which should be decent for stills, but I am really enjoying the video I have seen from the D5500 and/or the D7200. It seems like either would be good for stills... But I am also really interested in shooting Raw video on the Pocket or the upcoming Micro. I will probably sell off the NX500 to help fund my next camera. For the hybrid purposes, the Nikons seem like a more logical choice, but I'm not sure how much still work I'll actually do. Hmm. Idk. Just thinking out "loud" really. It's great to see how good the Raw stills are with the NX1 though.

They look great... It doesn't hurt that your subject is stunning. These are with the Nikkors and the NX1 Raw?
  24. Regarding The Reverent, I'm sorry but I do not feel bad for people who are paid handsomely for a job they knew they were signing up for. In the end, due to the difficulties of production, they earned more money than what they assumed.
  25. I really think the glaring omission from your argument is capitalism vs. socialism. To me, it seems you are teetering the line? And I'm sorry, but in another recent post you proclaim the criminal justice system is broken in this country, but you refuse to admit your part in the malfunction. In the US, a person, or party, is innocent until proven guilty, but in the court of public opinion, you tend to find people guilty for your innate desire to fight for the "little man," which is just as damaging as authority figures abusing their power and to be honest... Very condescending to the little man. Words matter and there is enough traffic on this site to influence people's opinions and you haphazardly, prematurely cast dispersions and guilt without any inside knowledge of the facts. You use hearsay and articles from biased 3rd parties and media outlets that have as much of an agenda as the direct parties involved. If the workers are happy with their unionization, then I am happy for the workers. If B&H can continue to serve their customers with low prices and superior customer service, then I am happy for both B&H and their customers. The End
