  1. Yeah these prices are absolutely ridiculous. I was adamantly against a new mount and felt it would have been in Canon’s and current EF lens owners best interest for Canon to make their FF mirrorless an EF Mount. But when the news of these new lenses leaked, I was tempted by the siren calls of a Canon f/2 zoom. Then when the sizes and weight of the lenses leaked, I became hesitant again but I figured they’d be released at competitive prices... $1500 for the 50mm, less than $2000 for the f/2 zoom, etc... but this is just outright offensive. The 35mm 1.8 seems okay and if it is anything like the EF 35mm f/2, it should be great. And the 24-105mm seems priced right but the draw of RF is the 28-70mm and 50mm 1.2, not a replica of the 24-105mm. With that being said, I assume there is some kind of AF motor inside the RF lenses that will accommodate Canon’s eventual upgrade of DPAF to QPAF, so it is a necessary evil. The real gem in this line up, for me, is the ND adapter. As a hobbyist, I’ll sometimes choose lenses based on filter thread diameter since I only have the one higher quality B+W vario ND in 58mm. I swear by my cheapo Bower Faders, but if I decide to get an EOS-R, or a future variant, the ND adapter will be a welcomed feature.
  2. Sorry, I’m feeling feisty today. But yeah I’m not gonna lie and say I love this camera, but I can’t say it doesn’t intrigue me a little and it does have a bunch of pluses. As far as 4K 60p... well that was never going to happen, so I can hardly consider that a flaw. The a6000 doesn’t have 120p in 1080p but yes I get your point, 120p would have been a good move, although I would rarely use it. People keep saying that Canon intentionally cripples their cameras but I’m not so sure it’s intentional. They have delivered DPAF into their cheapest consumer DSLRs. But more importantly, they’re here to make money and I don’t know if I buy the argument that Canon thinks they are hurting their Cinema line by not including features in their consumer line. Why would Canon not want to capitalize off of one of their biggest markets... hobbyist/enthusiasts? Most likely, they don’t have the processing speed to accommodate no crop in this body without putting a weird 4K time limit of 10 minutes on the recordings. Look at Fuji, even with a minor crop of S35mm, they still have a time limit.
  3. The problem is that the biggest critics were never going to buy one anyway. And if you look at the video specs, other than the 4K crop and no IBIS, the camera is pretty damn good and beats a lot of other camera’s offerings.
  4. Good lord... when did I say people shouldn’t debate or discuss cameras? Obviously, I have a shit ton of posts and that’s why I’m here. But I don’t waste my precious time, going into camera threads that I have no intention of ever buying just to bash it. These are the people I’m talking about. I also am not going to cry over a camera not having features I want/need like a little baby. It’s an effin camera. I’ve seen your work, you are a talented guy. I’m sure you could go out with a t2i or an a6000 and make great videos, so I wasn’t even talking about you. Methinks you doth a dork. “Let down...” it’s a goddamned camera for Christ’s sake. I was let down as soon as they introduced a new mount... I think it was a moronic move on Canon’s part. But as I just wrote to Wolf whatever... I wasn’t talking about you anyway. I’m not talking about disappointed people, I’m referring to the trolls that only appear during Canon releases, or the fanboys that have nothing better to do than poke around here. I know you’ve shot with a bunch of cameras and are brand agnostic, and I believe that this doesn’t suit your needs. It doesn’t suit mine 100% either but it doesn’t mean it is entire crap and that the camera doesn’t have a bunch of interesting features.
  5. Jesus Christ, you people are such nerds. There are so many cameras available on the market, just pick your poison and CREATE SOMETHING! This endless droning about this company or camera being better than that company or camera is pointless. You don’t like the 4K crop in the EOS-R, then shoot 1080p or buy a Z6 or an a7iii... it’s quite simple. I’m not thrilled with the crop but the camera has a lot of other perks that make it a contender for me as a hybrid. I look at any 4K video option, cropped or not, as icing on the cake. I’ll rarely shoot 4K and when I do, I’ll have more compact lens options with a thick codec. I’ll have the definitive best AF in the industry. And I’ll have great focus aids for my manual lenses. Any and all lenses I have that are native EF, or adapted to EF, will have a built in ND in the adapter. I’ll have internal Canon Log for 1080p and 4K and 10bit for external 4K. I’ll have an articulating screen and what seems to be excellent ergonomics. For me, this camera can be very useful. But so could the Z6. Or a GH5. Or an X-T3. So instead of spending your days bashing other brands to justify your purchases, why not go out into the world with your camera of choice and shoot something. I swear you’ll forget all about your problems with the EOS-R.
  6. To add upon my previous response on Resolve’s Highlight correction in the Raw Tab, here are some frames from ML Raw video I took with an old Minolta lens. When I processed the footage through the Footage App, this was the best I could bring down the highlights... Bringing the footage into Resolve using the Highlight correction, I was able to pull this out of it... That feature is magical. I don’t know if it would have helped with that footage if it was shot in Raw, but I think it may have.
  7. I’ve seen some videos from Pocket and Micro where one of those cheap Chinese IR Cit filters were used, and perhaps if any is needed, they will suffice. Or maybe Rawlite will produce a sensor specific version for the P4K if one is needed. I think it’s a combo of the SSC FD lens used... the coatings just aren’t as good as even FDn lenses. But if this was Raw, you’d be able to use that Highlight Check box in Resolve’s Raw Tab... that thing works miracles.
  8. I think it was a WB choice. I’ve been using cooler WB with my 5D3 and it really seems to help give that more “modern” look.
  9. Thanks. One of these days, after a few more short films, this camera looks like it could be a logical upgrade for me. If I can scrounge the money together I may get it sooner to practice color grading. Being an FCPX user, ProRes is always appealing.
  10. This one may be my favorite. The shot at 1:35 looks effin brilliant. Has there been any word about IR filtration on these videos? Ha, just realized that’s the shot they used for their thumbnail.
  11. ND adapter available in Feb... I was planning on getting some FD L lenses modified to EF, so I guess that gives me a little time.
  12. Yeah that 28-70mm sounds awesome... at $1500 or less... not at $3000. I’m sure there are plenty of reasons to change the mount... but for me, the best part of the RF Mount is the EF ND adapter.
  13. Not an apologist, I just don’t care. I like Canon color and Canon lenses. I shoot FF on my 5D3 and love it. But I also like S35mm and S16mm. I’m planning on buying an FZ2500 for a modern S16 look for a specific project I’m going to be working on this winter. I may buy an EOS-R next year as a hybrid, or I may not. But having to shoot with a crop won’t keep me from utilizing the strengths of the camera.
  14. Supposedly, ML wanted to crack the 1DC but Canon threatened them and then never released FW to the public... you had to send it in for updates, I think. And without a public firmware, ML cannot perform a firmware dump and port a camera. But Canon never sued them and ML has cracked plenty of cameras since then.
  15. It’s funny the last time me and the girlfriend watched a movie... she mentioned that she couldn’t really follow the story because they were shooting with a 45mm lens instead of a 28mm.
  16. According to BH, internal is 8bit 4:22 and there is a View assist LUT to monitor Canon Log as a graded image.
  17. Also, since it is mirrorless with a flange distance that matches M4/3, are there any cool PL cinema glass made for S35mm? Or any vintage Cine glass for S35mm?
  18. Thanks, that adapter sounds amazing. Do we know the price of the adapter yet? It would be great if Canon made an RF-FD ND adapter. With the manual focus aids, FD lenses could be killer on this camera.
  19. Cool, I can use 25mm c-mounts on it. Canon should just call it a S16 camera... marketing magic... lol.
  20. The digital IS + lens IS = hybrid/digital 5 axis stabilization. It worked great for static shots on the XC10 but the EOS-M version was crap. The IS from the 24-70mm f/4 has 4-5 stops, so it’s better than a lot of camera’s IBIS.
  21. The C-Log and focus features are definitely interesting. Do you know how the manual focus guide works? If this camera was less than 2 grand, I’d probably give it a go, but at $2300... I’m just not sure.
  22. I don’t care about 120p. I shoot narratives so there’s rarely a need for 120p. But if it had IBIS or no crop, I’d own one by Halloween. Of course if the video looks this good, I may get one... hmm...
  23. Yeah it isn’t bad but I only have a limited amount of money to spend this year and it will probably be better spent on lenses and audio gear. But I can see myself picking one of these up next summer.
  24. I actually haven’t been that impressed with the ProRea videos from the P4K. The Raw looks great though. Either way, the Canon looks good, really good especially for a Canon release video. I like the AF and Canon Log and 10bit color.
