  1. Antonis, Bob, Franz... all fantastic info. Really. I really appreciate your thoughts here, good points all around. Maybe it's time for me to pull back a little bit to consider the 'actual' work that is in front of me over the next year and the best way to approach it, and with what tools. More to follow, I'm sure. Thanks to everyone here such a great batch of people here!
  2. Ebrahim. You sir, are the voice of reason. I've come to really appreciate your insights and observations in the short time I've been active in this forum. For clarification the 1DC is 5500 euro and I would give them my 5DM2 to knock 1000 euro off the price. I absolutely agree with everything you've said here. 100%. There problem is that I have fallen in love with the 1DC image but want it to come from the C100's form factor. No easy solutions I'm afraid. What I'm constantly trying to figure out is what do I have to do get the 1DC to give some of the C100's functionality without it becoming too cumbersome? I've seen some of what others have done to their 1DC cameras, problem is that you just don't know how everything will go until you have it all in front of you and then use it for some time to understand if you can not only live with it, but enjoy it. Decisions decisions. And thanks again Ebrahim for your wonderful and humane insight into all things on this site
  3. Hello Folks, I was headed towards the C100 MKii but just got an offer on a mint 1DC for 4500 euro. This price is offset by 1000 euro for a 5DM2 I would part with in the exchange. Less than 1000 shutter actuations, no media cards, 1 battery. For the work I do, I would need at least 3-4 more batteries then I'd probably want two 512gb card$. Then some kind of monitor so I can focus during run and gun etc. Part of me wants to believe I won't need any monitor but I think I'd be fooling myself, especially in 4k. There are a great many reasons for and against but does anyone think this is a decent deal in light of new cameras that are already available or coming soon? Hard to know what to do? How-a-bout you?
  4. Hey Shield, I feel for you man. It seems nothing is easy. I'm a few years beyond you and facing a divorce because I've chosen to continue chasing my dreams with a camera and she is younger and wants kids. Who would have thought this thread would turn into a therapy session? Hang in there amigo
  5. Nice to see you still dropping in once in a while Andrew
  6. - I think they knew exactly what they were doing at this point. But they sure didn't when then they put video in the 5DM2 back in 2008. - Can be. But again, only God knows.
  7. - Going by the CanonRumors link, it sounds like they may indeed have some kind of 4k up their sleeve in a similar dslr (1D*) form factor. And if they do, I could easily see them crippling it in the same way they did with the 1DC so as not to affect the other C line cameras.

  9. I love this camera and would really love to pick one up, but with it's limited focusing/ sound capabilities/ large file size/ and with all that is about tho come down the pipe, I'm not so sure it's a wise move anymore. And this popped up yesterday: http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-1d-x-mark-ii-to-shoot-4k-video-cr2/ God knows.

    New Wireless Mic?

Hello Folks, I'm curious what kind of wireless mic units you like and why? I have a 7 year old Sennheiser g2 ew 100 and understand that there are new options available. Also, I've been running A Sennheiser 416 as a camera mount mic but sometimes find that it is too directional. Does anyone here use anything other than the Rode Video Mics? Would appreciate any advice. Tschuss.
  11. Why the fcuk did no one ever build a small unit that takes the signal from this camera's CF slot and encode it to a manageable format?
  12. Hi Aaron, quick question. Does the dual pixel auto focus work well on non L lenses? Does it work well on all lenses? Thanks.
  13. Solid Kubrickian. Good to hear that the engineers are thinking somewhat like the people who will use their cameras. Thank again for your continued help in this process
  14. Question? Suppose you wanted to remove the C100 Mkii top handle. Could you then mount a mic to the hot shoe, then input the mic to the camera using the 3.5mm mini jack, then control the input volume via menu controls. If so, is accessing the menu audio level controls fairly easy?
  15. Yeah, I've often wondered how many 1DC units are sitting in boxes in warehouses that will never see the light of day because a fairly simple firmware update was never made available. My feeling is that Canon made an ungodly amount of money in the dslr revolution that they can sit back for a decade and roll things out in very conservative manner. And to hear that they did not even fathom what building a stills camera that could shoot video would lead to is somewhat laughable. Somewhat.
  16. Fashion? For sure. What's next, fake eyelashes?
  17. I don't know, I mean for me the first thing that I have to ask is why is this Fstopper guy wearing lipstick? Never mind the camera stuff.
  18. Yep. I sort of had a bit of a break though moment today where I re-realized that story content is just so much more important that things like dynamic rage, 4k resolution etc. Having a camera that that let's you focus on content capture as a one man band in difficult circumstances is worth it's weight. I also love the idea of losing the side and top handles and throwing a pancake on it.
  19. Solid Aaron. Thank you for sharing. This echos what I've been hearing as well. How long have you had the camera?
  20. Sam, Shield3, Top marks! Really appreciate you both jumping in here with your decent work around solutions. My situation is that I'm spending years at a time running through through the streets of big dirty Asian megacities chasing characters. The city that I'm currently working in has more that 1 million people per square km and that means that I'm often jammed into ridiculous situations where I like to have the camera as small and unobtrusive as possible. If not, it attracts too much attention. I would probably just go with a bare bones 1DC but a year ago my eyes shifted and well... things are not so sharp right up in front anymore, especially in the smoke and fume, and I have to push the camera out a little further to get the screen sharper. Despite the added bulk, I'll take a closer look into the loupe and LCD option you've both suggested, thank you again for those. Without a doubt the image on the 1DC is superior to the C100 MKii, but the tools and functionality that the C100 offers blows away the 1DC. It's a serious choice I have in front on me, good problems to have but it doesn't make it any easier. Alas.
  21. Although BMD is seen and loved as some sort of underdog, I feel that they are in fact fooling around with people. For example, most pros will go with a camera that has a proven track record with a budget to support it. So what does Blackmagic do? They build a big heavy camera called the Ursa thinking that it can compete. And I guess on a good day it can. But why would a pro hire the Ursa when they have access to cameras that are the benchmark of the industry? Blackmagic's market is indie filmmakers like the folks here who want small powerful cameras at fair price. All they have to do is build something like the FS5 and give it decent functionality and a robust codec and they could own everything south of the $10k market - or most probably force the big guns to have to give us more bang. Maybe the Ursa Mini 4.6k will really hold together... I want to like it but to be honest it still looks too big for what I do. And what's with having to open the LCD panel to access the audio pots? Moreover, I certainly don't need all those SDI, timecode, BNC, etc connectors. I can understand that building a great camera must be a shitload of design and engineering work, but in watching a number of BDM interviews they always strike me like they don't seem to know what people want and I think that is a bit of an insult. I really hope this camera shine through for them though.
  22. Thanks. I absolutely agree. Just wondered how they compared to 5DM2, C100, etc. I didn't expect much.
  23. Very helpful Ebrahim. I've really come to appreciate your help on this forum Yes the loupe would come in handy in certain bright outdoor situations. Also, from what I understand, something like a SmallHD 502 with the Sidefinder unit could be attached directly to the camera's hot shoe. It look like Andrew has a very small unit in the photo, it's a Kinotechnik. Of course they are never going to give is the 'perfect camera' but I think that if I could rig this camera in a way that supports proper image monitoring and sound capture, this could be the last camera I buy for a long time. The image from this unit is really stellar. Does anyone know how good the audio pre-amps are on the 1DC?
  24. At 10:46 Phil checks focus using some kind of focus magnifier. So it does seem that there is some native help in the focus department.
