I am at Photokina. What would you like me to ask?
JurijTurnsek replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Ask Sony to invite you to their next unveiling event, since they obviously didn't want their product to be lost in all the announcements happening at Photokina. I would even go so far to say that their 24mm f1.4 press event was meant for something bigger (a new body), but they knew the buzz would get drowned out in all the L-mount speculation a week later. -
Panasonic announcing a full frame camera on Sept. 25???
JurijTurnsek replied to Trek of Joy's topic in Cameras
Since Sony is now facing some direct competition in the "basic" and "R" models from Nikon and Panasonic, they would be wise to go full-ham with their "S" outlier - ditch the mechanical shutter completely for a variable ND from FS5 and sprinkle some PDAF pixels on that global shutter silicone. -

No PDAF? Ouch. -
Panasonic announcing a full frame camera on Sept. 25???

Partnering with Sigma can only mean that affordable high quality glass is a given. It also means that Sigma (et al.) now has (have) 4 mirrorless FF mounts to design lenses for, so yay for everyone. Also, URSA is not an amazing stills body at the same time, so apples to oranges. Having two bodies is a good starting strategy, but with pricing above Z7 and a7RIII, Panasonic must out-feature them too. Would 4K60p be enough? -

One can dream of APS-C bodies in the future too, since the format is mentioned quite a bit in the press release. Just throwing that out there -
Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless talk hots up
JurijTurnsek replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Canikon had a great naming scheme of the number of digits indicating the price/feature bracket. With the M series that naming scheme went full retard, but is now slowly coalescing towards the same principle (but it took them many iterations to get there). Then they start the R line the same way. On the other hand, Nikon has a clear naming convention for their Z line, as does Sony and everyone else. Each model is properly named, differentiated and placed in the product line. It makes sense to assure the consumer that you are going to maintain different models for different uses and just upgrade them every few years - one for max resolution, one do-it-all basic model and a sports model etc. Now try to remember the confused M line models and try to extrapolate any sensible model strategy for the future. As a side note - Sony has been inconsistent in their APS-C (NEX) line naming as well - they have a much more consistent approach in their FF line. -
Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless talk hots up
JurijTurnsek replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Isn't anyone else annoyed that Canon keeps on naming their mirrorless models so inconsistently? It is very easy to distinguish the feature-level of their DLSRs, but with M and R, they just name it whatever they want. I think this just hints at how seriously they are taking this market. Is the higher resolution body be named RDr or R MAX or who the hell knows. I can't recall any other brand doing the same (except for Leica). -
With multiple cameras, it really pays to read in-depth reviews - most headline features only make it into the main sensor. Just goes to show how flexible the ILC concept really is. However, no ILC lens will ever offer a FF eqiv. 18-50mm zoom (like Nikon tried and failed to offer with their 1" line).

I would like to know how many features don't get copied/imitated, because of pride/reluctance to show that somebody else got it right before you. I mean, every R&D department has the funds to basically have every competing body/lens in stock for the team to fiddle with. Or are they happily living in a bubble where all they have to do it so evolve their current tech?

So, it is now on par with Google's Pixel phones? I agree that super-fast HDR is a way better approach than the additional monochrome sensor approach that Huawei is pushing (I have seen no real benefit from that approach and I check the IQ of each new Huawei phone). With super-fast bracketing you can get either HDR in most static shots and multiple frame noise reduction in low-light. I am disappointed that the MAX model does not have three camera modules (a super wide angle is missing) and going by the leaks of the upcoming V40 it will be the first to have all three focal lengths, but behind smaller sensors (and a feeble 3300mah battery). Huawei is supposedly sticking to the same sensor configuration of the P20 for the new Mate series, which is unfortunate. Overprocessing galore. So I have high hopes for the S10, which is rumored to some with three camera modules and they typically use larger sensors than LG, hence the class-leading IQ. If only they could add some sort of super-fast HDR (it does multi-shot in S8 and S9, but the results are not as impressive as the Pixels). If only Samsung could ditch the unnecessary curved screens - rumors point to a basic S10 with a flat screen, but only two camera modules.

Is this true? Sounds like a big fail ... I would think Andrew would have a field day with this one? -
They could always sell you some upgraded eyeballs after the fact. It is not technology's fault our bodies can't keep up.

Sony a7SIII - Full Frame 4K 60fps 10bit with Flip Out Screen
JurijTurnsek replied to Dave Maze's topic in Cameras
The big news here would be that the a7S series is so immensely popular Sony is willing to produce a completely new body design for this body. Then it would even make sense that the new body could handle 4K60p. -

I'm a firm APS-C believer, FF is overkill for most people IMO. -

That Nikon 2.8 zoom will have 24mm. Big difference. Also, you need to consider the T value of the f2.0 zoom. And IBIS. Also, freaking f2.8 DOF on FF is already damn shallow, just improve the high ISO performance Canon, sheesh. -
You did not miss anything. If you were a Sony user, however, you could move up-market and get built in ND filters for you E-mount glass. RF-mount glass is stuck in "positive future predictions for a company famous for crippling products".

What a substantial upgrade! Kudos to Fuji - the new sensor makes me hopeful for the new Sony APS-C flagship. Overall there isn't much to improve on the XT line and the customization options are ridicules.

You are preaching to the wrong crowd. A hybrid shooter is all about democratizing the video/photo field - make it cheap to achieve professional results if you are willing to learn how and put in the work. After you pay your dues with a DSLR/mirrorless, you move on to big, professional gear (you probably don't make your first commercial for a friends business using a Canon C200). And then there is the casual crowd, like myself - we deserve to be able to preserve our memories in the best kind of quality available and that is no-crop 4K in 2018.

Don't EF-S lenses protrude to far into the mount and could damage the slide-in ND filter?

Kudos to Canon for simulating the crop factor even on YouTube. That's honest marketing!
