I would define Canon-itis as the now obsolete product cycle of updating a flagship (FF and APS-C) body once every 4-5 years and spending the rest of the cycle slowly trickling down its features to lower-priced models. In short - claiming innovation while pushing the same feature down in price for 4-5 years. I feel like they should do what Sony does and just push down the price of older models still on the market, but upgrade this approach with firmware updates.

Another boost for DJI! Maybe this is why they delayed the OSMO successor.

Sony FS5 Mark II rumored for NAB 2017
JurijTurnsek replied to photographer-at-large's topic in Cameras
A FS3 (if created) should be modular enough to be stripped down completely for drone use. Something like Sony QX1, but with proper features and a heatsink. -

Such a mystery that dedicated cine glass from Fuji gets no love in a separate thread, but has to live inside a generic thread on a cine forum is very confusing ... whereas countless posts are dedicated to determining if a certain unreleased photo lens will live up to demands of videography.
-
A valid observation, but after photo/videographers upgrade their entry level bodies they go bargain hunting online or on used gear portals instead of walking into a Harvey Norman because they cannot live with their old gear for a few days more. So, physical presence in (non-specialized) stores is nothing to base you market assumptions on.

I guess a WD My Cloud could be the cheapest and easiest solution in the long-run (if you have decent upload speeds and need to share with just a few people). One time cost, but I am not sure if there are any file size limits in the provided software.

When I compare RX100 mkI to mkV on the dpreview tool, is see no real IQ progress made in 5 years. Reviews hinted at better shadow lifting for mkIV and 4K was possible with the last year's sensors anyway. With the know-how from Nikon 1 series, I find it baffling how Nikon was unable to produce a AF speed monster with the DL series. I don't know about the image processing of the 1 series, but in any case, they have years of experience with this sensor size.

Sony Smartphone sensor to support 4k60p and 1/120s readout
JurijTurnsek replied to hoodlum's topic in Cameras
Looks like the 1" sensor from the RX line scaled down to smartphone size. Now for the APS-C and FF size ... I guess financially they just had to do it for the mass market first. -
You guys are forgetting that no waterproof accessories are included with the Yi cam, whereas GoPro supplies then in every package - the price difference isn't that dramatic. Also you can discuss IS vs gimbals forever, but in the end, every user has his own needs and the market gives options for both.

Priced at $299

60p bit rate is not 2x the 30p bit rate. Google for more.

Here it is in all of its glory (no price yet, unfortunately): https://www.yitechnology.com/actioncamera/index/id/11

Well, how many of them will abandon Apple? 0.1%, if that. On the other side of the spectrum, the silly innovations will maybe bring in a slew of yet non-converted latte-sippers.

PROs should get over themselves. No one hates you, but you are a small market. Most Macbook users use them for menial office work. As a PRO, you should be able to shop around, not just cry when your brand goes in the other direction.

Well, yeah. Amazon is known for its extremely small profit margins and overworked employees (in warehouses at least), so it is reasonable to believe the finances of owning DP are being carefully monitored.

The gist of it being that if we want a free review site, we can either click on their ads a lot or use their affiliate links to guy gear or except some sponsored content. Now, even if you believe that their findings are susceptible to manufacturer influence, you can always compare lab tests and examples and videos and review the camera by your own standards (so keeping the site alive and free is in everyone's interest).
-
Dpreview will always be a very good site for camera research, since most of their ISO, DR etc, claims are supported with a few image examples. Anyone can decide if the examples support their claims. They even have tracking AF videos, so you don't have to believe what they write and check it out yourselves. Is there any other site offering standardized ISO samples for most cameras with a handy comparison tool? Take their words with a grain of salt (and compare them to other reviews) and you are good to go. Likewise, it would be insane to trust Andrew as your only source info when researching a camera.

I'm just wondering why the numerous very specific Sony articles are not marked as sponsored (they offer almost no real critique, just praise).

Are bridge cameras the perfect solution for run & gun ?
JurijTurnsek replied to kidzrevil's topic in Cameras
So, Sony has a better lens, but Panasonic still has loads going for it. Hopefully, Sony can copy at least some of it for their next release. -
Sony A6500 movie and photo samples are coming in
JurijTurnsek replied to Cubanito's topic in Cameras
A6500 will record longer, but it will give you sever burns if you try to hold it. Not much of an improvement here. And IBIS does not need to be better that their FF IBIS - but it had to be developed for the smaller sensor size. It probably wasn't a trivial task, hence the costly R&D. Know the limitations and work with them. You suffered Canon's shortcomings for years and now have to live with Sony's. No perfect camera, still.
