Kudos to Apple for making it 12mpx since a 16:9 crop makes it 8mpx. No downsampling reduces the load on the CPU and the heat can be managed more easily. 4K on a mobile phone sensor means that the downscaled 1080p will be more than decent, so rejoice! Stop the 4K hate.

Did Sony ever publish sensor development so far in advance? Is this just a PR stunt by Canon to make is seem that the future is bright? Since a new sensor technology takes so long to develop, surely there are all sorts of sensor in development in other company's labs (but they keep it under wraps, so that their competitors don't get too much insight. And I always want more megapixels, since more detail is always welcome, but please keep expanding high iso capabilities as well (not like 5DS).

NX1 is a huge body and NX500 heavily crops the image since the CPU cannot handle all those mpx. They did not find the magic solution, but they did manage to harness the more CPU heavy h265. You should also note that Samsung makes their own CPUs and that it took them 3 years to finally be able to do it (4K).

It's quite simply really - A7RII has to deal with a lot more pixels for processing than the pure 4K (8mpx) A7SII. This means video recording is a lot less CPU intensive.

So many Sony fans, but still such a lack of understanding of their mirrorless bodies ... 1. Anyone who ever has issues with overheating on a Sony NEX body was first advised to keep the LCD pulled out (shame on you testers for not trying that). Some have even attached a small heatsink on the backside to help the heat dissipate. There are many more tips if you just google them, but the gist of it all is the CPU is overheating - an external recorder can go on forever. 2. You all compare the A7 line with DSLR sized-bodies - even GH4, NX1 etc. are all insanely big bodies in comparison to the sensor size and the laws of thermodynamics cannot be ignored. On one hand you applaud it for it's small size, then you forget the obvious drawbacks. And the DSLRs you are comparing it to can't even go above line-skipped 1080p. 3. Get informed and use the body according to what it is capable of. A7RII in not a video-centric A7 body - wait for the A7SII or do great stills and superb video with this one.

So no one ever got a Canon body to overheat? I used a Canon 7D for filming very short clips with quite some idle time in between and was getting the overheat icon. It didn't shutdown, but the clips were less than 10 seconds in length. Beck to what really matters - wouldn't it be pretty easy for a 3rd party manufacturer to create a sort of a battery grip from which copper heatsinks would extend the LCD and that would be connected to some sort of a cooing solution (a fan, if nothing better is doable) in the battery grip.

Thanks for the link. I am using Kdenlive and I only miss a more sophisticated clip speed feature - variable speed, interpolating etc. Does Shortcut have it? Also, I need proxy clips, since my current setup struggles with AVCHD files (don't laugh) that have effects applied.

Sony has almost hit rock bottom (a few years ago) and they bounced back with innovative products. Many big companies need to go through this and this is great for the consumer, so why should Canon be immune to this? Even if their profits tank completely, that can only mean that they will bring their most advanced prototypes to the market and that would be great. In a capitalistic status quo the strategy is to milk every incremental generation release to the max - it's not like they don't have more advanced tech in their R&D lab.

If anyone could do a comparison with Panasonic FZ100 that would be very much appreciated. The price difference right now is huge and it is likely to remain pretty substantial for the foreseeable future. If slo-mo is not something you're after, FZ1000 still looks like a best-buy.

^^ Overheating occurs when filming long clips without any cool-down time. Short clips allow for much heat dissipation.

I've been using Kubuntu for 10 years now and do photo and video work on a very amateur basis. Video editing: Kdenlive Photo library: Digikam RAW converter: Rawtherapee, darktable Graphics: GIMP Vector graphics: Inkscape Audio: Audacity I've been employed as a SW developer for the last 2.5 years and work on a Windows machine and have considered going back to Windows at home, but there simply isn't any good free alternative for Kdenlive (other listed SW can be used on Win also) so I won't. Ultimately, complete control over OS is a very valuable thing. Just be careful when upgrading to newer versions, since QA testing resources are limited and some older features can get broken (don't do it before an important project, haha).

Since 42mpx means gives you a 8K 16:9 mode, I wonder if Sony will let this sensor design improve and trickle down to the a7s series of the future (not immediate future) when the processing power will catch up with 8K requirements or even before that to do full sensor read-out with downsampling to 4K and 8K external. I wonder what resolution Sony would then put into their a7r series.

Wouldn't it be insanely easy to create a dummy (or even a fully electronic) adapter for the Sony QX series to mimic this one? The handling looks like it is quite intuitive, but the price is way too high.

Once again I will say that a7s II will have 4K60p to differentiate it from a7r II. Keep the 12mpx and leave the super 35 crop 4K to a7r II and FS7 (can't have it all). This would be in line with Sony's strategy to bring something completely innovative to the market every 6 months.

At this point I am 99% convinced the a7s will do 4K at 60fps. Hear me out. The sensor will be kept at 12mpx, since 8K is still some years off and doing 5K, 6K, 7K is just a middle-step that can benefit software panning or image stabilisation. If they create a 12mpx BSI sensor, the high ISO is going to improve some (don't know by how much) and the data throughput is going to be crazy fast. The Bionz processor can now handle 4K downsampling, so at a full pixel readout with no downsampling, 4K60p should be doable in the bigger body with IBIS (heat dissipation and all). Now the biggest challenge in this whole configuration would be the speed of the memory card ... wouls a top of the line SD card be capable of recording so much data? I am also wondering if they are going to reuse the IBIS body again or will they try to innovate with some video-centric ergonomic features.

I prefer to take it as if he has been given a pre-production camera and he is busy preparing a first impressions review under a NDA. Can't believe he couldn't take the time to hype up Pana G7 or Arri's price drop. Those were both big news and I was sure he would post some commentary on the subject.
