Our friends at slashcam have posted these news for the highest end rental market, same sensor size as Alexa 65, one stop better dynamic range of 15 stops, one stop more sensitive with 6400 ISO being as clean as 3200 ISO on the original 65. Also, the weight has been reduced to one third of the Alexa 65 with 3.3 kg compared to 10+ kg. All in the shell of an Alwxa 35 Mini. But read for yourself. Here is the article in English, also in numbers, with a size comparison to the large format baby from Blackmagic, which comes at 30.000, whereas the new Alexa is rental only. https://www.slashcam.com/news/single/ARRI-ALEXA-265---65mm-film-production-now-more-com-18982.html

My Lumix G6 had 12bit Raw with mechanical shutter but only 10bit in E shutter mode afaik. S9 without mechanical shutter and EVF is such a missed opportunity!
-
Also the hdmi being mini. Or wasn't it even micro? Coff, coff:)

If you talk purely about video I would be intrigued by a used C70 for 3K. The image is no contest in its RAW flavours, being on og Alexa level, though noise is less film like under extreme conditions in comparison. I paraphrase out of an article from German test site slashcam. Besides a fantastiv image it provides great usuability, regarding battery life, NDs and so on, all in a potrable package. As a hybrid I would find the Z6III very tempting. For video I like the image the most from what I've seen on the web. Specs vs price ratio it's a champ imho. Next would be a used S1H, with some of best thick and slim codecs I've seen. Great image pipeline, superb build and a joy to use. I got the S1H and the S1, both are built of equal high quality, the S1H still feels looks and operates so much nicer for me. It would be endgame camera for me with less rolling shutter plus focus punsh-in while recording. The image provides beautiful quality for post work though taking a bit more work to get the most out of it if imo. Shout for A7IV, especially if battery is as good as in the A73. I've seen stellar stuff shot by a buddy of mine. Dynamic range, color are top notch. Worse rolling shutter than a S1/H,5/II though? R6II sounds interesting but I don't know much else besides hearsay. So, of the newer cameras my choice would be to test out a Z6III.:)

Liberals and conservatives, yeah just two kinds of humanbeings.;) Liberal cinema, conservative, both sounds dull as a freaking polit talkshow with all these dull broadcasters and podcasters with their framing and then their framing about framing. Talent? I haven't read from Reed Morano in a long time. Her direction of the first three episodes of Handmaids Tale were the best of the whole thing. She did these as a Dop turned director and it has shown in the visual power. Any episodes later had a tough time to keep up with that level of quality. Quiet a few did a good overall job, possibly sticking to the visual concept of the Moreno episodes in an attempt to use it as a blueprint. A whole bunch of the last two seasons was mediocore and in that with even nervewreckingly annoying parts and unappealing talking heads galore. So where is Reed Morano? She did three exceptionally outstanding episodes of cinema for that show. This industry doesn't really do as much for diversity as it does against it. In Germany filmsets have been, until recently, spaces of labor exploitation and psychological abuse. Middle and upper class kids taking the trophies. But they are scared too not to get their project financed. I had the great pleasure of talking to Oliver Stapleton for a few minutes at Camerimage 2019, the edition before Corona. He told me that filmschools in Brittania are much rather accessible for wealthy kids. He found that to be not ideal. He was frank to point out his disappointment with a pretty desasterous shortfilm, infront of an audience, which also agreed on his assertions. Oliver Stapleton and any of the viewers had respect for the cinematography and technical prowess and they were showing acknowledgement. But story, acting, direction of acting, dialogue, and tone aka mood were just disappointing. I have seen another highly mediocore mid length film at that very same Camerimage, which also had a screening at a pretty prestigous German filmfest, just like the film I mentioned above. Both shorts were from technical showcases. Then I've seen two dull shorts from another famous German filmschool, which both made it to that same German prestigeous festival. The DoPs did good pro work in all these films, but story, acting, dramaturgy, mood were all dubious. Camerawork and tech aspects were pro level. So camerimage has shown some lacklaster student films. Btw Berlinale has too. I am not competent to say by any means if it is the festivals fault as a lot of good stuff is running there too. They can only choose from the films which are sent to them.

Looking great. Now some pictures in motion, please:) And a tutorial:) @Cosimo

Panasonic, if they bring out a S9II with mechanical shutter, evf and hotshoe plus full hdmi for 1499, a GXX with a GH5II inside for 849, a S2H with FF 60p and internal ND for 2999, a GM6 with 10bit 150mbit 4k up to 30p and 100mbit HD up to 60p for 799. The latter would be a beautiful bonus, though a very beautiful one indeed.

The Topaz one should be worldwide like other software goodies and workshop offerings as well. Some Laowa treats would be sweet or some tasty smallrig deals. Keep em coming.:)

@kye I didn't recognize a drop in resolution caused by the rawlite filter. I like the highlight rolloff better on the pocket. It could be something imaginary, but in certain situations the og pocket seems to look better. I don't know if it's due to the rawlite filter on the micro. I haven't tested the micro without it. I also got a second micro with the original filter but I haven't used it yet. @mercer You are right, I was wrong:) Some Cmounts cover S35 from 35mm on. I think the Fujinon does. My Tevidon 35mm does. I love the Tevidon 10mm on S16. It's especially beautiful close to midrange.

Let us know about overheating and how that micro hdmi works out for you, if you go for the XM5. @Ninpo33 Sensor, codecs, processing and image should be like the XS 20. A used S1 could be a great alternative if you don't mind the size. Great battery life, top image quality and exellent internal codecs, built like a tank, full size hdmi for braw and prores raw recording.
-
I got the Fuji variante of the 12.5 F1.4 because of your recommendation. @mercer Had so much fun with it. I've been using my og pocket a good deal this summer. Used it with a 25mm Zeiss Cmount lens. Great character lens and fun focal length, fiddely focussing ring due to being so small and gnarly. Did you also sell your Sigma FP? That one should be a good home for your Cmount lenses. 3x crop does the job. What do you keep? I also need to let some of my stuff go. Not sure about the micro yet. What kind is the monitor hinge in the set which you sold to kye? Maybe i need to get one myself for my Ikan and enjoy the ergonomy a bit more.

I had posted this little gem in another thread. So here it is where it belongs.:) I just love what people are getting out of this camera. Btw one youtuber has discovered that the sensor was made by Fuji! Who is still using or has begun to use that beautiful Cinealta F3? I got one in great shape but have not come around using it. So a "get off your ass and use your vintage camera-challenge" would be awesome! Are you in? @IronFilm 🙂 Anyway, the clip:
-
Any Cinealta F3 goodness lately? @IronFilm I bought mine 3 years ago during Corona but have only filmed out of my window once. Maybe I should change that and put my Tokina 28-70 on for a joyride. If I only would!:)
-
Oh no, why are you selling it? On the other hand it's so cool that you sold your other set to kye. @mercer Btw, I find the results from my Bmpcc even nicer than what I got out of my Micro with the rawlite oplf-ircut filter. @bjohn Thank you for sharing. The pink led is really putting the micro to the test. No mercy.:)
-
But S5 and S1 have they same processing and image, right? @Beritar Doesn't the og S5 also sport open gate? Have you encountered pinkish blotches/posterization on evenly lit skin in Vlog 10bit 422 150mbit? It occured to me when filming skin with heavy makeup. HLG in that mode seemed without it. I always loved the GH5 in HLG in 10bit HD All-Intra btw. Beautiful image.

FUJIFILM GFX100 ii 5.8k meets Stilgar from Dune at dunes of Maspalomas

720mbit for 6k 16:9 sounds reasonable, that's h264 All-Intra then? Macroblocks is always a yikes. But desert surfaces also provide very homgenous surfaces, a challenge for many codecs under heavy grading. I have not encounterd any on S1, S1H at 4K 10bit 150mbit but and that is a big one I have encounterd blotchy posterization on redish skin in Vlog. So a paid beauty shot would make me test again. HLG in 10bit 422 seemed more robust for even skintones on a few occations. I find it pretty daring to take a camera to the desert, especially a package like yours. So, great work I must say again for various reasons of which I've mentioned some in my post above. I would love to see your skills and your Fuji gems on faces and human subjects! Don't bother for me with an extra upload, maybe for others. I don't have a machine for 6K h264 at the moment. But thank you very much for offering. -

Bump. I'm seconding my compliments and questions.:) @fish_supreme -
I didn't know about this issue with the update. Even moreso, the original S5 seems a very compelling choice as a personal camera.@Attila Bakos Not even to speak about used market prices. S5D, or whatever the relaunched original S5 is called, should have been updated with a full Hdmi to make it suitable for hasslefree wireless video monitoring and being the perfect entry into A Cam territory for a variety of film and video work. Micro Hdmi on an otherwise nearly perfect Dslm is still a heartbreaker. S1 is too big. S1H, though just as big, feels like a marvel and kinda worth the weight. Still, og S5 with full hdmi, so compelling to think of.

Is Panasonic rethinking high-end full frame mirrorless line-up?
PannySVHS replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Looks like full frame HD 25p is exellent on the S9, whereas on the S1H on has to choose Apsc for that, like also tested by that polish website and youtube channel, but four years ago.:) How is battery life on the S9? Any tests regarding overheating? I guess I could check myself but I'm asking in case if someone knows already.:) -
From what i saw on the web Z6iii,8,9 have beautiful color, texture and motion in Z Raw, best in their classes except from the Canon C70. Interested to see some results, which people are able to achieve with the new curve.
-
I agree on that. That is an essential notion and should not be in question. Commenting and deleting, yes. But in no way replacing content of someone under their name. The former is sometimes an editors necessary instrument. The latter is a nono, a pandoras box. More original og posts in the first place and less ad spamming would be a blessing though.
-
But then I read about the overheating issues, in cases shutting off after 10min of filming. I think a few people here have a XS20. So maybe they can chim in. Our friend and Eoshd contributor has reported in depth about the lacking chroma detail in the red channel. @Attila Bakos A used Lumix S5 looks more attractive to me, though bigger, but small for what it does, which is great image quality due to its exellent digital pipeline, reliable performance without overheating, 10bit 4k60 apsc, FF open gate, great size and ergo over all. Ibis on the Fuji has been reported as lacking compared to Panny.

Great stuff! Where did you film this? How did you go and get along with the sand close to your lens and camera? I love the strong layers and it containing people in super wides. The graphical intensity feels natural instead of being a mannerism, still it is very well composed and edited. What's your take on colour, codec and "thickness" for color grading compared to other 10bit hybrids or even more specialized movie cameras? -
Inherent Vice (Paul Thomas Anderson) cinematography
PannySVHS replied to Tim Sewell's topic in Cameras
If this was shot with a hybrid cam, people would rather comment. But like that, nah.:) But yeah, awesome cinematography. Yesterday I watched "Don't come knocking", very stylized, almost too crafty and obvious camera, with some clumsy acting and cast but as a whole a satisfying experience and a day later after watching, I must say, a masterful film. With hybrid camera test videos I am getting annoyed by the supposely pretty girlfriends doing supposely cinematically indystyle things with senseless pushins and gimbalibis galore and smeary netflix lighting. I love a lot of the test videos with big fat "vintage" cameras. Maybe that's because some of the people who are foolish enough to bust their backs with these heavy oldtimers, they might be cinematographers or people who aspire cinematography with great passion and sincerity. Yeah, discussing cinematography beyond youtube shills is fun. I remember when Tony Zhou was all I cared for, of all the cinematography and cinema related channels. On of the very greatest video essayists and a legendary contributor. Let me check if he did an essay on PTA. Thank you for sharing and putting it on the map again for me. Definately a great film. @Tim Sewell
