Panasonic S1 V-LOG -- New image quality king of the hill
PannySVHS replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It´s easy to second that. Best bang for buck regarding image quality. Would love to try out a Sigma FP due to its form factor but S1 is a technical marvel. Yesterday I visited a friend of mine. He used to work in a hotel in Berlin, which has been sold to investors so they can turn it into an office building. He has been working there for ten years. The hotel received financial aid from the state because of Covid and was able to maintain a small profit. Despite that it was sold and with it all labor of love and the stories and memories. So we roamed the rooms and floors and exiting sights. I filmed with a bargain zoom lens, which I bought for around ten EU I think, a Unitor 35 to 70, very soft when wide open in bright sunlight conditions and at longer distances. Still love that lens for its built and character. Shot in VLOG 10bit 25p with high shutter speeds. So here it goes, my lil poem, "Hotel Farewell", filmed with my S1 yesterday. Hope you enjoy. cheers -

Awesome videos, thanks for sharing @John Matthews and @kye. Would just love it to not becoming bloated and stay nice and tight the way it is right now. -
@austinchimp I think, the GH1 has a beautiful colour palette. Best 709 of the Lumix cams imho. Would have loved a technical image quality of the GH3 or 4 combined with the colour of the GH1. Some gruesome grading out there for sure.:) GH1 footage looks effortless in the colour department. GX85 has some nifty colours up its sleeve. I always loved the graded image of the G6 and the G7. GX85 can be nice even without grading. The former two not so much. Now, S1 is another league of course. One of the best looking cams out there.

seaweed and a tiny, stable minitripod would be ultimate naughtyness and viewing pleasure. 🙂 Seriously, do the tripod thing. Some of the shots would have been elevated for great to magnificient! Even moreso with the montage, which is very tight. Would love to see some c- or d-mount magic with your BMMCC. One side note, I have a couple Zeiss Tevidon laying around, many single ones and one complete as brand new set, except the 100mm and the 18-90 zoom. But have not brought myselt to order that darn Tevidon to C-mount adapter. So, always grateful to see what lens projects you guys got going on.:) cheers

@kye Two years or so back we had a thread with classy classic 8bit stuff. We were discussing how gh1,2,3 and even 4 shooters did much better than gh5 fans on vimeo. How they were rather artisitc than unimaginative techconsumers and advocats of putting anything dull in slow motion. Here is a repost of a video I posted back then, if I remember correctly. If not, anyway, one of my favorite GH1 clips on vimeo. Your example above is a splendid demonstration of craft and love for the image, showing a convincing image for sure.

Awesome, but psst.:)

@kye Masterpiece. It would have been worth to use a tripod to compliment your beautiful framing and montage. Love the shotdesign and realization and the juxtaposition of images and montage in its entity. cheers

You have a better battery than I do.:) Mine lasts rather 2h. Nothing close to a GH4 or even GH5.

I am surprised that S1/H,5 footage on youtube does not do the camera justice. The colour out of this cam is awesome. Unfortunately I have not shot much with it since last summer. S1 is best bang for the buck by far in my opinion.

Looks very good. Lush colors in the cinematography, framing, acting and editing, all very appealing. Great job!

Thank you, Tim! I still love the HD image from the G6, even more the colours I got out of it. If it only had a higher bitrate like 50mbit for 24/25/30p and 100mbit for 50p. GH3 or GH4 would be a great vintage 8bit buy I guess in that regard. @Tim Sewell cheers

Love it. Awesome poetic image, Kye! Thanks for posting. My favorite was the Lumix G6 with a Tokina 25-50mm F4 or the awesome Fujinon 12.5mm 1.7, which was recommended to me by our friend mercer. Using it on the G6 in 2x Digizoom or on the GX85 in 4K with its crop gives me an extremely satisfying personal image!

Hey kids, my perfect camera would have been a Lumix G6 with a 100mbit codec. I love the HD coming from it. Once graded, it really looks organic to me. Just the shadows become super blocky in low light due to the light codec. Maybe I could get a GH4 for cheap and treat it like my super G6.:) My Lumix S1 is an image powerhouse. But sometimes I dont feel it challenging me but giving away a great image to easily. The G6 always gave me great pleasure in giving me an image I had to work for hard. My dearest camera still. I shot this years ago but still remember the profile settings. Here it goes, natural with contrast 0, sharpness, noise and colour at -2. Graded the heck out of it with crazy curves. Lens was the cheap and awesome Canon 28mm 2.8 and a focal reducer.

Dear friends, Andrews expertise, Titos enzyclopedia and Seb Farges wealth of information, all three are gulity of putting me into the situation, many others have faced. Being lured into the pleasures and madness of anamorphic adapters. So, @Andrew Reid, @Tito Ferradans, @Seb Farges and all you other kewl cats, I appreciate your take on this. I was fascinated by the elegance of a Baby Hypergonar from Sebs video and I figured, the best mix for me would be small size, an admireable image with plenty oddities though of course with hopefully acceptable shortcomings in image quality. Then some time ago I read about the Icsomorphot 8 1.5 on Eoshd. For months I tried to find one for a small amount of money:) but it never got any less than 350EU. Then, I came across some information about an Iscomorphot 16 2x with nice attributes regarding size and image. Point is, I bought an Iscomorphot 16mm 2x which is different than the 16 without the "mm", which stands for Millimeter, the European metric. Did I buy some useless piece of optics? What is your take on it? Oh, and it has some fungus it seems.. Here are the pictures from the seller I bought it from.

Always a good feeling. "Show me the money" to quote the great Cuba Gooding Jr. in his Oscar winning role. :)

Got the perfect cams for my use, FS700, beautiful Cinealta!:) F3, Pocket Varicam Lumix S1. Total awesomeness. Happy as a resurrector of filmmaking can be (referring to the "who will kill filmmaking first"-thread:) Now, Panny, roll out that awesome update for the S1!
-
German TV already killed filmmaking twenty years ago. :)
-
Would love some external BRAW with the S1 for the perfect Davinci workflow! Any rumours when the update is to be expected?

Looking great! @Pascal Deshayes Is it the internal codec? From a test I must say its internal codec gives a C300MKI a good run for its money with better dynamic range and latitude in SLOG. Second shot from top is pure cinema! Show us some magic in motion, please! What lenses did you use? Need to get a FZ to FD adapter! This week my Blackmagic Video assist arrives from the bay, 5inch powerhouse giving me 10bit 422 60p with my F3! It even comes with smallrig cage and mini sdi to sdi cables. Cannot wait to test all the F3 awesomeness! This is by far my favorite thread at the moment. Whenever someones is posting here my heart beats from exitement.:) cheers

150 Mbps Long-GOP 10bit, my friend! 🙂 Once you shot the S1/S5 in Vlog, you will feel shocked, how good it is. The 10bit Long-GOP is an exellent codec. Scary, how good it is! Would be fun to be able to test it on a real cinema size screen, sometthing like 30 feet wide. But the 10bit 200Mpbs HD on the GH5 is beautiful, the 100Mpbs also.
