Panasonic GH5 Review and exclusive first look at Version 2.0 firmware
PannySVHS replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I shot a short this weekend with it in 8bit HD, knowing with its pixel perfect HD and 100Mbit it will a massive bump in gradeability compared to the already awesome HD image and codec in the G6, G7 and G85, which was running somewhat around 28Mbitpersecond. 8bit Rec709 in Natural contrast at 0, noise+sharpness at -5, looks fantastic on the GH5, if graded with care. A 200mbit 10bit Intra HD Codec with Vlog and perfect HD is already heaven to me. I think I will indeed buy this true cinema camera. GH5 is massive! -
Hey Matt, yeah that 28 f2.8 keeps surprising me. I always loved the look of it. I should do a test against my 20mm 1.7 with it. Hmm, gonna do it right now. Wait a minute:) Test result: the FD with a focal reducer is higher resolving in the centre at F2.8 than the 20mm at F2.0.

Good idea about making another one. But for this one I had a crew working just for meals and having an awesome time with one another.. The next thing would have to be a one man band again. I don´t know if I know that many people who enjoy doing sound for free:) Maybe GH5 cannot be in the challenge. Its image quality already in HD 420 is too tremendeous, C100 good. Okay, back to lens talk. Canon FD 100mm SSC F2.8. Awesome lens, compact, hefty enough in hand, massive image quality wide open. On S35 it´s a winner. Still looking for that awesome ultra wide for FD. Maybe the Tokina 17mm 3.5 is Canon FD good, @Matt Kieley?

Got a Lumix G7, hardly ever used it, because body feels kinda shallow. Funny that a G6 feels so much more satisfying in hand. Still got my G6. Fun camera, never disappointed. I feel I can trust it. Second nature to me now. Nice battery life, with two original and a cheap battery. GX85 is lovely, kinda to pretty to shoot with it. Great image quality and nice but tricky IBIS. Battery life in 4K is so lala. HD is not satisfying enough, almost good enough but really not. Easy to grade. Shot with a GH5 this weekend. Fantastic cam. HD quality is fantastic. Gradeablility in 8bit 420 is very good already, I´d say Canon C100 II good. The battle for best 8bit 420 would be hard to estimate a winner for.

@IronFilm, Hey man, aren´t you from New Zealand? Asking, because my mates and me met a cool director from NZ. He has a beard just like you. Are you in Berln right now?:) You and I talked before with eachother on here, about that kewl Sony F3. So don´t get scared by my Toshiro Mifune back and neck when I am asking you this question:) Cineama5D, I used to get them mixed up with EOSHD because of the Canon reference. But I was always looking for EOSHD, of course. It must have been about six years ago. So I should be forgiven, even more when only just looking for that cool EOSHD articles:) First provocation, than honey spilling. What a low life move, I should go to Cinema5D and apologize:)

Hey Glenn, yeah, rail free follow focus should give me some nice tactile feel. They come with reverse option for Nikon? The SLR Magic and my FDs drove me a bit nuts this weekend when filming and focusing different directions:) Btw Glenn, It´s my shortfilm I shot this weekend with a rented GH5 instead of my poor GX, which is a little pity, because it would have been so cool to have a legit shortfilm done with the GX85! But battery life and positon of batterydoor with card slots was not adequate. So that shortfilm might be allowed for our 8bit shortfilm challenge, since I shot in classy, sassy glorious 8bit 420? Or maybe not, because its 8bit 420 on roids:)

Some wedding stuff is well thought out. Some of them have a nice mix and balance of film grammar and are not only nicely laid out but also well executed. Of course one can find it to be Kitsch, because it has to be, just like dating movies. Well done eye candy. But too much candy starts to become a bad thing in the stomach. So you guys, stop watching strangers´ wedding videos. You are takin the bandwidth so I cannot watch them before I go to bed and dream. Brides will always look glam, which is a good as long as they don´t start to look alike and get mixed up I still don´t like the threads name. Deezid does great work and color work with the Lumix cams, so of course he can make it cinematic. Nobody questioned this. The GH5 in the right hands can be a cinema camera more than anything in the price range up to 6000 USD. LS300 does not have the IBIS nor the nice EVF and Display, nor 10bit.

Really lookin forward to this. I am a sucker for daily life vignettes. I don´t dig slomo for the heck of boredom nor speed ramps for the heck of... ahem, boredom. Or do they put that in their videos for any reason other than feeling bored? But this is the lens thread. So lens related, man, those FD lenses are razor sharp (meaning resolution here:), the 28mm f2.8 wide open, the 50 1.4 at F2, the 100mm 2.8 wide open. They deliver that full resolution of GH5s perfect 1080p. You can shoot them clean and nifty or with character- that 50 flares like a supernova with back light. I know it´s super common knowledge about the FDs. It was with the GH5 that I really got to see the image taking prowess of these FD lenses. I shot that combo this weekend for my short film. No need for me to get the Contax Zeiss ones, except that 28 Hollywood. When doing the GH5 handheldstyle, my FD 28mm started to get a slippery focus ring with my hands, which got sweaty due to my hard work with the camera. So its smallness and lightness are at the same time advantage and disadvantage for longer shooting times without follow focus. Anyone knows a housing mod for the 28 FD?

Well, that would be too much, watching 90min of wedding videos in a theater. The videos above are very romantic. But after a while I feel an urge that I want to hug someone myself so I have to leave the computer behind:) Like I said GH5 is a real movie camera. So title of this thread should be: The GH5 is a real movie camera. Oh, didn´t I just say that? Btw, I really like this one. I even wrote the filmer but never received an answer. The vimeo account doesn´t seem to get checked much:( For the educational purposes with reassuring effect, aaahem:), I must say, a very specific technique is used in the weddings above, among a number of aspects of visuality of course. I would call this approach the moving 2seconds photographs. It is very interesting to see what one can do with it, honoring the tools and craft. Have to rewatch Oskar and Ellie again. One of the best wedding videos I´ve seen. Despite the music though Of course, I don´t watch wedding videos too much or do I?

Jon, I don´t care what other dudes are doing, I want to see your footage showing off some jonpais 7.5mm glory!:)
-
I think its the kind of predictability of successfully and realiablilly reaching the desired effect of their efforts. It does not exlclude surprises and variety:) By the way, I enjoyed the video. It´s just with that technique any camera from Canon 550D on will do a good job. A DVX100 would do too, interlaced on interlaced displays would do a good job as well for the desired effect. Heck, the GH5 is a true cinema camera! I think it´s massive quality in almost every aspect. A big leap in quality. I shot my shortfilm with it this weekend, in REC 709, 1080p, 8bit and it´s still looking really impressive too my eyes. It´s a 10bit cinema beast and a C300 MK1 run and gun 1080p machine plus slo mo. All for 1800 USD with great IBIS and battery life and rolling shutter. To cameras for the price of one! And a great photo tool as well.

I find the title of this thread could be potentially misleading. Already with average micro/low budget production values it is easier than ever before to shoot cinematic images with this camera, the same would go for the G85. For the footage of flowers, I can tell that GH5 is able to capture images in a variety of lighting conditions, I would consider it as adequate test footage. The footage of the young woman above shows a blueprint for pleasing but also predictable framing and slomo pace, showing off the capabilities of a well liked specific muted look of an turkis gold color palette, as I would call it. A lot of this classic subject has been shot with the GH2 for testing the beautiful look of anamorphic. I would like a new thread gathering legit short films done with the GH5. There was an early GH4 video showing off a super clean digital look being some of the most cinematic footage to me done with a hybrid camera. Maybe I can find it again

Another time I have to agree with jonpais. That 12-60mm Leica glass for MFT has a very sharp look but not the beautiful cinephile pleasing flavor of beautiful mechanic glass. It rather seems a lens for corporate stuff. Tested it shortly today and was wondering why it was so hard to make footage look cinastiqueeeelicious! In a controlled and lit enviroment I bet I can put out a very unique super futuristic look. A cool, possibly brutal, maybe scifi but so to call very digital look in its own right.

@Alfonso Rodriguez Poncho, what profile did you record it with? 8 or 10bit? cheers

Ed, you can try a Kodak RFS 2035 or 3570. They are 2000 dpi only but solid built and fast and super fun to play with. Scan some Kodak slides with that and it´s the faithful way to get them analogue treasures into the digital format:) Use it with Vuescan. It´s an awesome piece of scanning software. DP1X is very different from the DP Merrill beasts though:) Ed, you can try a Kodak RFS 2035 or 3570. They are 2000 dpi only but solid built and fast and super fun to play with. It is not a privilegue to be left in peace or to to get equal pay. These are rights. The term privilegue has false implications. To be in lack of rights is the reality to many people. They don´t long for privilegue but for the most elemental rights. That´s how to name this massive permanent scandal the world is living in. White privilegue is a term of mass media and cultural appropriators. Non whites are being surpressed because of their skin color. Nothing about just not being privilegued, it´s about being surpressed. About activism: There are other words for typing interesting and sometimes relevant texts on the internet: typing interesting and sometimes interesting texts..:), which can be part of activism. Ain´t activisim just yet. Maybe by heart. But that is hard to estimate from the outside. I would assume you being a dedicated and warm hearted man. I am 100 percent sure, that you are, Ed. Did you watch "Harlan County USA" from 1976? Massive documentary. Takes a whole billion dollar army of 24/7 of mass media contributors to overpower pieces like that in their receptive effect. Too small of an audience for these films thanks to the billion dollar players in media. Current FF offerings lack what a GH5 has to offer as a camera. Don´t like Reds, because I have never tried any. You have never tried a Varicam LT and sofore don´t like it? I wouldnt call the whacko far lefts being left at all. They are just whacko. The center of what? There is no measurable middleground to quantify when it comes to ideas. It´s about their very quality. Different qualities have been adressed to attributes such as left and right and center positioned. It must be about the attributes themselves. Whackos aint left, neither are self acclaimed social justice warriors. Those are just benefitors of buzz. The cause of social justice is too important for the people who are in lack of it, too relevant to be exploited by buzz.

What, nobody expressing their exitement verbally? Anbody tried this yet without getting their phones burned? Sorry, LippyLee, no offense meant. Sorry, guys, for not testin it myself with a friend´s phone, but waiting for your braveness:) @BTM_Pix, you should set up a donation box for your efforts and achievement. And so should LippyLee.
-
you tease. Why not use a varicam lt instead of an amira? Current 36x24mm frame cameras have no benefit to me, usability and colors and adaptability of photo lens gems- these features are all lacking. I own the lens, a full frame camera I don´t own. What´s the fun with the obvious stuff anyway! The speedbooster is in use already. Andrew wrote an article about a wide angle 0.8 adapter from Richard Gale. But those are not available anymore. My remark about the ww converter in this your thread was due to the lack of actual support of my original thread, where Hockey and Andrew have given the best possible replies already in the meantime. So again, combining my 20mm Canon FD with a booster and 0.8 wide angle converter would give me a 11mm lens, which I would put on my MFT camera. Sharpness at F2.8 will be like F4 on my SLRMagic 12mm and it would have similar characteristics in color and contrast like my other Canon FD lenses. I am very sure I did not tell you anything new here About your topic: A human right is not a privilegue. Lack of human rights is result of the worst crimes such as racism and chauvinism, a lot of times even legalized. These are in my opinion the meaningful terms to deal with. The term of white privilegue is one of white washing:) and generalizing specific guilt of specific individuals, laws, actions, governing, companies and processes in the political, economical and financial systems. Have you watched the documentary "Harlan County USA"? This is awesome filmmaking. Social activism is hundreds of years older than us and has been a very dangerous encounter and it still is in some places. So I wouldnt call internet posts social activism just yet. Language is powerful, to non native speakers as well. They understand the difference between one term and the other, the possibility of expresseing one thing and lacking in expressing the other.

But Max, I dare you!:) Browsing through the Merrill pictures on Flickr reveals some breathtaking images. A Merrill in combination with its fixed lens is a winner in price image ratio, you cannot reach with a D810. But speed, easy of use, flexibility and high iso are fair trade offs, of course. I think Merrills are putting out a nicer image than the Quattros.

Beautiful comment. Leaving this thread now. No need to wait for engaging exchange within this group conversation any more. Off to new opportunities of exchange within the realm of EOSHD.

most convincing colors and color job on the GH5 so far. Great angles, rhythm, framing, despite slomo! Not your usual slomo stuff. Exellent mood piece.

Ed , there is one main benefit to me in replying to your interesting post: to engage in a conversation with you. Your rarely reply to me. The only benefit in replying to your posts comes into doubt by lack of feedback from your side. If I directly adress guys like you or mercer or jonpais, it is because of interest in you guys and your opinions, for me it is not about writing for the internet. A human right is not a privilegue. The denial of human rights is an act of violence. One does not do human rights a favour by proclaiming them as privilegue. 3 million dollars for 1000 workers sounds little compensation. Should have been 30 million.
