This was shot on the X-T2 with the 18-55mm, entirely handheld except for the wide shot that shows the full house. It was also before the AF updates.

Have y'all seen this? Ignore my earlier post about that great deal on the 2.8 kit lens at Abe's of Maine. I got an email from them needing me to call to confirm my order, always a bad sign. Then they asked if i wanted the "regular" or the "retail" version. Canceled.

Thought I'd share this...Abe's of Maine has the 18-55/2.8-4 for $345, new. It's now on its way to join up with my 35/1.4. I haven't ordered from them before but they are listed as an authorized dealer and I couldn't find any mention of grey market. Yep, all around AF excellence. Another feature it has that i really like is the button thingy to scroll through the drive settings instead of the dial under a dial brilliance. Push the button, get a list, single shot on top and movie on the bottom, one click up gets you from single to movie and one click down gets you from movie mode back to single. But it's really not a camera for a serious video shooter...no mic jack, etc.

I had the X-E3 for a minute and AF with the 18-55 kit lens was excellent. That's why i was so surprised by all the bad reviews of the X-H1's AF when it first came out.

Speaking of no IBIS, has anyone watched Wind River? Holy shitballs that is one shaky big budget movie. And just to make sure this post is on topic...my X-T3 preorder is in.

I've used the DR10L a bit and, like @IronFilm says, it is not interchangeable with a field recorder. But it is great for when you need a tiny mic that you can hide virtually anywhere. We had it inside cages with the talent (horror movie) and just let it run then used Pluraleyes to synch it with the other audio. It's also decent as a traditional on-talent lav but you can't monitor it so be sure to run some tests and get the level set for each actor and location.

I can't remember whether it's an a6300 or a6500 thread, but somewhere on here, @kidzrevil talks about his transcoding workflow. And he had great results.

Yeah, I've been coming around to that conclusion.

Good idea! I will definitely do that as a test. I just downloaded the free version and a single clip plays back more smoothly than in Vegas. Now to see how I like editing with it.

Thanks for the info @kye I'll definitely explore the free version first. I found one article that compared render speeds between several NLEs and Vegas won. I do like using Vegas, just a couple annoyances that have me thinking about trying something new. And from what I've read on here and other places, they all have their annoyances.

Yeah, I've been pretty tempted to check out Resolve. The one short that I edited with 15 was shot with an A6300. And I mistyped, it was an hour 50 not 15. I edited two shorts of similar lengths on Vegas 14 that were shot with an X-T2 and I don't recall thinking that the render times were excessive.

I have a Lenovo K450e with an i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz with 28GB, 2TB internal and a 2TB 7200rpm external HD. The graphics card is a GTX960. My most recent 7.5 minute short took about an hour and 15 minutes to render using proxies with Vegas Pro 15. And I'm going to be editing a feature pretty soon. Would upgrading the graphics card or switching to Resolve help with render times? OR is that length of time about what I should expect without a full upgrade to a much more expensive system? Thanks in advance!

As far as books, a couple of my favs are John Badham's and Making Movies by Sidney Lumet. Neither are recent but both have lots of good info.

This. Except the part about giving them line readings of how you want it delivered is generally considered a don't, but you may find that it works with some. I don't try to give line readings because if I could do the lines how I wanted them delivered then I would be an actor. Work with your actors and learn how to get what you need from each of them. What works great with one actor might piss off another. Sometimes you just need to lighten things up. On All the Pretty Horses, after several takes that he wasn't happy with Billy Bob told Matt Damon to do the next one as though "you're inside of Ernest Borgnine's ass." And that was the final take. Generally with theatre types, I remind them that they don't have to project to the audience member on the back row but only to right here. I also find myself asking them to pick up the pace, both line deliveries and movements.

There is a local one here called The Rocket City Film Festival that has a very low submission fee ($15, i think) and is only one night with mostly local-ish films. They have a very cool small venue but i don't know if they turn any submissions down. They accepted a couple of mine. The thing they are missing from what you mentioned is discussion. I was pretty disappointed that every one split as soon it was over and the groups there with a film clustered together, not much networking. They didn't even introduce the filmmakers in attendance. What you're talking about would be great. Go for it.

Yes, Ex-Machina was much better, but Annihilation has some gorgeous effects and an intriguing story. I really liked it right up until the SLIGHT SPOILER... ...ambiguous non-ending.

The video AF is surprising because it is excellent on the X-E3.
