@Neumann Films Thanks for sharing and congrats on the film, looks great!! Did you buy any chance get to try the new 12-60 f/2.8-4.0? I have the 12-35mm and 35-100mm. I'm considering selling the 12-35mm and getting the kit with the 12-60mm as it will almost cover the difference. Any thoughts?

Found a strap and I will do my best to make it as stable as possible

Sure thing! Will be fun to go out and shoot a little! It's getting dark here really fast but I will see if I can get it done by tomorrow. I see what you're saying about the GH4, I guess you've already seen Noam Kroll's 1080p 60p shoot on the beach? It still looks really good! And your reasons for not buying the G85 is actually some of the same reasons I will be getting the GH5 over the G85. The G line is really good now, but I just love the handling, size and controls of the GH cameras, + high bitrate 1080p, slow motion, headphone jack, battery life etc.

I agree with you on that. A GH4 II with everything from G85 would be have been great for people who want a production camera but don't need all the advanced features. I'm still going to get a GH5 though as I don't think it will happen. Maybe a GX9 will fill that gap at some point?

What focal lenghts are you planning to shoot and do you want to stand still, pan up/down/sideways or walk? I was out with the GX85 and that lens a few days ago and shot some standing scenes mostly at 12mm and some at 25mm-35m ish. But that camera has dual IS so I'm not sure if it's a good reference though. I'm borrowing a GH3 at the moment and can shoot something for you if you like, but only in 1080P Why not the G85 with dual IS 2? GH4 1080p 200mbps? Haven't used the 30mm.

Nr 1 is 0/0, nr. 2 is +3/-3 and nr 3 is +5/-5. I think the settings were 0, -5, -5, 0 in this test. I've read so many times about people warning about using h/s. It may not increase DR to me it looks like it can be useful if you want a less contrasty image. Keep in mind that the more you lower h/s the more saturated your image gets. I prefer image number 2 because I think the skin looks a little bit better. I don't think there is much in it and it also comes down to how you grade your files. Give it a try and see for yourself if you think there is anything in it?

1. I don't have an external recorder. 2. The Sennheiser transmitter look much better on her than a external recorder. I wanted it to be as small has possible. 3. I don't want to sync in post more than I have to, even though it's a simple task in FCPX. 4. The GH4 had decent enough preamps for me and I expect the GH5 to have even better ones. GH3 is ok for now. 5. The Sennheiser AVX system is small, easy to use and I'm able to monitor the audio while recording. She is wearing a lavalier and transmitter btw, but I will invest in a headset mic for better mic placement when she moves her head up and down at some point. Since you mention better audio with a lav, is there anything in particular you thought could be better? Appreciate the feedback!

Yes, I would say so. I didn't see more noise in your youtube video with or without NR, and I agree it's looks a tiny bit crisper. Most of the recommendations I have seen is either -4 or -5 on NR. I have been using standard 0, -5, -5, 0 for a while and it works well for me. I could probably lower the saturation at times I suppose.

I had the same reaction, but I don't think its meant to be accurate. It's more of a stylized look and I don't think it works with a white wall in daylight. Works better in the evening. Try to pull down the mid tones using the red curve to your taste and it works better with whites I think. But I don't regret purchasing it because it's was a good practice in grading to try to find out how Andrew made it

How well does the GX85 match with the GH3? Pretty good I think. I'm the idiot who sold my GH4 when I bought the GX85 because I thought it was a lot easier to get results with the GX85, and the rumors at that time indicated that the GH5 would be arrive in late 2016... And now when I need a mic jack I had to borrow my friends GH3 and shoot in 1080p. Can you tell which angle is the GX85 and which is the GH3? Lenses used were the PL 12mm and 25mm. Audio is recorded with the Sennheiser AVX system. Sorry for the strange language...

Haha, I the guess the tripod has some value after all Love the IBIS though! If you look closely at my video the focus is on the forehead and cheeks while the nose and chin is slightly off. It may not matter but it would have been a better test with a smaller aperture. It's great to see other people test/footage and compare them to our own. To learn from each others "faults" and discuss these things is very valuable to me. Thanks for sharing!

I think so. I'm not sure about the smudged detail but it could be the brightness I guess? Could also be that focus is slightly off as he moves around a little and you're shooting handheld. His face look more smudgy than his arm I think and isn't his watch a lot crispier than his glasses? I don't know. If you look closely at my video on iso 6400 you can see that it's a little more smudgy on the temples than in the face. Nice footage though and NR at -5 sure makes a huge difference!

New video shot using Canon 1DX Mkii and Sony A7ii
Fredrik Lyhne replied to DBounce's topic in Cameras
I shot another yoga video with and this time with a lavalier. The language might be a little strange to some but it works pretty good I think. I had to shoot with the GH3 as I sold my GH4 when I got the GX85. Didn't think we had to wait this long for the GH5... -
Macbook Pro 15" 2014 base model render times in FCPX

Thanks! I will have to put a new mac on my wish list for Santa. Hope it's not too late! Have you gotten your new MBP yet? -
Macbook Pro 15" 2014 base model render times in FCPX
Fredrik Lyhne replied to Fredrik Lyhne's topic in Cameras
Ok, i did not know that. Will have to try and edit some projects and see how it goes then. So to get faster render speeds I will basically need a new Mac. I am using 10.3.1. -
I have a MBP 15" mid 2014 base model with the following specs: 2,2 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MH z DDR3, Intel Iris Pro 1536, 256 SSD. I have been editing on a My Passport 2 TB 2.5" hard drive which is very slow but since my videos is short it's doable. I tried to render the same clip on the internal SSD and to my surprise the render times on a 20 sec clip with grading was almost identical. I also tried a Seagate 3.5" hard drive and Lacie 2big 8TB in raid 0 with the same result. On the BMC disk speed test the results was 70/70 MB/s, 140/140 MB/s, 300/300 MB/s and 500/500 MB/s on the internal SSD. So is the bottleneck the graphics card or processor or am I doing something very wrong here? Thanks!

I don't get what you mean Cary, the only thing clipping is the tiny reflection on the top of the marble? Doesn't matter in an ISO test does it? I only posted this so @jonpais could see the difference in exposure between the GH4 and GX85. In my experience skin tones and highlights look a lot better when underexposing with these cameras and that could be why he thinks the image from GX85/G85 look less "filmic". GX85 is nr. 1 and GH4 is nr. 2
-
I'm not sure but I think what you're seeing (and I agree) is because the image from the GX85/G85 is a little brighter than the GH4. Skin tones look a lot better if you underexpose just a little with these cameras. I wouldn't say it's fully 2 stops cleaner, but somewhere in between. Not the best subject but have you seen this video I made? If you look at the comparison at the end you can see that the GH4 indeed has a nicer image and the GX85 is a little brighter with the same settings, lighting and lens. Color is different though but the same WB settings on both cameras. Hopefully Cinelike D on your G85 makes look a little better for you than the standard/natural profile.

What rumor is that? link please? The B&H pre-order date has been removed if that is what you meant. Could still happen though... Pre-order for me as soon as possible too!

Sorry, I meant in FF fov and with the 4K crop. Forgot that you use 1080p and the XL version. So it's basically 23-45mm in 1080p and a little narrower in 4K. The 20mm is a great lens as well, I'm on my second copy but I don't use it often. It's just that for me the 15mm hits the sweet spot if both the subject and background is equally important, like in travel photography.
