New video shot using Canon 1DX Mkii and Sony A7ii
Fredrik Lyhne replied to DBounce's topic in Cameras
I agree with what Geoff said. Otherwise it looks good I think. If you're gonna make more videos like this I would check out CodyApp for inspiration. Like this one for example: https://www.codyapp.com/plans/true-strength-evolution?ref=soh_fp_all_4 I actually made a few yoga videos too and will be making more in a couple of months. It's nice to see how others are doing it so thanks for sharing! My videos are a bit simpler and with music instead, but maybe it's helpful to see something different? Have a look if you want: -
Sorry, I meant color correct. I find it easier to correct the white balance on the GX85, especially in mixed lighting. Don't know why but it just seems easier to get it right. It also holds up a lot better in the shadows and mids. Another thing which isn't exactly grading is that if I shoot a scene slightly underexposed to protect the highlights at iso 200 I can easily correct exposure in post without getting any noise in the image. On my GH4 I would often get a little noise if I missed exposure or WB. With that being said I would never have sold my GH4 if the GH5 wasn't on the way. As many has stated before me it's a great production cam. In fact the only thing I disliked about my GH4 was the low light performance.

Here's a rolling shutter test: As you can see it's a lot better in 1080. @mercer did you buy a GX85? I haven't tried the G7 but I just sold my GH4 learned how out much easier it is to grade footage from the GX85. Will get a GH5 when it comes out and can live a few months with the limitations of the GX85.

Thanks man, that means a lot! Hehe, I don't know about lessons but I can tell how I grade with Color Finale. I'm still learning too. I guess you have you seen Denver's tutorials? I didn't use any LUT as I was going for a natural look and I think most LUT's are too stylized. Some LUT's can be good for a base grade though. I used Standard 0, -5, -5, 0 with WB set to Sunny, which was to blue for my taste. I didn't set A3G3 as in my test it made a white wall yellow. I have to test more in different settings, but for now I prefer to fine tune WB in post. Most shots were f/1.4 btw. In Color Finale I first add Color Wheels and adjust exposure looking at the RGB parade. Then I add another Color Wheels and set saturation, in this case 1,1. Mostly I raise it between 1,0 and 1,1 or don't touch it at all, and a few rare times I lower it a bit. Then I add a third Color Wheels and adjust gain to set WB, which is a little tricky as you probably know. Usually it is enough to adjust the gain, but sometimes I also adjust gamma and lift, although not in this video. The last thing I did was to add Curves and pull down the shadows in the blue channel. This really helped getting that warm feeling. So basically I adjust exposure and WB using 3 x Color Wheels, and fine tune with curves and vectors if needed. The reason I use 3 Color Wheels is to see what every little adjustment does so It's easier to go back and forth. Here's before and after:

Sure. Here is a ungraded grab from FCPX from the GX85: And here is one from youtube: What do you make of it? -
Amazing video! Perfect choice of song as well.

You have to upgrade on a PC. I ended up sending my unit back so cant really help much, but at least at I managed to upgrade on my friends PC and then I was able to connect to the software on a Mac. If you need assistance I would recommend contacting Pilotfly Europe if you havent done that already.

Color cast when uploading in 4K on youtube
Fredrik Lyhne replied to Fredrik Lyhne's topic in Cameras
Thanks! I will look into it when I get back from work in a couple of weeks. Hopefully some of your suggestions work, otherwise I just have to upload in 1080p as that doesnt alter the colors. I have to say that I think this is really strange but could be that the standard settings for exporting 4K is different from 1080p in FCPX... @iaremrsir Thanks for trying to help but this issue has nothing do with different browsers. All the images in the top post are from the same clip (4K on left, 1080p on the right) opened in Chrome. The problem is that the colors change when I export and upload on youtube in 4K while in 1080p it doesnt. -

Color cast when uploading in 4K on youtube

Thanks! Care to elaborate? Not sure what means and how to do that. I am on a mac btw. Im away for work for 2 weeks but I will look into it when I get back. Thanks! So, is that something I can change in FCPX or on youtube? Thanks for confirming with the color picker, didnt think of that. I dont have a color checker, but I will definitely experiment with manual WB. But as Luke Mason and AKH says there seems to be some color space conflict. -
Some of you saw my skin tone comparison with the GX85 and GH4 that I uploaded last week and most people seem to prefer the ungraded image from the GX85 . That's fine with me as both grades were a little off. But I obviously had to take a closer look to see if I agreed. I suspected that youtube is doing something with the colors when I upload in 4K and it seems I was right. I uploaded a 1080p version and made a side by side comparison. For some reason youtube seems to add magenta when uploading in 4K. The result is that the ungraded footage of GX85 looks better and the graded image (which was a little too much in the first place) looks a lot worse. Has anyone else noticed this and is there a way to avoid it? 4K is on the left and 1080p on the right.

Does anyone have any experience with the Ikan DH5 or DH7? Thinking about getting the DH5 for my GX85. They're also Full HD but they only weigh 92 gram and 260 gram without batteries. The VS-2 weighs 380 grams. I really wish Aputure made a 5" monitor as the VS-2 seems great for the money!

@Greg Block Thanks for sharing the image of your rig! I'm thinking about getting a 5" or 7" monitor myself. I'm having a hard time deciding between VS-2 Fine HD, Ikan DH5e or DH7... I didn't think of the HDMI cable positioning as a problem as it's on the left side on my GH4. Here's how my rig could look when I decide which monitor to get. That's a 5" smartphone on top mounted with Shoulder Pod S1 and a ballhead screwed on to a SmallRig handle. I need the handle on the GX85 because of the HDMI is on the left but on the GH4 I won't need it so it can actually be an even smaller setup.

If this lens is in the same league as the 42,5mm f/1.2 Nocticron, which it most likely is, I think the price is worth it. The image samples look's great and the size of the lens is perfect on GH-cameras, doesn't look too big on the GX85 either.

@John Matthews I'll try the standard and compare it to natural next week. I was expecting the magenta comment I know I should just start the grade from scratch but I wanted to see what you thought about it first. Grading skin tones is really difficult! WB is tricky and needs more testing, but I agree that sunny is a good starting point in the summer. Which image did you like the best, GH4 or GX85?

Here's a video I made comparing the GX85 in Natural vs the GH4 with Cinelike D + Leeming LUT which is my favourite GH4 image. I'm by no means a colorist, but I think the results are ok. May need some additional tweaking here and there. What do you think? For some reason when I upload videos in 4K instead of 1080p the video get's more orange. Anyone else noticed that?

Here's some quick shots I took yesterday with the GX85 and SLR Magic 10 T2.1 + vari ND. It's nothing special really but that BIS is awesome! All handheld with no stabilization in post. Natural picture profile -2-5-5-2. Graded in FCPX and Color Finale. I also uploaded the ungraded version, link in youtube description.
