Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating discussion all in one place
zerocool22 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Quote from Clermond on dvxuser: I was in the field for about 1.5hrs at about 37°C. The camera was in the very hot car before. My iPad case melted on the dashbord. I was shooting 4K25 HQ and 4K50 HQ. 28 clips from 30sec to 3mins, 125GB in total. The only thing that overheated was I myself. The CFexpress card was very hot when I out it out. I just checked some files mostly for focus. I really like what I see. 19hrs on the feet. Time for some sleep. -
What if the R5 did not overheat would you still go the A7S III route?
-
This does remind me back of the beginning of dslr's (5d ii, 7d, 550d) where we had to transcode all our h264 footage to prores, as editing systems back in the day could not edit h264 efficiently. 10 years later and canon does the same thing once again.
-
Yeah besides overheating thats the mainproblem with the R5 and A7S III, the ump braw 12K clips even edit easier then 4k h265 clips. I want a hybrid though, otherwise I would have stuck to bm or zcam.

Panasonic S1H ProRes RAW 6K 12bit - download firmware
zerocool22 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Hopefully the used prices will drop to 2500€ soon due to the A7S III and R5. Then I might snatch one up. But I dont think the S1H was overly popular, and didnt sell to the masses for some reason. I only know one guy who owns one. -

What about editing, the R5 is horrible to edit at this point, havent tried the A7S III, but guess it wont be sweet. But what about editing S1H files, are they smooth to edit? I dont want to mess around with proxies. -
Yeah my mistake DR seems to be pretty good. Prores raw is something I cannot use though as Resolve does not support it + I dont like external recorders. Bm has got us spoiled. Hoping they release a new camera as well pretty soon and trump all competition.

How come the R5 looks cropped? Is there a crop on the full frame? Or did they use a longer focal length? -

thats very interesting, I wonder if there can be DIY solutions then. Like the hinge door on the pocket camera's. Very lame of Canon offcourse, not sure what they will do next. If they didnt do it for the R5, I dont think they will release a mirrorless camera in the few coming years that doesnt overheat. -

Oh and I would like to see a side by side with 5d iii ML RAW. As I guess it solves my issues with the 5d iii, but hoping IQ is as nice. -
I didnt expect that much difference between the fx9 and the a7s iii. Looks like Sony is holding out again, was kinda hoping they fixed colour as the other specs are minor upgrades.
-
Yeah I like the nikon colours, but dynamic range is still lacking on nikon cameras (and some usefull features). Maybe they will amaze us with their next camera, but I really doubt it. They have no higher end line to protect, so they could have done this 8 years ago and blew the competition away, but they didnt, so not expecting any miracles from their end.

Does it also overheat during normal working temperatures +- 21°? Cause 90% of the year, I work below that temperature. I cannot cope working in 30° myself anyhows. -

The canon R5 manual does state that the camera does not overheat in 4K 30fps (not high quality). Was anybody able to verify this already? As this solves my problem atleast. Also how to record audio on this thing? Like a xlr mkh-416, run it through a zoom h6 and then in the minijack? That is one thing sony did a great job on though with their A7S III and the S1H as well, too bad canon didnt think this through.. -
I guess Sony gave the camera to the wrong people then. Cause all the footage out there atm is mediocre.
-
I know I should not compare it to an arri alexa. But dang I just wish these companies could get arri style colour in an affordable package in 2020. The alexa is 10 years old, and these japanese companies dont come anywhere close to its image or colours 10 years later, in tech years thats ages. Sony had great colour on the F35, so not sure why they have not matched it 10 years later.
-
Yeah would not be surprised if the camera doesnt actually overheat, but canon just programmed it this way to not mess around with their C line. If so magic lantern could perhaps chime in, allthough they havent done anything new in a couple of years.

DR should be tested with the clog3 update. But sony could still have more DR, as that is one area where they are ahead of the competition, so would be surprised if canon out of the blue came up with a new 8K sensor that trumps even sony's sensors.
