hey guize so my brother, who does not know a computer from a hole in the wall, has been living and working happily with his macbook air for like 1000 years, but it finally broke. since it was a gift, he has no idea what mac laptops cost, and he recently had a brain aneurysm when he found out so he calls me and hes like I NEED A CHEAP LAPTOP?? and he wants to spend "a bit less" than a macbook air would cost... like half that lol. or less. i was like Ok its not gonna be apple, u kno that right? he was like What does that mean personally, i must confess that i barely kno what a chromebook is, what a pc laptop is, etc. he does web based work in chrome, some basic photo editing, stuff like that. obvs this is not a video/vfx machine, but i want him to get somethin that isnt garbage even if it is rlly cheap would u all edjumacate me on whats out there a lil bit?? idek where to start looking! ☹ my first question is are any of these chromebooky netbooky lil things EVEN worth the X hundreds of dollars that they cost, or do they just break in 3 months, are intolerably shitty, etc etc guize????? ??????

lol i DONT mean violate any copyright laws via youtube! ? theres lots of royalty free stuff up there, etc the way i do sound design, in practice, is By any Means Necessary by the time im doing sound on a project, i have inevitably COMPLETELY run out of money, so 90% of the sound fx become ME, recording myself • falling down • walking • stomping and so on thats my approach, would highly reccommend ?? ?

look: not to shame anyone but i SUCK at the super technical side of this stuff, and I JUST MADE MY 2nd SHORT FILM 100% in resolve, i swear ITS NOT THAT HARD lolol im living proof! just try a lil project with resolve as an editor, use the color tab a little, and go from there! fairlight (for audio) is easy and powerful! give it a shot!! u DONT have to be a fusion vfx master to get started!! ???

I posed the same question recently, and after my own investigation which involved actually doing this with the short im working on, heres my position on this... the answer is: yes and no YES, transcoding to a higher resolution, higher bitrate, etc, format could benefit your work in post IF youre • doing vfx • sharpening the footage *doing other stuff like that, theres lots of benefits BUT! NO, • you wont get some magic out of this process to get more out of your grade per se. what youre doing with color and exposure isnt gonna have more latitude just bc you make your crappy phone footage prores 444. u kno? thats my take on it, correct me if im wrong guize~!

i used to work at an appl store, and the "known unknown issue" is a thing. it SUCKS. you haveta pretend like "ANYTHING THAT ISNT ON APPL DOT COM" doesnt exist, even if we just had a meeting *abt not talking abt it* its amazing

well, its here! new 16" laptop is just what everyone expected. some important improvements, still pricey, still weirdly apple in all its quirky ways im actually grown up enough now to be planning on a PC for my resolve/vfx puter... but im brand new to all this so i have no idea whats going on ? 2 questions: - in a word, can/should i look at "gaming" laptops/towers? - is a laptop a good option...? id much prefer that bc portable obvs ♥️ edit: the one thing that i want fer SURE is a beast of a computer thats fast af for me while i learn vfx and edit complex projects in resolve!!! i want it to take p much whatever i can throw at it up to 4k ?
