@mercer oh btw i meant to mention, as you know i had an rx10ii (briefly lol), but i like your idea with it, and tbh that was my thought too: shoot something in black and white with it. id shoot in slog, and if you want easiness in post a contrast lut and a little fine tuning should be fine. i graded some of that footage to b&w and got good results ?? edit: whoops i just read your last post ?

@Liam i agree with everyone else lol fwiw, heres how things have gone with me lately... i recently got a lot of good feedback in this thread about length regarding a proposed episodic series of short pieces long story short (pun intended), i decided that id be better off with a short film – under 10 min. i figured that i could boil down my ideas into a shorter piece. so i wrote something, 10 pages, and although it came out ok... i just wasnt in love with it. its not me. my original concept was for a horror thing with verrryyy slow shining like pacing, and trying to turn that piece into something much shorter just didnt work for me. i have to borderline love anything i write in order to try to shoot it, and what i had come up with felt cliched, and at the least, something someone else could write but doing all that was really good for me. once i saw things clearly i released my grip on that concept, and then was my paw was open to receive new blessings of filmmaking!!! and somehow all that stuff totally resulted in me coming up with something almost completely different: • its short as can be, like 5 min or less ( = easier) • theres no dialogue ( = omg easy) • theres ~3~ characters instead of like 14 • theres one location instead of many AANND • MOST OF ALL, i like it way better. it feels like something id make, as opposed to something thats kinda forced so, whats the moral of this story, and how does it relate to this thread? i dont know @Liam, i dont know

so i logged out of my account, and signed in as a guest user (clean account), and took a bunch of screenshots to see what would happen, and things seemed ok so – talk to me like im 4 years old – does that mean its safe to say that its 3rd party software im running thats causing the crazy slowdown? i tried closing all the apps in my account to see what would happen – still slow. activity monitor seems normal, system is 96%+ idle during all this stuff again, talking about writing data i guess (?). screenshot normally takes less than a second to appear on my desktop, now its up to 17 seconds or something insane. and forget moving a folder of files ugh!!!

GUYS my late 2013 imac is fuuuuucked up after high sierra help me what i guess you would call data writing (?) has become VERY slow with this update example: I move a folder of files from one location to another, like from documents to my desktop. when i open the folder, its empty – but its not, its just taking SOOOoooooo long to move the data. in a crazy way. i cant work like this example 2: i just took a screenshot, something i do constantly, and it took the tiny .png file 17 SECONDS to show up on my desktop. that usually happens in a second or less AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HELP 911 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

haa! thats so funny. i love that show. mulder would be so happy with all the ufo news right now the irony is that ultimately the HD release of the x-files needs a fair amount of work in my eyes: as you may know they didnt have a bunch of the original 35mm footage for establishing shots, and also some effects shots, so they stick out like a sore thumb in SD. i mean they look really ridiculous. and they redid all the type (had to), but somehow managed to oddly change the famous typewriter font. wtf. i could remake that font in like a few days. So lame!!! ive heard that too lol. im no expert but imo film scans can get too sharp. the film grain is perfectly noticeable in a lot of xfiles scenes in 1080p, itll just be sharper grain in 4k dont get me wrong, id scan it in 4k, work in 4k for sure, but i dont think youre loosing much with an HD output is what im sayin. but i have to laugh bc in this case id welcome a 4k xfiles re-re-release so they could fix those goddam missing shots ?

@Jonesy Jones for me it depends on the content... like if im thinking about getting the x-files, originally shot on 35mm, on bluray, then that 1080p is great, and idk how much a 4k scan of that film would be beneficial at all, at least to that show. that grid of 1920x1080 pixels is plenty of space to reproduce the film scans and have them look awesome however if i wanted to buy something that originated in 4k, then id totally want a 4k disc or whatever ^^^^^^ i watched mary poppins in hd the other night it was frickin amaaazing

@mercer yeah, i shot those with my d53, and thanks! the last ones a PERFECT example of "B&W B.S." lol theres no people in these shots, but this does illustrate my point that you can get away with a lot in b&w look at the exposure... its flat af! ?

YES!!! what a good topic i LOVE b&w photography, thats how i started, shooting 35mm black and white film ive made many b&w darkrooms in closets and bathrooms lol frankly, dealing with color is WAY harder than shooting b&w (so many variables!) – b&w should be really freeing~! i think most ppl will find a HUGE amount of room to play in post, since you can fuck with hues and exposure like crazy to get a cool b&w image. although id love a dedicated b&w camera, having the color data to play with in post can be quite interesting i would love to make a b&w feature! anyway heres a few shots i took the other day that i ~chose~ to treat as b&w bc the color was so meh... much better! *i would recommend listening to the song low desert by r.e.m. while viewing these pics

i would say that in general 1080p ML raw is not for highly detailed shooting – the 5d3 is resolving way less detail than the current competition. a highly resolved 4k image looks worlds clearer than a 1080p one on my 1080 plasma; on a 4k screen the difference will be even more significant and the screen will be far less forgiving overall, so be prepared for that

tbh i couldnt agree more, and i agree with the libertarian spirit of @maxotics's points, but where i live (in southern california no less) there is ~ONE~ high speed ISP how can new ISPs even come up in the game? dont you need zillions of dollars of infrastructure? what about satellites? idek lol as far as this recent ruling, if there were 15 companies competing for my business, that would be a completely different story. but im super scared of monster ISPs, who also have political motives, who also own massive content libraries being the sole arbiters of the US internet ?

well believe it or not i downloaded high sierra and im having serious problems (a) late 2013 imac restarts from a sleep for no reason. instead of waking from sleep like usual, it takes a few moments and then i see "Your computer has been restarted because of a problem". wtf!! (b) nvidia drivers asking for update on restart, although i did that already (c) bizarre slowness in moving files from one folder to another on HD (i thought high sierra was supposed to make that better??) • ironically, MLRawViewer and RAWMagic Lite work just fine anyone else havin all kinds of trouble w high sierra??? what tha heck is going on here~! ?
