  1. How did you test whether the temperature reported by the Canon firmware is an accurate measure of the temperature of whatever component (or part thereof) it purports to measure? I’d be reluctant to rely on that reported temperature when making conclusions. It would be preferable to measure the temperature independently. But that notwithstanding, interesting stuff!
  2. Yes, I live in Saariselka in Northern Finland (250km north of the arctic circle) over the winter. The downside of aurora filming in Finland is the lack of interesting scenery! The fjords and water of Norway offer so much more. A lovely part of the world! Enjoy - let’s hope we get decent activity and clear skies.
  3. Where do you go to do this filming?
  4. Although I’m not sure they need an excuse for deciding not to implement a feature a lot of people are happy without and thereby keeping the cost down.
  5. Ignoring the absolute numbers for a moment the interesting thing is just how much RED overstate DR compared to the others quoted.
  6. I’m going to buy a Komodo. So I can come on here and tell the amateur hybrid camera video makers all about my thick colour, GS (yes! yes! YES!) and other juicy comments designed to reinforce my self built pedestal... Or I might remain perfectly happy with my A7Siii at -30 degrees, iso 51k at midnight filming the Aurora in Sony thin colour whilst keeping my fingers warm by sticking them into the sensor (thereby ruining the final vestiges of what was terrible IBIS anyway). Choices. Choices.
  7. The interesting thing about early Komodo footage is that it is likely to have been shot & processed by those who know what they’re doing. Once it’s out amongst the masses (and at the price it is cheap enough to be a consumer product) I’m sure we’ll see footage as bad as anything else. (Slightly tongue in cheek from a bitter “Jim promised a cinema module” Hydrogen buyer...) If things work out ok in 2021 Komodo will definitely be an option.
  8. Was that your first ever selfie?
  9. What do other external recorders (Blackmagic video assist) allow? Presumably 4k 10bit 422 is possible? I can’t decide whether to get a Ninja - the cost of the Anglebird SSD plus the reader is putting me off...
  10. Phil Holland uses several REDs to get high resolution images. Over on reduser I’m sure he has described this and stitching process in some detail. Also: http://www.phfx.com/articles/Filming100MegapixelLargeFormatAerialsOverNewYork/
  11. My error - I thought you meant PB was about to make shill comments. You are correct, the comments others will make will definitely fall into that category. The wider community needs the likes of PB to do this type of stuff. I think it’s entertaining, informative and useful. I wonder whether Sony will address the issues he raises?
  12. Why the hostility towards PB? As far as I can tell (my camera won’t be delivered until September) he presents a reasonable and balanced opinion. And he states it is an opinion, that he was paid for the two short films and on no account should one buy an A7Siii based on his review.... He certainly isn’t a “shill”.
  13. Miller Air. Great tripod.

    Low light

I went with an A7Siii plus the 24mm 1.4 GM as my low light solution. Unlikely to replace my P4k for anything else. Delivery in September I think.
  15. I ordered my A7Siii without watching a single review on YouTube. I feel I’ve missed out on the joy of the buying process. I did watch some paddle boarding on the Thames and daresay I’ll watch Bloom’s review once it is published. It (coupled with the GM 24mm f1.4) suits my limited needs almost perfectly.
  16. Can one record to a Blackmagic video assist or is the external hdmi recording limited to the Prores raw Ninja?
  17. I’ve been filming the aurora for years in real time. It’s the “in 10 bit” I’m excited about!!!
  18. In light of recent offerings I think that qualifies as “exceeds expectations”... I’m excited by it. And will buy.
  19. Isn’t that exactly what it is? It may well find itself in higher-end situations but it is still designed for and sold to a mass consumer market. Komodo is possibly the least mass-market visually.
  20. Is this in any way related to Sony’s Xperia Pro phone and it’s monitoring and 5G transmission abilities?
  21. And that’s ok. Plenty of other options available for those looking for 24mp or whatever. Personally I’ve decided (unless it is significantly different to the leaks) to get it ASAP. It suits my needs (albeit not perfectly - but I accept that it wasn’t designed and built “for me”). Lovely rich footage at high iso is my niche. I’ll live with the questionable weather resistant build, the ergonomics and the lack of full size hdmi. Will get the 24 f/1.4 GM to keep it company (my first ever AF lens...) Credit card is ready!!! Might also pick up an A7ii for photo purposes...
  22. Insta360? Great fun and ridiculously easy to use. Not sure about the current price however. And fails the mic test.
  23. I’d be happy with the 12mp. Would like improvements in ergonomics, hdmi port & weather resistant build quality. Possibly unlikely. Anyone wanting a hybrid has the A7 series? For some unknown reason the 1DXiii has been calling recently...
  24. I do something very similar. My set up is a BMp4k (Prores 422) with a Rode lav microphone (soon to be replaced by a Sennheiser wireless lav) and BlindSpot Gear lighting. I have two LED panels which sit one each side and slightly above head level - one is slightly brighter just to give a bit of depth. The third light is behind the speaker (at the side of my green screen) and gives the hair a highlight. I find that in FCP all I need to do is use the “key“ feature and it simply works (unlike Resolve in which I struggle to get the key to work as easily). It’s not best practice but space limitations mean I have to stand close to the screen - it still works! I built a holder for an iPad which I mount just above the lens. I put my text into Keynote (PowerPoint) and use a Bluetooth remote. Eye “contact” is not as good as an Autocue but it works absolutely fine. (I also do this using an ATEM mini and record the hdmi output to a Video Assist which, again, is simple to use and works well. This setup is slightly more convenient to use because it’s all set up on my desk). Ok, it’s not the BBC but I find the setup is very effective. (I should add that I have no formal idea what I’m doing but it really does work!)
