I'm looking for a cheap solution to effectively improve my handheld. Something that is a small form factor but will add another point of contact. I've seen pistol grips for approx 10-15 dollars on eBay/amazon etc. All the YouTube footage I find is at least 4-5 years old. So my situation is this: using my current kit: Nikon D5300/Tamron 17-50 2.8VC would a pistol grip aid in handheld work, even when shooting 60fps..? I do have a benro monopod but again something like a pistol grip would fit in my bag/pocket whereas the monopod has its own seperate bag Thoughts? Would it make enough of a diff to warrant a purchase?? Edit: for $15 just picked this up....certainly shouldn't hurt..

Here is the video for those interested.. will probably take this down soon...

Agreed! I've come to not like the standard profile at times especially with how it crushes the blacks but other than that it produces a fine image in the right hands/with the right support gear!
-
Appreciate it man! Just enjoy whatever you shoot man. I got some great shots with the d5300 and I'm sure you can get great shots with g80!
-
Bro! That does look nifty! I was thinking something like that or a gorilla pod like every Youtuber and their moms use..

Yep I have an E Series 28mm 2.8 I shot a whole corporate video on. On my Nikon FE2 it just has a cool look to it. I don't really need new lenses but maybe a new handheld rig of some sort on the cheap is in order!

Appreciate it mercer! Honestly, I was really impressed by some of the shots I got in this video. Hopefully I can share it if so I'll post a link. I was renewed shooting with it for a week. With a little practice and some warp stabilizer it's not impossible to get a decently steady shot on this. Just takes more effort!

Below are stills from a recent travel video I made. The video was shot on my nikon d5300 with a tamron 17-50 2.8. Everything I shot at 60fps slowed down to 23.976 for that cinematic look. But if anyone is curious on the results you can get from shooting in FLAAT 11 on Nikon below are some examples. I will say I've only had decent results shooting in good light. Secondly, I am no colorist and I was using an Osiris lut on this. I am trying to go for a very stylistic, miami/beach vibe. I was happy with the end result for a fun little travel video. I might post a link to the video but below are some stills. Curious to know your guys thoughts. Yes I know on the beach flat/color grade file I went a little overboard per the sky. Love the colors in that lut though... ---edit--- I realize these are not the sharpest shots but as I'm not sure if I can share this video yet due to family members being in it this is just some examples....

I've gotten better as this trip has gone on...I find sometimes I'm so excited to shoot I forget to use 3 points of contact. When I extend the camera using my hands and neck I tend to get a stable shot that requires just a touch of warp stabilizer in post. I have no use for the time lapse feature, that just takes an additional 30 seconds in premiere to do. I'm a bit nostalgic too so idk I feel the Nikon color science is great even shooting with the flaat11 profile I'm finding as long I have plenty of light it yields a base that can be graded however. Maybe what I want is two cameras...a solid d7500/d5500/d5300 and a slow mo camera like the rxIV?

Looking forward to it! Man I was looking at my footage this morning... if my 5300 had ibis and 120fps hd I would be so satisfied.
-
Wow the d7500 does look okay. I will look up reviews on the e-VR 3 axis system. In the meantime though, at $1300 new I could pick up plenty of camera for that used and probably buy up. On the other hand, that 7500 is a bigger camera than my 5300 so I think handheld would be a bit smoother with the added weight at least for me.

If you could manage to post a clip of that I would much appreciate it! @mercer

Thanks guys! I probably post something like this every quarter but I know this time I'm serious. And yes I'm expecting a lot out of a little but again that was a bucket list thing. Honestly there are so many options out there it's kind of mind numbing. Even specs considered at the end of the day it's just a tool. Will more than likely keep the d5300 for stills anyways

Question for anyone interested... currently still shooting on a d5300, but life has changed and I'm looking to upgrade this year. I only own 1 noteworthy lens for this camera, a tamron 17-50 2.8. Here is the catch..id ideally like to be under $1000, under 600-800, maybe even 4-500 and would obviously be considering used. Wants: -Good slowmo 120p but will do with 60p -4K capable - flat profile of some sort. I get decent results out of properly exposed flaat on my Nikon but again built in would be nice. Not Deal Breakers but would be nice: -ibis - AF final thoughts: I realize in my price range I'm probably looking at either used/new: a63/6500, g7, g85, bmmcc, bmpcc, possibly a used Olympus (already have an excellent Zuiko 50mm 1.8 from an OM2N). I also realize I could compromise and get a camera w/o IBIS and get a nice gimbal. What cameras besides those listed above should I be looking at in my relative price range? Fuji? Olympus? Panasonic/Sony? I want to upgrade in terms of usability. I love the Nikon image and may post some stills from a vacation/travel/family video im doing now but the advancements in the past few years could really help a hobby filmmaker like me focus more on the fun parts like story/editing/grading. For my purposes Sony/Panasonic seem to be leading based on price/specs but I know specs/YouTube videos don't always tell the story so if anyone can guide me or offer some opinions hit me up! Quote

I have really big hands but I'm not too concerned about buttons. Just usability. I love the image the d5300 produces but I really want something with IBIS I can use and not have to worry about stabilizing the shot in warp stabilizer or something. I have a benro monopod that works fine but again if I could get down to that basic just a camera workflow that would be sweet. I'll probably keep the d5300 for stills for the foreseeable future as 24.2 MP 4000 x 6000 pixels is still damn good. Wants: 4k/1080p - 24fps/120fps - probably interchangeable lenses - flat profile - IBIS for handheld. Under $600 for body. Am I essentially looking at the GX85? What else used/new equals this. Not afraid to buy used..
-
D5300 owner here-- did you use manual focus for this? Would love to acquire a cheap ish camera with 5-Axis and some kind of natural/flat profile. GX85 is a likely candidate!

Time to dump Adobe. First impressions of Resolve 14 and EditReady 2.0
Dustin replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Hmm since I don't have a 4k camera I will for sure have to try it out. That said for MY usage, Adobe hasn't been too bad on me. Sure it glitches at times and for the longest time the audio didn't work for me but lately I've been satisfied. That said it is at the end of the day, just another tool to get the job done. It would be nice to possibly just drop down to not having to pay for the WHOLE adobe suite every month... -
Been a premiere user for 4 years now and although at times it has been buggy, lately I've been fine! Also I've found their tech support fine- they've always fixed my issues, screen share and all. But again I'm not working on GH5 footage and I usually update my computer when I have to. I tend to not be on the latest gen of anything until I'm positive the kinks are worked out.

Yeah I wasn't sure if he was using it until at one point he was talking to his camera guy at beam and said "I got that 7mm lens you told me about.." Fan of Casey or not check this episode out..red content!! I also thought it looked fantastic.

Like it or not...Neistat is a major player in the content creator world. Whether that means filmmaking or vlogging...I think the two are actually more connected than they'd like to admit because they are still creating content. I'm a fan of his work and his rapid-cut editing style. I know he recently said he was using an a6500. I'll be honest though....I liked his colors better when he was using canon. This only has to do with colors not image quality or otherwise. There is no doubt Sony is killing the frame rate game. We shall see what he has to say about the GH5!!

What I would like to see is someone do a shot test comparing it with old version of ML and maybe another camera. Everything looks good from what I have seen but I would like to see some context
-
Wow that is an excellent idea! I'm sure many haven't heard of it but wouldn't it be great if big sites like ebay ran it through something similar? Good read.

this looks SICK!

Looking forward to your review/footage on the GH5 andrew!
