Dude that sounds pretty cool! I still think I would go for a quad-core since I also do some audio production/recording and I don't think that uses the GPU much. But that's pretty cool!
-
Cool article! Wouldn't a 13" only get you a dual-core processor though? I never had any luck with dual core processors in the past in laptops.

Thank you sir! I'm not an idiot but spent about 5 minutes with it before a shoot and just decided to use a ball head/tripod combo. Tomato/Tomatooo

I bought the Genustech model but I've only used it like a few times. I don't shoot outside much. Also color casts are usually easy to fix in post. Just don't go super cheap and you will be fine!

Thanks man. I really need to just sit down and figure out what I actually want. I love the flexibility of a laptop and I really am USED to OS X. I'm aware it's not an end all be all but it's what I'm used to. I'm not editing a 2 hour movie anytime soon so for my needs laptop is probably just fine

eGPU huh...I use to be pretty active in a few audio recording forums and I recall some studio owners purchasing expensive boxes that added a few extra slots for their ProTools HD rig this looks like a similar concept...essentially adding an external GPU? I can't take the needed time to repair or even send it off as I use it for my day job. If that changed I would gladly send it off but honestly I think I'll just start saving up over 2017 to get a new laptop and keep taking good care of the one I have. I'm not uncomfortable taking apart computers so I might look into that heat sink replacement as well!

Really feel like my 2012 MBPR is reaching upper age of its life as it gets VERY hot since I've owned it and is very prone to graphics card glitches when editing simple 1080p .mov files. I read somewhere that Apple basically admitted this particular line has a faulty motherboard but I don't have applecare or funds to get a new laptop. Hopefully this thing will keep chugging for another year or so as most of the time it performs great for what I needed to. Would elevating it on a stand help reduce the heat factor? I've read so much bad press on the new line of apple laptops that for the price I think I would just wait another year and see what things look like then. Premiere Pro editor here.

Stupid quick question for those on their lunch break...I recently got to dig into using my Aputure 198 and 528 lights. They work great for the price. For a light stand, the 528 came with a head that only tilts up and down. Can someone link a head for this light that will allow me to pan as well?

Well that looks pretty good to me! I certainly like the look and I feel like the overcast conditions actually aide with the look/color of the car here. ---EDIT--- After re-reading the specs on BH that looks like a pretty impressive camera for the specs! Besides A-Mount what are the cons of this camera again? No 10 Bit out/raw? How is the rolling shutter/aliasing?

I gotcha! For the record I love shooting 35 film and even recently bought a dedicated film scanner so my costs are essential the roll plus $3 for dev. But I understand tech will change as it does. We shall see what Nikon comes up with! Might suck might not but none of us can say for sure until they do something. Tbc.

I just don't agree with the notion that soon we will be pulling all our photos from videos. Sure this is already a possiblity on RED cameras and even 4K panasonics (and others) already and I've done it myself for YouTube cover photos. I understand that with time technology evolves and converges like our smart phones for example. But I think there will probably always be dedicated still cameras, even if the video method became popular.

So you're saying they essentially, lack the infastructure that Sony/Panasonic has when it comes to video development/r&d? That would make logical sense especially since those companies are invested in the cinema world whereas Nikon is not...
-
Isn't that the truth? It's amazing how many friends and friends of friends I've seen brag about "my new baby", only to see they are still just using the kit lens and using Photoshop to get that "blur effect". The masses don't care about specs they just want to take good pictures and see their favorite YouTubers using canons so they buy the Canon Video kit and think that's all there is to it.

So did Nikon ever absorb Samsung's NX line technology? I would think now would be the time to learn from that. If that wasn't the case then they certainly need to study the current crop of cameras that are killing it and then beat that. As both a photographer and cinematographer that would be perfect. Give me a professional body that isn't ginormous, has good IQ, nice 4k Nikon Image w/ flat profile, doesn't have overheating issues (cough sony), at least 4k 60p and 120fps 1080p, IBIS and nice stills and we have a deal! IMO anyway. Also I'm curious as to when Nikon will unleash said new cameras.

Fair points! Just thought I'd share in case someone hadn't seen it. I tend to be an optimist so I would hope that Nikon comes out with an attractive solution to rival Sony/Panasonic/Olympus latest offerings. Sure you are probably right given Nikon's latest history it will be "catch up" and probably has a high likelihood of just being average. But the optimist in me hopes for the best here-given that after their last report, their options were pretty much: ignore the trends, catch up, or fold. We shall see.

Did anyone see this article? Thoughts? https://petapixel.com/2017/02/25/nikon-speaks-will-focus-medium-high-end-dslrs-lenses/ (My apologies if this has already been posted in another thread!)

Agreed! My d5300 paired with a 28mm e series is a cool look too! But I must say after seeing all kinds of YouTube videos with handheld gimbals, IBIS, it seems like if Nikon doesn't produce something with that, my next body won't be a Nikon.

Anyone see this already?? http://nikonrumors.com/2017/02/13/nikon-reports-extraordinary-loss-fundamental-company-wide-restructuring.aspx/

I just got into shooting film last year with my Olympus OM2N and Nikon One-Touch compact 35mm 2.8. The olympus is one I will never sell because I grew up watching my father shoot one. I would HATE for Nikon to go the way of being a heirloom or something we talk about as a brand that USED to be. Nikon definitely needs to do SOMETHING fresh. Either in the film route or video route. As a film shooter I would love to see more film options but the instax mini is a fun camera when used with black and white film. I agree with Andrew though....my d5300 can produce 4000 by 6000 RAW picture files. It wouldn't be that hard to make that a beautiful raw image for video... come on nikon!
-
Fun thread idea. I personally don't think Nikon as a brand will go anywhere. As an outsider looking in and owning both a nikon dslr and a film camera...I think nikon has a ton of LEGACY backing it. As of 2017 though, they are not keeping up the way other brands like Sony and Panasonic are spec wise. In terms of video if I HAD the money I would go for something with IBIS, 4k, great autofocus and a flat profile. I think with nikon they just need to asses the market and figure out if they are gonna cater to video in a more competitive way than they do now. If they DON'T then they will be in trouble but I don't think they will completely go away as their photography division obviously still makes money. Just my thoughts!

I am curious as to what competition will come about now that Panasonic has released a body with 10bit at $2K. Surely the competition will get interesting?? That said, I think the sub $1500 market is very exciting and competitive these days with take your pic a6300/a6500/GX85/BMMCC/BMPCC etc. I'm a low budget guy so hopefully this 10 bit goodness will trickle down soon enough!

What I think I'm gonna do when the funds/time comes is build just a killer editor pc. I've specd out a few builds and for my needs/wants, it seems you can build a pretty good desktop for around 1200-1400 or even less. Will think about a hackintosh or keep the option open for it to be but I'm worried that could just unnecessarily complicate things. I'm pretty comfortable with computers and although I've never built my own, I've taken them apart and upgraded computers I've had. Yes the hackintosh sounds awesome but scary so I'll probably wait on that. But as long as my MacBook Pro keeps on trucking I'll probably always keep it. I've realized as nice as having a laptop is, I usually just edit at home. But it who knows given the changing state of computers I might change my mind tomorrow

I'm questioning this as well! I've always tried to use the right tool for the job. Prior to getting this 2012 MBPR I had windows laptops that I hated for years. But it seems the playing field has been leveled out and for my needs and wants at least, seems like at this point in time a custom build/hackintosh/windows laptop have a lot to offer for the buck! Thats great but at this point in time I don't wanna use FCPX when I like Premiere just fine for my uses. (After Effects too). I have used FCP but honestly it hasn't been since version 7 and I really cut my teeth on premiere so I favor it. That said if the day comes when I need to jump to FCPX or Resolve, I don't care as long as I get the job done.

Thanks for the suggestions all! As mentioned above I do in fact have a monopod, a benro model with flip locks and the s4 video head. I love the video head and the monopod itself is okay although it tends to get loose and need tightening. I can definitely see purchasing a shoulder rig sometime as well. While I would love to try out a camera like the a6500 with awesome autofocus and one of those fancy handheld gimbals, that is beyond my purchasing power. Still trying to stick with my goal of improving my overall kit this year. Already took a small step buy buying some good LED lights.
