Well I'm already technically "upgrading" from the d5200. At least this camera doesn't have the banding that was so evident. It served me quite well. For now I'm gonna use this camera and when I have enough saved maybe I'll pick up a better camera (better suited for video) for myself. Maybe a g7/gh4/bmpcc who knows. But for now, I'm gonna rock with the d5300

Thanks! I may be loosing my mind over stupid stuff.

I purchased a d5300 body from Adorama yesterday for 400. Its not arrived yet. I am planning on getting a better camera for myself in the next few months as this one will mainly be used for work. But in the meantime it will be my only camera once I sell my d5200. As I've been renting a d5300 with my d5200 in the shop, I've liked it ok thus far. But is the flaat 11 profile comparable to the d5500's flat profile? Can someone please answer this? Should I have spent a little more and gotten the refurb d5500 kit at 569 and sold the lens? Or is the flaat 11 profile on the d5300 comparable. I'm only asking because I've not had a chance to shoot flat on a Nikon d5500 and was initially just trying to save some cash.

I'd like to thank everyone here who has helped me with advice. Pulling the trigger on the 399.99 d5300 body from adorama. It is compatible with my lenses and if I want to grade it looks pretty good with flaat 11 and luts for my tastes. When I get my old d5200 from the shop, I may keep it as a back up or sell it. But I will now begin saving for a video camera + rig specifically for my personal stuff. Ideas include but not limited to: bmpcc, g7, gh4.

Yes but its grey market...right?

Ok so my dilemma is as follows: d5300 body refurb from Nikon is 400. D5500 body Nikon refurb from adorama is 599. Which one would you do? The newer model has the flat profile. But I already have flaat 11 which actually seems to grade ok considering it's not an a7sii/gh4/ pick your better camera. If I want to invest in two bodies I could get the cheaper one then save for a better camera in a few paychecks. Idk...

Ah I think you are right, I ultimately need to get 2 bodies. While the built in motor would be quite nice (Had a wonderful 50mm 1.8d that was a pain to manually focus on the tiny d5200 screen), I think this is the one I'm going to go for. Refurbed they run 399 at adorama. If I get my d5200 and it works, I can trade that in for about 200 thus leaving me with a little cash to start saving for a second body.

I'm sure it is! Well for now like I said, I do take pictures for my main job. Videography is unfortunately my "side-business". I don't really get to get into videography as much as I'd like to. I will purchase a d5300 body to use for work/side jobs and then perhaps start looking at a seperate camera for myself

gotcha! (It's been a long day man lol) Well I think it will ultimately come down to budget/needs for me. I'm still gonna get a d5300 but as I'm getting more into video I'm probably gonna get a more video friendly camera in a little bit for my own use. Thanks everyone for the help!! This is like one of the few websites.

Wait on another thread you said flaat 11 was fine and you could grade the crap out of it so you're saying its not really that good to use? Just trying to clarify lol
-
I'm now really not sure what to do... perhaps I should keep the d5200 or upgrade to a d5300 then save for a used gh3/new g7? Hmmm. For interviews, I find the d5xxx picture to be just fine. But say I wanted to shoot a short and color correct obviously that really doesn't work on the d5300/5200.
-
So If I get a d5500 with the flat profile, then I can lightly color grade relatively non-destructively? Or is it still pointless. I mean for the price I'm looking at I could actually get a g7 and a cheap speedbooster for not much more than 600. Sorry if this seems like this post is turning into a rant. I'm testing a rental d5300 while I wait for my d5200 to return. When it does, broken or not - I will use that to fund a new camera
-
No offense taken. I'm not a "kid" actually. Sure I'm young in my twenties but anyways, when I started this thread I was looking for ideas for a cheap lighting kit. Unfortunately I now have to buy a camera but I've seen all kinds of great ideas here. Really glad this website exists!

I just found an awesome video review showing a short filmed entirely with the YN 300 and YN 600. They also showed using a diffuser for softer light. Do you find yourself doing this?
-
Wow these look hard to beat for the price. I love my Yongnuo Flash, have absolutely no issues with it. My consider this. Gonna have to be after I buy a new camera though. But this doesn't sound like a bad deal at all.
-
Ok so after doing some testing and I'm still testing, I still think flaat 11/10 yields better results, but I also don't think this camera is obviously meant for intense heading, just light grading. I think the stock profile isn't even that bad either. Sure it's a baked look, but with the right lens and lighting it works
-
haha this is true! Well I will try flaat 11 again.
-
So what profile and settings do you recommend using, and what grading/LUTS etc? I'm testing this out.
-
I will try to post some screen grabs of my experience using this profile! I shot some this morning but I realized I had it slightly wrong compared to what you said. So whenever I get a chance I will post. From the wrong but tweaked standard profile I shot on, it does seem to allow for some light grading. I'm using Premiere Pro CC 2015. Should I first use the Nikon d800 input lut or the universal SL lut before adding a creative lut?
-
I'm gonna try out this profile you've made. I'm still renting a d5300. When you said "color:-2" you meant hue right?
-
Right, gotcha! I would never buy a camera from anywhere but a BH, Best Buy, or the local shop. I have bought the tamron 17-50 on eBay and it worked out great. Got a good deal!

Question to anyone: Would it really be that hard to put aperture switching in live view on their mid -range consumer cameras like the d5300/5500. I feel like the cameras now having a flat profile, wouldn't adding this and exposure for manual lenses alleviate many of the issues we have with the workflow on Nikon cameras sub 1000 ish? Can you link me any examples shooting in this profile? Why is this camera (and others) much cheaper "new" from eBay? Not to ask a stupid question but... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-D5500-24-2-Mp-DX-Format-CMOS-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body-Only-Black-/321671464177?hash=item4ae51d04f1:g:~CUAAOSw9mFWH-g4

Would this be a good deal? Same price as the d5300 body new... http://www.adorama.com/INKD5500BKR.html?hotlink=t&svfor=5m&gclid=CK39javUqsoCFcKGaQodLp0CCg

For budget reasons I'm most likely going to get the d5300. Further down the line in a year who knows but for my lenses yeah the d750 doesn't make sense. If anyone has seen my posts on this forum, I was saving for investing in lighting anyways before my camera breakdown So unless I hear that flaat 10/11 doesn't look good on the d5300, that is what I will be getting. I'm not a noob but I recently discovered 12 bit raw for photos on it and was blown away by the amount of control!
