Its mostly minor like fine detail improvements, slightly more dynamic range but nothing like magic lantern quality, slightly better noise pattern and less banding issues. Its nothing stellar but its a welcoming change, I also seen them trying to remove the in-camera video noise reduction and quality definitely seemed to excel there so its clearly NR just "/(¤&%( with us for now the changes are definitely there but we cannot see them too clearly because of NR because the noise details were excellent without the NR.

Sort of, I do not like it causes issues with EV stays open and freezes everything and you gotta press two times to close the EV and the menu, it makes more sense to connect it to AEL which is never used by me and probably no one else or even the Fn, I am going to try remapping them when I get home.

Do you know if its possible to change the key for the menu? I actually use the EV button and changing it to something else in camera seems more like a hassle when I am already so used to it and the symbol for it is there, I would want to change the menu button to either Fn or AEL as I never use those ever. Do I just copy paste the commands for the AEL and EV_EV files in the hack??

Does anyone know if there is a way to get the picture profiles in NX1 as LUT's? Or whether if I had like a colour chart, I could shoot it with the various picture profiles and turn them into a LUT, would that be possible? Reason why I am asking is because the picture profiles do not apply on RAW image only JPEG's and the JPEG engine in the NX1 and NX500 sucks a lot its not like Canon or Nikon which gives beautiful JPEG quality. Another reason is to apply them to GammaDR video, I got a colourchecker I was wondering if there is a process no matter how hard to get the correct colour information from the picture profiles and turn them into a LUT, I know you can grade to those colours but I rather avoid that as much as possible because its extremely time consuming to get the colours even 90% correct and then when I have like 15 different profiles I want to turn into LUT its consuming a lot of time, if anyone know an easier way it be cool to store the picture profiles as LUT's. EDIT: I went on the big web and found something that would work my way, maybe its of interest to you guys? Depends on how it is, if the card is so hot you get burns you probably should just stop with whatever you are doing imao. They do not ship outside the Nordic countries, the Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Icelandic Komplett only ships to their respected countries despite Komplett being in Norway you cannot buy from DK site to Norway for example you gotta go to Komplett.no and same for Sweden, Komplett.se Technically the NX500 is cheaper on eBay brand new because you got the VAT you have to apply in Scandinavia, if you get the seller to ship it as a gift with no price tag on it, you can sneak it through the import check without paying a VAT for anyone thinking this is wrong, our governments have enough cash they just waste it anyway.

Christ the NX1 and NX500 shoots some truly sexy colours with the various picture profiles, I am going to use them way more from now on imao. Almost brings me back to the film, you just shot it and did not care much about the colour because it looked pleasant to begin with.

- On my NX1 there is something called Framing Mode which is an automatic compensation mode also smart range+ does funky stuff with the exposure as well. Remember to turn these completely off unless you actually want to have auto exposure on. - NX500 can achieve pretty flat profile in video with regular settings, I recommend: Normal Picture Profile = R1.00 G0.95 B1.00 | -10 Sharpness | -10 Contrast | 16-235 OR 16-255 | Master Pedestal +8 (master pedestal increase or decrease the black levels so with +8 that means you got 9-255 or if you got +15 you got 1-255)

Okay thanks I was a bit unsure. I will try it, I started just shooting with the picture profiles in the camera and I got some pretty great images out of it, I will use the master pedestal more now that I actually know it affects the 0-225 range

Yeah I hear a lot of people talk about the motion cadence and motion overall in video improved with higher bitrate, I cannot seem to replicate this on my camera for reasons?? But my AMD card have smooth video motion that just kicks in automatically whenever a video plays I am not sure whether that is removing it or something or perhaps I am looking at the wrong things? Do anyone have an example?

I thought the master pedestal only made blacks grey if you increased them or blacks darker if you decreased it?

Does Resolve work better with HEVC in terms of grading than Adobe SpeedGrade does? Because I have serious performance issues with SpeedGrade with HEVC I am going to assume its because the HEVC was not properly implemented with SG. I almost found it easier to just grade in After Effects or Photoshop and export a LUT for Premiere and apply it and then do all the smaller adjustments in Premiere itself.

It could be, I do not see any reasons for having the RAW on the phone so I have not used it for the NX500 but I have used it on the NX1 multiple times and it gives me JPEG's and RAW which is what I set it for, but it just waste space for me so I only keep JPEG's on the phone in case I must send it. Do your iPhone use NFC? I always connected via NFC perhaps using Bluetooth could cause the issue?

Weird, I get raw via Android Samsung Camera Manager, could be something wrong with your settings? I am pretty sure both apps are the same I get an option to choose either JPEG, RAW or both. But then again there is like two Camera apps for the NX1 and NX500 on the Android.

NX500 is no longer in production, its discontinued. Framing issues? You mean crop in 4k? That is still present aye. 2.5k mode is in experimental phase as far as I am concerned its probably a bit far from being ready to let people install it just yet but do not take my word on it, its being worked on. Bitrate increase works, its stable if you do it right I can attest as I have tested it myself and the biggest quality increase is seen in the 1080p footage. Speedbooster is something the manufacturers of the specific adapter brands have to make, with the discontinuation of the NX1 and NX500 I just do not see that happen anytime soon. NX500 feature M - Manual mode so you have control over the exposure if you set it to the right settings. NX500 is cheap, its good, it does what you want, the only issue is the fact there is a serious lack of glass for this camera, the adapter selection are all non-electronic so that means no autofocus, stabilisation whatsoever. If you are looking for good adapters with electronic support and speedboosters you are better off with the G7. Just keep in mind the G7 cannot touch the NX500 in image quality both stills and video, MFT vs APS-C the NX500 will win hands down for the quality of the stuff it takes and shoots, G7 have mic input, the NX500 does not its a bit tricky to get the mix to work on the NX500 you need the Samsung ext mic for it which uses the active hotshoe on it.

You can link the footages to After Effect and Apply Colour LUT, but I am pretty sure I remember there being a Lumetri tool in Premiere allowing you to use LUT's, I could be mistaken my memory is not very good of that program its been some time now. https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/926009 The other way to do this would be to get CC 2014 - 2015 through, lets say. Sometimes one just have to question what insanity Samsung went through to make it so damn hard to just disable that NR, even if HEVC is a lets just say not the best codec out there for a camera but even with NR off the differences are night and day imao, it still wont be glorious but Samsung should have stopped being so childish and just given us the option to turn this off I remember quite early a lot of NX users asked for this, we been ignored ever since about it. Despite them pushing out the updates they never included an option for disabling NR in video mode.

I can confirm that after testing the newest x265 and even the HEVC that comes with Premiere Pro CC 2015, the HEVC still smooths out details and it does it even at high bitrates. I tested several special videos I made with various grains like film grain and ISO grain including various gradients, the fine grain details becomes mosquito noise when there is a huge amount of it, when there is little noise/grain it simply smooths it out which makes me believe there is a built in noise reduction in HEVC which I cannot find in the codec settings I use Hybrid Video Converter which is a very complex GUI for video codecs and no such settings exist and therefore its uncontrollable I also tried various block sizes but had little effects on the noise details. Grain setting seem to improve upon this a little but its non existent in Adobe Premiere and the Grain setting is pretty much unique to x265 at this moment. I can post results here if anyone is interested otherwise I wont bother, I can upload the various HEVC files, they are not very large. Funny enough I compressed a 2GB prores file to like a 7mb HEVC with acceptable detail loss. It seems 720p HEVC do just fine with bitrates all the way down to 500kbps but I recommend 750kbps or 800~ 1080p seems to do fine with 1000kbps but 1500kbps is recommended, avoid HEVC if you want fine details because it really smears them out even at 100mbps. Also the Adobe HEVC is God awful, I would say its almost on pare with DivX's HEVC codec and that one is just plain shit, if anyone has dealt with DivX files in the past they used to be extremely popular on the internet back in the days like 6 - 8 years ago, you will know what I am talking about...

The way HEVC works is definitely contributing to macroblocking and the NR specially which is present even at low 100 ISO. I tested HEVC extensively by converting my huge 400GB Pokémon in original Japanese to 750kbps HEVC. I did probably hundreds of tests and this was back when the X265 was quite young I also tested the H265 in Adobe Media Encoder CC 2015, same issues as always it seems to cause macroblocking in dark areas I also tested a 1080p version with fine grain option of the first episode of Pokémon and HEVC smears the details away, its gotten slightly better with more modern releases but NX1 has old HEVC from 2014 unless they have updated it via firmware which is possible but even then its still out of date from today's versions. Interesting enough I found 8bit saves grain details more than 10bit does which is funny. Not saying recording is same as encoding but HEVC is designed for compression and not for details. When you go higher in bitrate the point of saving space becomes completely lost as H264 10bit seem to perform as good if not better, and this is witnessed in cameras like Nikon which has under 100mbps H264 yet produces beautiful images with very high dynamic range and good shadow details.

Thanks mate, I cannot wait for the 60mbps replacement for 25fps 1080p as it seems 1080p is the only one substantially benefiting from bitrate increase at least to the eye. Nice work non the less, you deserve many shekels and gratitudes! EDIT: I am a fool, I should have looked in the zip before making haste posting a comment, 60mbps pro added for both NX1 and NX500 also HQ.

Aye, I agree but initially there is a difference between low resolution JPEG's with normal compression selected versus 2160p video with the same settings from my tests. Clearly, JPEG's are favouring lower NR levels or are down-sampled differently from video mode. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/samsung-nx1/samsung-nx1HI_ISO_NR.HTM You can see the higher ISO gets for JPEG's we start to see the mosquito noise we experience in video mode. That could mean, that there is indeed more likely a 1, 2, 3 etc setting for NR and probably not truly an off and on switch. Just speculations at my point but I am with you, hopefully its option 1 but even if it was not a much lower setting would still be way better than its currently at because its way too high. I shot a video at 100ISO in 2160p in a room lit by its own lights, it was underexposed perhaps by 0.1 or 0.2 stops and I zoomed in on the dark areas in post, what do I see? No grain details whatsoever, blocky artefacts and mosquito noise and this is ISO100, Samsung what the hell?

I am for MJPEG but imo, the noise reduction in video mode is far more important now as its completely cancerous. Its impossible to film above 800ISO in 1080p without having a video footage that looks like its from 1997. 2160p can do about 1600ISO before it looks awful, the NR seem to cause serious issues in destroying details in dark areas too. Which means you cannot underexpose at all before ending up with ruined images with lost details and the camera overexposes quite easily and balancing this literally requires a degree in science...

It seems only 1080p50/60/100/120 benefits the most out of the bitrate increase, in 2160p I could not notice any difference other than noise being tad finer detailed but its insignificant. Also NX1 HEVC codec is Level 5.1 which only allows for max 160mbps so any higher would be pointless as its not presented in the camera

So from what I shot I noticed there is 'slightly' more details on the noise grain, but the NR is still terrible and it seem to kick in at any ISO. But the grain has definitely become more detailed and less blocky with 160mbps hack, this can even be witnessed in my pictures I posted. Its only slightly it still looks Godawful and post-NR is not helping all too well with it because it causes mosquito artefacts. I also noticed that images can be pushed more in terms of colour grading, a lot more until they start breaking and this is very good news, you can have a lot more contrasty images, shadow details are also slightly better, there is definitely less macroblocking in dark areas but again the NR is the biggest culprit here I think when it comes to crushing details in the dark areas. The bitrate increase definitely seem to have its effect, definitely for 1080p50/100 which seem to benefit the most of it and needed it badly, but again its not noticeable above ISO 1600 because the NR is destroying details hence why I did not notice much different when I first tried it other than that its fine and there is more details per pixels and again this helps in grading a lot, the banding issues seem to have been decreased but they are not gone at this point I am just going to blame it on both HEVC and the NR for the banding issue, GH4 has no issue with banding like this at 100mbps with H264, its clearly a codec issue at this point when JPEG's are doing fine even at normal compression. I never touch saturation settings except for in the normal picture profiles when I need artistic images right out the camera, other than that I only touch contrast and sharpness including adjusting the RGB levels, the pedestal is useless all it does it makes shadow either greyer or more contrasty, I suppose its useful for artistic means but for flat images it does nothing but destroying finer details and make noise more apparent so anyone who want flat images should stay away from the pedestal tool its as useful as it is on the GH4. So thanks again Vasile, I did notice the camera became a tad slower with the 160mbps setting I did not try anything below the bitrate, it takes a while after you start it to react to anything but just a few seconds at most. I read some did not have this issue, perhaps it depends on the SD card.
