  1. The official Canon intro video does demo and talk about this feature specifically as great "for vloggers" with no mention of selfies. Im a C100 and XC10 owner extremely bored of hearing the video-shooting minority complain about the quality of video on Canon's stills cameras. Most people think it's Canon being money grabbing and pushing users to the more expensive Cinema line to get decent video. However the more benign explanation is that it's always been part of Canons ethos to honour existing customers by not making their purchases obsolete every 5 minutes (*cough* Sony *cough*). As you say, stills is their focus outside of the pro video segment. HOWEVER - I do think the graduation of the M camera line to semi-pro with the M5 presents a problem for Canon. Because mirrorless is by nature far more of a hybrid 50/50 stills/video beast. DSLRs fundamentally make pretty awful video cameras, but with mirrorless the form factor etc is pretty much just as good for video as stills (hence the success of the A7S and GH4 and the apparent discontinuation of the 1DC). The line Canon have clearly drawn between DSLRs and their cinema line makes sense, but to omit good video from a true hybrid mirrorless is like Victornox selling Swiss Army Knives that have one side full of sharp high quality tools and the other side full of blunt Chinese knock-off blades. Or like manufacturing a tandem bike frame with no second seat on the back. It doesn't make any sense. The M5 is big news because it means Canon are clearly phasing in quality mirrorless cameras, which has been a big question mark over their heads. But "phasing in" is the key phrase here. They are still market leaders so they have no need to hurry. A big part of the reason they are market leaders is the brand loyalty and respect they command, which comes in part from not ditching existing customers for the sake of winning the latest and greatest spec war.

  6. Why do you want RAW? There are many cameras now that offer better native, non RAW image quality than the 7D ML RAW. And are much easier to use.
  7. No. I decided to go with the Sigma Art zooms and the Canon STM zooms as a complete lens kit. That way it's always a clear choice - image or pragmatism. If I had the 17-55 I'd always be conflicted. If I could only have one set of lenses it'd be the Canon 17-55 and 70-200 f/2.8
  8. I'm more concerned that EF-S lenses work with it. EF-S mount is able to take EF and EF-S lenses. Third party EF adapters, EF Speed Boosters, EF mount cameras, etc, have trouble with Canon's own EF-S lenses because the mount is proprietary. That's also why 3rd party APSC lenses - like the Sigma ART zooms - work fine with Speed Boosters etc - they are EF mount not EF-S
  9. Does anyone have experience of using any of the EOS-M cameras with the official EF adapter? (presumably it's actually an EF-S adapter, right?). How does it work for AF, IS, etc? How secure is the fit?
  10. Yeah I use in-ear buds currently and they're great for isolation, but I want the flexibility of swapping between real and recorded sound quick and easy. Especially important for interviews. Another tick against the HD25's for their swively earpieces. I've half a mind to make my own rain cover for the C100. The rare times I'll use it don't really warrant the £100-£200 they cost.

  13. AKG look interesting. They have some quite nice looking & small bluetooth sets as well. Haven't found any that are neutral monitoring cans yet though. I'll take a closer look. As I do with visuals, I always check my sound on several devices in post (in fact my 7506's are my only decent way of monitoring for "good" sound as I don't have reference speakers). I'm looking for something for location monitoring here though ...

  15. Thanks guys for the suggestions & info. The Bayers are good to know about. I think if I ever want to replace my Sony's I'll look into them further. Because what I need is something smallish/portable for location shooting to replace my earbuds the HD25's are the way to go. Even the DT250's are 100g heavier (240g vs 140g) and bigger than the Sennys. The HD25's seem like the best available trade-off between size, price and quality. The Plus kit comes with velour pads and extra wire, etc, and all the parts are replaceable, so I think they're going to be good for bashing around in my kit bag. I know they're really popular with DJ's but they do get a lot of use in broadcast too so they must be decent for that. They're in the "neutral" ballpark in terms of sound, which is good enough for me. Thanks. Those Panny's are cheap! However they're nearly 900g so out of the equation for me. I too have the MEE M6 Pro buds, and they're great (cheap too!). They've been my location monitors for a while now. But as I say buds are pretty faffy to get untangled etc on a busy shoot when there's a hundred other things to think about. I'll keep them in my bag as backup and will still use them with my XC10. When I'm using a C100 and shotgun, keeping the kit really compact is out the window anyway. The HD25's seem like a good middle ground ... Yeah I keep wondering about trying a bluetooth transmitter/receiver. I actually started a thread on this topic here a while back. Now the iPhone has wireless buds as standard I'm sure it will become much more common in the market. No need to get a special set of cans for that though - I'll probably buy a Taotronics set to plug them into in the near future as they're not expensive.
  16. Hmm yeah the cord is an issue. To be honest I really love and am happy using my Sony 7506's but the cord is a real pain on set, and I'd rather something a bit smaller in terms of the band and pads. Hence my interest in the HD25's. The 770's also look quite large to hang around the neck etc. I'm not desperate for amazing quality sound or perfect isolation - when shooting I just want to be able to hear enough to ensure sound doesn't have any serious issues. Much like visuals - I'm happy using the LCD and EVF on the C100MKII and don't feel the need for a monitor most of the time. They do just enough to make sure all is well with the image and that's enough of a trade-off to avoid the setup and faff of an external monitor. I'm a solo shooter doing doc style stuff for the web so cinema/high-end broadcast quality isn't essential ...
  17. Not that it means much but I'll be using them with a C100MKII and a Sennheiser MKE600 shotgun, which I just got yesterday to replace my NTG2, and the mic is absolutely fantastic. It was only £200 and I really love the sound - I honestly prefer it to both the Senny 416 and ME66. It's a good bit smaller than the NTG2 - same size as the 416 and NTG3, but with an AA battery compartment (and essential on/off switch). Highly recommend it as an affordable but pro-sounding video mic. To my (not very audio-centric) ear it's similar in quality to the NTG3. Build quality is great too.
  18. Great stuff thanks. Will look into them. They look less fussy than the Sennys, which would be a good thing. The Sennys are a bit sexier so I'm slightly seduced by them, plus they seem to be used a lot by the BBC, but at least now I have another candidate to compare them to. Looks like I need to look into Bayerdynamic. Do you use them for shooting as well Mattias?
  19. Thanks. Sounds like you take a similar approach to me. I'll check out those earbuds but I really find untangling the wires a pain when I'm on a proper shoot. I work alone and anything that simplifies the process is a big deal. I think I need something with a headband so they can just hang around my neck when I'm not using them ...

  24. A1ex and the Magic Lantern crew are making headway with hacking the 7DMKII, and tinkering with the 80D at the same time as I believe it uses the same architecture. The 7DMKII would be a fantastic ML camera - DPAF, 60fps native, S35 sensor. It's not really that bad without ML already. It doesn't have the swivel screen but I think I'd choose it over an 80D for the lack of moire, high bitrate/ALL-I codecs etc.

DPAF works really great with the Sigma ART zooms - Sigma have now optimised them specifically for it (I don't know if the 17-50mm 2.8 is though - the 18-35mm didn't used to be optimised but they updated the firmware). However unlike the STM lenses they focus very quickly and are quite noisy. If you're looking to invest in Canon for the DPAF I suggest sticking with Canon lenses mainly. @Inazuma how noisy is the Canon 17-55 2.8 with DPAF on the C100MKII?
