  1. @maxotics ..just that there are serious issues about sex (race, religion too) in the world, that huge companies like Nikon have to be more careful with their marketing department's output. Plus, discrimination is a very real thing in the world, happening all the time, and for various reasons, humanity have to protect minorities and "different" people, not the opposite, or else we are sailing to very dangerous waters. (I expressed a general opinion, not intended to anyone specific).
  2. Just to bring another dimension to the conversation, try not to exclude the rest of the world from your thoughts. women are considered "inferior" to men in the 7/10 of this planet, or worst. In US only, 1 out of 6 females has been raped or being attempted to. In Turkey, the most western of the Muslim countries, women wearing shorter skirts or shorts are beaten up in the streets. In Europe, far right parties are winning electoral power with every new election. There is some form of discrimination against women happening close to you, almost everyday. Let's not pretend that we have solved all humanities issues altogether, and now we just can have a good laugh about it.
  3. As humans are imperfect beings, total and absolute digital things do not cope well with our limitations. @tugela vinyl in the perfect situation (very good turntable, amp, speakers, the print of the vinyl itself, etc) is a better reproduction of an analog recording than digital (e.g cd). It is not such a simple matter, and has to do a lot about physics, and CD ain't a great performer, never was, never will be. A high bit rate digital file can be much better, but still that depends on myriads of uncertainties (recording of music, distribution etc)
  4. http://towerjazz.com/ they are for real and seem to make some China investments. It says they have 3 fabs in Japan "Towerjazz Panasonic", 3 in USA and 1 in Israel. Do not know about the Nikon connection, but I would expect photo/video companies to try to become more Sony-independent, sensor wise. I do not think Nikon can be saved though.. On another note, any video orientated camera must have 10 bit capabilities. It is the new standard. Middling TV sets will be 10 bit soonish, so must most cameras. Everything moves to that direction, and Panasonic proved that it can be done, for cheap.
  5. Crazy world..just ask for his address and phone number to send the filter!
  6. By the way, I read that YouTube accepts H265 files natively, of course they make them VP9, but still it is another post mortem win for the NX crowd.
  7. @ssrdd 4K ain't worth the price (or the effort). I will stop shooting video until 8K cameras cost less than 999$.
  8. After EVA1 and C200 announcement/release, the UMP seems like the best camera. No dual pixel touch focus though.
  9. "Great news! Thanks to you and 873 others, Lukilink has been successfully funded. Your pledge has been charged, funds will soon be transferred to the creator, and they’ll begin working on their project."
  10. @DaveAltizer completely agree. For the occasional raw project, I will rent. Before the C200 announcement I was eagerly awaited for the C100mkIII, then for the middle C200 codec. Now for the FS5mkII! Canon is loosing customers from all over the segments!
  11. These arguments are kind of silly. My NX500 is ready to shoot video on 2 buttons (ON and REC button) on an APS-C 28mpxls BSI sensor and on H265, while my mobile phone is on a flip case somewhere at the bottom of my bag. it is just not an iPhone.
  12. I expect the cameras to be identical. Same bodies, ergonomics, batteries, screens, EVFs. Just different sensors, and orientation (budget-photography-video). If not for the rest, the S definitely has to has 10 bit and 4K/60p. These cameras can bring Sony closer to Canon (and far above Nikon and the m43 crowd) for the photo/video domination, that will be decided in the next decade.
  13. https://www.musicstore.de/en_GR/EUR/Beachtek-DXA-SLR-/art-REC0007753-000 if you are interested on a Beachtek, maybe this is a good deal from Germany.
  14. It is just ignorant to pretend that there are only "camera hardware" issues in this world. This forum is closer to an "eclectic" community than a "mass general discussion's forum", people are free to pass on such a topic though, but in general from time to time it is good to discuss a different subject matter. It makes this forum's experience more complete in my opinion.
  15. Cuda cores, raw processing power and RAM. Pascal GPUs are the standard right now, and for many good reasons (less power consumption= less heat = more durability = less money for cooling options = less noise etc). You also need a more recent CPU that does H265 decoding internally. I would say a 6700 or a 7700(better) with a 1060 GPU (value for money right now, no need for anything less). I do not know about AMD cpus. For financial reasons I went for 6700 and 1060 recently (for an editing laptop). For 600€ more I would have gone for 7700 and 1070 gpu (that is the combo that I consider as best value for money/perforMande right now), but as I upgrade/renew a lot of my equipment and office space, those extra hundreds were needed elsewhere.
  16. The photographer's comments about "people falling" are so cold that is disgusting. He seems really excited about seeing people falling from a scorched building. Completely lost the connection between his subjects and real human emotions. I am not against the photo taken (of course it is history), but the comment on such photos can not be completely technical, the real emotions have to be mentioned and discussed.
  17. It is a problem. I do the same with people's TVs, most do not even know what I am talking about. It is because of "sports" and "action films", for some reason.. There are few that know that something is not right, but do not know exactly what is going on. 1 out of 20, probably. People are ignorant about most things video.
  18. I have used Marantz in the past, excellent choice from the Zoom era, but it seems that has stayed behind a bit. Back then we were using Fostex (the big 2 chanell ones writing to hard drives with excellent mic amps or the LTE version, which was full of issues, sadly) and the classic Edirol ones that they too stay behind after the Roland take over. Neumann is 699euros and Audix 599 in Europe. For that price I would choose Neumann any time. For 499$ (which is the US price for the Audix) I would choose Audix over any other mic (e.g AT). For less I am very pleased with my Oktava, mounted on a blimp has no handling noises. Sound Devices is doing an opening to the masses recently, both in sound AND image, just do not expect Zaxcom to follow soon. Tascam on the other side will follow soon, it is not too late for them. I can see a 701 reduction in price and something similar to F4 really soon (in Tascam time!). What I meant about "12 years" is that I can see someone using a Zoom F4 for so long, 1) because it seems like it is built to last and 2) has most features (and powering options!) that people need from a recorder, being a cameraman or for more specialized sound jobs. My other "time" argument about sound is the mic I use for more than 100 days per year, my Sennheiser 416. The original designs are from the 70s, and I know people that still using the older ones (with phantom power adaptors). I am using other mics per year, but for run and gun, documentary, harsh environment jobs, I always reaching for my 416. It is not the best, but it is the most battle tested amd reliable. Also, most of the post production guys know what to expect and what they get. I am getting the Mixpre6 soon, but I will keep DR680 and DR100mkII as back ups, or specialized jobs. My next mic buy will probably be the MKH50, the oldest of my choices (and biggest and heaviest), but that seems like the best option for my needs. Sound history is full of such examples. I tried Cyclone (the first version) and it is no way as good as the original blimps. I put Sennheiser's as the best and classic Rycotte second. Of course there is Cinella, which is easily the best brand, but for double or triple the price! I remember (and used) the original DPA blimp (it was collapsible) with the first 4017B, amazing design and original idea but not a good performer.
  19. @tugela the last NX camera officially reached the Greek market (an EU state) was NX300. But that was the camera that hooked me on NX. Go figure..
  20. @IronFilm he said it all. What DPA mics by the way? It would be nice for the people here to hear for a brand probably know nothing about. I am in the process of up my game as a soundie, and 4017B and 4018C are really tempting. Other choices are Schoeps Cmit(probably the mini) and the classic hypercardioid, or go to safer waters with 8050/8060 or MKH50/60 (actually MKH50 could have been my preference, but it is the absolutely most expensive in Europe, 1500euros vs 1000 for the 8050). Neumann KM185 is a good, cheaper, indoors mic, the Audix of Europe probably. Mics are like lensee, there are some workhorse ones, but usually you need the right one for the job.
  21. @Damphousse I am very serious about sound; you seem to be 188$ serious about it, which is not much, if you consider that you can keep, and work with such a device, for the next dozen years at least. You can record on your iPhone these days, from dead cheap to DPA expensive, cheap Tascam's like DR 40 do the job, everything is fine.
  22. It is not only a matter of "features" and future needs, even the simple things are not so easily achieved by Tascam. Build quality of the 60/70 is terrible. Power options too, flimsy plugs/unstable micro USB power connection. Terrible Menu system, etc You are going to spend thousands and thousands of euros for 2 lenses (among the dozens you have), and you can't afford 300 more euros for your one and only recorder?! Pro sound for video productions is extremely expensive, you can't even imagine, the F4 definitely is not among the expensive options, but the money, and choice, is yours!
  23. That is not true. There is activity and presence. The worrying part is that the project is all or nothing, and there is a 20.000euros gap and 6 days to go. My understanding is that is a hybrid project, with already built hardware, and some software being made. It is not out of the question to build some for us backers - there are 70.000euros already there, enough to pay for the developments and a 1000 or 2000 batch (there are 800 backers so far) - and sell the rest with some profit. There is potential in this idea, and someone doing it right (better form factor of the device, more features, bigger resolutions) can make substantial profit, as there will be thousands of people ( prosumers, semi pros, pros for backup or second monitor) willing to spend 129$ to make a monitor out of they beloved mobile phones (that they can upgrade every year, or 6 months), than pay 300-500euros for a one buy specialized monitor (with extra batteries/bag/accessories).
  24. All multichannel recorders can do that. That is the point of multi track recording. You can connect 2 wireless lavs, 1+1=2 stereo set up, and most of the times another 2 additional sources (just 3-4 are the usual XLR connections though). Another setup is to have a stereo mix from the main console (you ask politely and in advance the soundie there, it is best to have the proper cables and adapters yourself, but usually they are able to help you) and add another stereo mic (another 2 channels) to have the ambience/atmosphere/room tone (if they are usable of course), or whatever. I seriously suggest the F4. Investing in sound is a much better investment than, let's say, image (e.g TV sets, screen monitors, camera bodies etc). Most of my microphones are almost designs of half a century, my Hi Fi of the 90's is still top notch in sound quality (and power, for partying once in a while!). Just save a couple more hundreds and buy something better, money spend on sound are wise spend. There were a lot of issues with 60 and 70 Tascams, so we kept only the DR100mkII for boom, or minimal set ups, and DR680 for more demanding situations (on the cheap). For serious projects we rent out Sound Devices. F4 is much better in powering options (this is a nightmare for soundies all around the world, not to be underestimated, and batteries for sound are nothing like camera ones, in some projects, I use 30-50 rechargeable AA batteries per day), build quality ( I couldn't decide if the cheaper 60 was better build than the 70, or they were equally bad), probably sound quality as well (even though Tascams are pretty decent for the money as well), usability, funcionality etc etc. So yes, I can not recommend the Tascam 70 with a light heart. 701 is a much better option, but then you are reaching F4 territory, and is a no brainer.
