Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Kisaha replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Panasonic did it right on their full frame cameras too, and they have the smaller "Netflix approved" hybrid camera. I do not know much about the Sigma camera, so I can't comment. -

I was thinking something between 5-6000euros! they can keep their photo specs, we will be taking frames! -

I totally agree with you, but hybrid cameras have been involved from photo cameras. Panasonic is the only one doing it "right" (even on the GH5, it is quite big and heavy for a m43 camera, but it is a video workhorse). I am still waiting for the XC type Canon video camera, let's put the "insides" of the R5 on one, add a fan, and call it a C100mkIII !! -
Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K

..but seriously, who was expecting unlimited recording on 8K raw and whatnot? I don't need almost any of those features, and I wasn't expecting a lot more than marketing tricks and promises. The great thing is that those exotic features work! That is great, they are really there and anyone can use them, for a little while at least; of course there are compromises, but the specs are there. I am more dissapointed about a few "weird" decisions on the R6 though, that is the camera that most interests me, because I would never pay for 45mgpxls (something around 24-30 would be perfect for my needs), 8K (the market just started asking for 4K, and still 1080p is the norm, I could do with 5K or 6K for croping and stuff but it is not huge for me), 4K/120 (I have used 1080p/120f once or twice in my life time. I was working on high speed cameras though for a moon and a half, but that's a completely different story than 120frames). So, what I really need, is most certainly a 3000euros R camera, and not the 4550 one, nor the 2500 one! I probably can do with the R6, it's been so long that I had a Canon camera that I can't wait anymore! this seems like a good enough release for a hybrid and some photo jobs. I will be waiting for the reviews ofcourse, and a couple of more releases, jobs are scarce at the minute and my next ones will be most certainly sound jobs, so I need a few more wireless sets first. I am taking a quote from @thebrothersthre3 and I condlude that the video specs interest more "hobbyists and niche users", which these days can support big releases on their own, most of those are youtubers/influencers and all these new "jobs". If you ask a little kid, they do not want to be doctors and engineers anymore, a youtuber is a lot nicer, and if they can do it on 8K then they have their amps on 11, while we are still at 10.. EDIT: I saw Tesla mentioned somewhere... https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2020-06-24/new-j-d-power-quality-survey-tesla-in-last-place-dodge-and-kia-tie-for-first -

This is definitely taken by the Sony book. For years Sony was selling cameras only from the spec lists with terrible ergonomics, terrible battery life, overheating and the such and they reached No2.. Canon decided to play "dirty" and put everything they had on a camera, which isn't even that "expensive". I believe it is a good marketing strategy for them, but for me, it gives more points to Panasonic, as the most true and honest manufacturer out there. It overheats? then make the biggest and heaviest m43 ever made (GH5) because it has to be a workhorse. We have to make a full frame hybrid video workhorse? put a fan into one if need be. That is an incredible approach, especially back in the Alpha and alpha days but even still... Another point I want to make, is that there is a new business model out there, that they do not need workhorse cameras anymore. Some people can just use any camera producing small clips, or youtube videos and earn their bread (and butter). For me, it is unacceptable that a camera may ,or may not, overheat on a job (even FS7 do rarely and its a huge thing on set), but I see a lot of the younger generation that have no problem with that. -
Canon 9th July "Reimagine" event for EOS R5 and R6 unveiling
Kisaha replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
If anyone wants a video workhorse then the R5 doesn't seem to fit the bill. I am quite serious when I am wondering about the GH6, the GH5 wasn't perfect, but it was a non-nonsense video tool, pretty reliable and able to bring food to the table without asking the sun and the stars. The only issue I had with m43 was always the ISO capabilities, GH5S solved that as well, what you didn't have, was a true hybrid capable to be excellent on everything (GH5S was mainly a video camera, let's face it, and GH5 was quite behind it in low light). If the next GH6 is close to what we want it to be, it can be THE hybrid camera to beat. We delivered a lot of TV episodes on the biggest TV networks here with GH5 and 12-100mm Olympus, we never had any real issue and that was the fastest and smallest combo we could use for some type of jobs usually on scorching heat (green house effect hits the Mediterranean really hard..). Sony without any 10bit option and overheating/battery issues was never an option for this kind of jobs, we tried GH5+Olympus lenses, and we did fine. -

In Greece the VAT is 24%, no difference. I haven't tried buying from U.S for years now because the custom office is very strickt here, there is a huge delay of stuff not from EU (because they check most of them) and they charge accrodingly custom taxes + VAT, which can be even more than the retail price. A friend send me a second hand lens from Canada a couple of years ago, and I had to pay 50euros to get the gift from my friend! or else they would have send it back.. It is a harsh new reality that "pro" equipment will cost a lot of money, maybe this is the price to pay for "doing business", but on the other hand, there will be solutions to this problem.. We have to see the cameras first though. I mean..you have to see the cameras first! -

U.S is just 328.000.000 there are 7.500.000.000 others using different currencies. 445.000.000 people buy in Euros, and the price is near (probably) 4.500euros (5.150$). -

I am not sure if you read my post, but the first indication of the price in EU is 4.549euros, that is 5.155$!! For me personally, I wanted the R6 to be my "perfect" hybrid. 20megapixels will cause pause to some people and did for me. When I am buying a hybrid, I want to be 50% photos and 50% video, or else I am buying a video camera for the R5 money. I will be waiting for the first reviews ofcourse, maybe I can live with that, we will see. -

"A French retailer lists the Canon EOS R5 price at €4,549." The euro price will be very difficult to digest. That's 1000$ difference. I was hoping the R6 was a 24-28mgpxls camera for some reasons. -
Ι do not have a FB account. Forums are much better for me. Kai is ok. He is really ok. The conspiracies are 10% funny, and I give him another 20% because he is a specialist on the subject. Gerald, I have seen a few videos, I do not have really an opinion about him. If I had to choose, I would prefer Kai for a pint or two in the local pub, and that means a lot to me!

hiprster, or us, or we are the hipsters?! That's what I am thinking, I believe they will go a different route. XT cameras have gone a long way to be as competitive as they are right now. Now we need a new (or the X-H) line completely video orientated. It doesn't have to be exactly a hybrid camera, we are full of those! Fuji makes small but steady steps, they seem to be dedicated to their end goal, which is survival, I guess!
-
another interesting test from my favorite Korean youtuber Actual comment at 03:50: "I did 3 tests. What survived the harsh test was only the NX1 that was shooting these cameras." I would like to see Fuji give as something more video orientated. I am not sure why they haven't yet but I believe it is coming.
-
Ah! that is the case when you leave your trustworthy NX1, you change a camera every year! I went the middle way, bought a P4K, and still using the good ol'NX cameras! Have you sold all your NX equipement, then? What do you think in general NX1 vs X-T3 and now the X-T4?

No useful info over there for some time now, ages; still watching some of Chris and Jordan though, these guys are just likeable! -
what a film..what a director..
-
this is so true. I am avoiding using IBIS even on the GH5 jobs, BUT directors and producers look at me very weirdly when I ask a few seconds to open a tripod.. I know "big-ish" productions that do not include tripods anymore.. IBIS is a tool, and a cinematic "phrase", but it is not a panacea, it is not the "whole book".

How do you know what was going on in the 70s?! Are you a time traveller?! To be part of the industry was a life long commitement and needed 100% dedication to that. At least that was the case at the late 90's I started working, and the stories I was hearing from the experienced people. I was learning from real DoP that were working 10-15 years as assistants, I was booman to soundmen that are now 60-70 years old, and still working by the way. In the comedy drama series I was this year, the other soundman (we are 2 different groups working simultaniously) was my sound man on a film feature film back in 2000something (2000, 2001, 2002, have no clue!). There was a certain amount of respect, and the job was demanding, a mistake or two was critical for your future professional career. Now everyone is "educated" by youtube, so young people's standards today are what a 15 year old guy, or a 17 years girl are doing in their youtube channels. People are used in youtube, phone videos, reality tv, terrible camera shake, there are NO basic rules of photography or videography, everything is ok..Only reality tv and phone videos are bringing the total value of videography/cinematography to an all time minimum.. Most of them do not care about mistakes, or their lack of knowledge or experience. Of course that is not 100%, but still the percentage of BAD young professionals these days is staggering. If I try to advise, or talk to them they just do not care, or being defensive, or offensive! Just a few listen, and usually they are the ones stick and earn more money. At least, I have "earned" the right to talk them down to earth from time to time, for the good of the shooting day, and the job in general, but this in TV productions, on lesser jobs, I just do not care, or I am not expected to say anything.
-
Higher standard is NOT expected. People are influenced by youtube and instagram these days, or from the 1 bazillion reality shows they are watching on Mtv and 1000 other networks producing crap. The only thing they want from their photos, is more bokeh. Shoot 5000, crop 200 of them, add some "filters" and you got a job done. 20 even 30 years ago we were going 1-2 or even 3 days per week at the cinemas to catch up with the latest and greatest. Now cinema seems to be based only on technical aspects. Youtube is the big educator of YOLO generations, and all the main professionals are NOT there, there are just young kids, doing a few weddings, and then suddenly are the world's experts about film making! I have worked with some of the previous generation here and abroad, and not one of them is on youtube!
-
Don't make this a wedding thread please. Make a new one if you need info about it. @thebrothersthre3 it is pretty simple, if you have to do something really important, it doesn't have to be an opera, even a traditional dance group can be important, then you have to watch a rehearsal of the show/live performance or better, the prova generale, maybe you have to keep notes as well. Pre production is part of the job description!
-
Ι paid a fairly experienced camera operator to do a little camera job for me of a traditional dance night, almost a 50 years old guy, with a steady camera on a tripod for the wide, and another on a monopod for closer looks, and the footage is terrible! He missed almost all the things he should capture. He started as a photographer, and turned to video after the 5DMKII revolution, and obviously never got it... Changing framing way too fast. Moves were terrible and non usable. I have some experience now with music and live performanes, and I believe I am quite good (I am a trained musician anyway), but some things are just common sense, I mean, if the goddamn guitarist is soloing, just zoom in a little, don't go to the drummer! He missed stuff like that! Some of those lives (especially with dance groups) I put 4-6 cameras. It is a nightmare after to edit of course, but it can be impressive, and it is a lot better and different than the usual stuff. I also charge a bit more, but not what I should.
-
I would like to hear more from you, as you are a fairly young guy into the industry, more connected with the 20 something generation, and you seem to have a good and sensible approach of things. This new mindset of "just do it", as you mention above, is what interests me more. Education seems to be not only irrelevant, but a negative - and I heard that a lot - especially in the wedding scene, most of the people are "I didn't study anything relative, but that is a good thing, because I am free to create on my own terms", I heard that a lot. Then, if you study, or work your way up, is a huge minus, why to waste effort, sweat, time and money when you can go straight to the top?! Thanks for your honest comment, and I would like to hear more for the YOLO generation - as I call it. I am a father myself, and there is not even one chance that my kids are not going to learn, or read, a lot in their lives! I guess I am old school, but old school is good sometimes. Life is not easy, but if you try reasonably, it can be good fun!

VIDEO IS EASY that is what they will tell you! Real life facts that I am thinking about a lot the last couple of weeks 1) friend wants to be a youtuber, she wants to learn everything about editing, equipment, lights, sound, and everything in between. Whatever I learned in 20+ experience and a few degrees, she wants in one afternoon. 2) we have a small team, doing internet videos, try to fit 15-20 small ones per day of shooting, the team is a DP with 30+ years of experience at the highest level, me with 20+ years, and our editor 15+ years at the highest level (for our country the highest level, don't get me wrong) and we have a young guy helping building his experience now. At one time, the 25 years old gal doing social media for the client, comes to see. She stayed for an hour, she walked all the time with high heels, played with her phone, and the first thing she said, "I want that to be like this", after half an hour trying to explain her that what she wanted wasn't applicable in this prouction, she left..we lost almost an hour because of her and we missed our brake because we didn't have time for the rest. 3) on another such video, same team, another girl supervising social media for the client, never present on set, send a text "maybe it is better for me to edit the videos, what program do you use so I can watch some tutorials today and do the videos in the weekend?", that was the actual text message... 4) the last, a lot, years, I have met a lot 22-25 year old kids introducing themselves as "DoP" or "director". I have never heard, "I am trying to do camera", or "I would like to be part of a production". 5) In the past, I had a director, that withouht being in the busniness, through social networking, connections, luck, and very low salary has become a director! Knowns nothing about anything, but through youtube videos and director's masterclasses believes he is one of the best in the business! Very proud that became a director without experience and no studies, really having no clue at all. I can't even explain how terrible is to become something you do not deserve, and there is no direction ever, mostly the shooting was happening because of some experienced actors, the DP and me. Crazy stuff..There are others like him coming. 6) wedding video and photography...what a joke..I have met policemen, DJs, wood cutters, military personel, and so many different people, that occasionally, or more professionally are doing weddings. So many of them, are bringing their wives/girlfriends (I have seen that in video mostly), and boyfriends/husbands ( I have seen that in photography mostly) to do second photo camera, or video, or second/third video. So many bad experiences on weddings, I should write a comedy book. 7) we were discussing with an old DoP about instagram recently ( I do not have, I am not familiar at all with it), and he was telling me that 8/10 photos on instagram have a crazy horizon at the back for no particular reason at all..Of course there is a reason, 101 in photography isn't needed anymore. So, video is easy, just press the RED button.
