I am not comparing a mobile phone with a tiny sensor, but 1) an APS-C sensor on a 2) pro body camera (only Fuji and Samsung ever had a mirrorless APS-C pro body, in case you haven't noticed, so they are pretty much comparable) If you and others, can't see the significance here, then buy an Arri to call and text your friends and family, and shoot films with your phone. Semantics aren't your strong field of science it seems. Too pity, because they are very important to film makers. I am wondering how many hybrid cameras and systems you have changed since 2014, for other members, I am pretty sure they have changed at least 3. Of course it's your money, if I was rich enough, I would happily own every known camera system to humanity, live your myth in Fuji land and be merry.

@Inazuma it is highly subjective, of course, I am not in front of my proper monitor, but in everyone of the above scenes I would go with the Sony (I can't even believe I am saying this!). The AF seems better also. In the first one you agree that something's going on, and in the last one with the too much green (that is obvious in other landscape shots in the video as well, and the blue is very different in those cameras, just wasn't sure what was the optimal choice, amd didn't have more time to spend, that is why I didn't comment). Sometimes there is a green overcast, as it is very obvious in the image that says "Face Detection" against the white background. Anyway, thanks for trying to explain, I am more surprised with the improvement of the A7 series to be honest, wasn't trying to say anything bad about the Fuji. I like Fuji very much, since forever, and I want them to survive, but it is hard earned money, and I can't change systems every 2 years. It seems that you realized certain shortcomings of the camera also, and you moved to the A7iii already, and that explains a lot I guess. I am - very slightly - excited about using the A7 in a couple of weeks, something I haven't feel for a Sony since the production company I was working brought the first EX1 camcorders in my country!

Oh, really? I never explored that idea with the JVC LS300, we almost do not use it anymore in the company (so many GH5, I step on them!). You manually crop the sensor and it is ok? Pros/Cons? I have missed those old B4 lenses, very comfortable to work with, a parfocal lens with a servo motor is my next quest (Canon 18-80 probably, but with what camera?!).

You.Are.Unlimited! You should have a disclaimer on those "Do not try this at home", or something, people can get hurt!

I couldn't disagree more. I agree with @jonpais big time here, I couldn't describe it better, "miserable results" he said. Certainly have seen great footage from the X-T2. Is X-H1 different than the X-T2? Is the A7iii that much better than the previous A7 cameras? Especially in skin colors the Fuji is a mess here. It is also noticeably softer; look at the area under the eyes of the girl and the details of her skin (and she has a lot of them!). I have seen some similar results on another video posted here, with some people playing some music, can't remember exactly, but I was waiting for a more serious test to comment. Now I comment. It can be user error, but these guys seem to know what they are doing, or they are paid by Sony to eliminate the competition, I do not know what to say. General comment: The article in mirrorlesscomparison goes in great depths, by the way. Great stuff, but in the crop diagram at 00:50seconds, it says "A7iii - 1.2Xcrop (4K 30p, that is pitty, by the way, but no biggy, considering the price), "A7iii - S35 mode (1.5X crop), but then it says "X-H1 1.17X crop", and it is close to full frame, isn't this 1.5X, and an additional 1.17X crop? Isn't this a bigger crop than the A7iii's S35 mode?

How come? I think no one ever mentioned compression methods here. It does 10bit 4:2:2, 200Mbps Long GOP also. Doesn't that count? In anyway, the GH5S codecs are the most ever on a hybrid camera, no one can beat Panasonic on codecs, except BM of course, but it isn't here yet, and is hardly a hybrid, if at all.

What a wonderful small combo (camera+lens) and what an amazing nation. Had some great time there, and some of my best friends living in Edinburgh, still. If you get bored of haggis (I liked it!), in Portobello there is the Greek Artisan Pastry, amazing food, get a spanakopita and walk on the beach with a coffee!

That is my impression also, while I have seen terrible stuff with the Sony's. This summer I will be working a lot with A7iii and A7sII and I am not sure what to expect. We will run some tests in a couple of weeks I guess, but I would like to be prepared. Can some A7sII and A7iii guys comment on the color science, and give any tip using them together?
-
Great test video by the way, excellent job. Is it me, or the skin color of the Fuji is way off? I do not believe I am saying that, but color seems better on the Sony, skin tones especially. Does the A7iii have the same color science as the A7Riii? Are they much better than the A7 mk II series cameras? I will be working with Sony a lot this summer. Ibis, RS and codec goes to Fuji though.

GH5S does 10bit 4:2:2 400Mbps I believe.

I haven't seen the X-H1, but I do not believe that Fuji have great ergonomics in general, but if you own one already, and you like what they got, then probably you like them ergonomics. GH5S probably is the best in ergonomics, among them, but I judge from the GH5, which I believe are the same. Video wise, GH5S again is the best, not even close, codec wise, and tool's wise, no external recorder needed and already has most tools, so no monitor needed either, and that helps a lot saving money and not carrying other things around. I am not sure about A7iii color science, in every review I can see yellow skin and the such, it is mentioned in some of those reviews, the other two are much better, and the GH5S is the best Panasonic hybrid ever in color science, very close to Canon color (per a few of the reviews, which are posted on the GH5S thread) and very different from the GH5 which is "greener". You have to consider the ultra wide shots that you may need thought. The 15mm isn't going to be that wide on a speedboosted m43 camera, but if you want to shoot stock footage, the best possible quality you can get, is very important (GH5S).

I do not doubt you in any sense. I just can't comprehend the issue! Why do you not try with everything in manual? Including ISO? I would guess that AUTO ISO can do things to the image, auto things! I bet Merilyn was much worse, but with similar ending as the NX. Their "bosses" end them inexplicably and at their peak.

Obviously, 2014 to 2018 are 4 years away.

People easily overlook that the champion in sales is APS-C, and smaller than full frame sensors in general. Not a lot of people want to carry around big, heavy and quite expensive lenses. It is good that Nikon is finally preparing a full frame mirrorless, but I would prefer to see an APS-C body. I seriously have no desire for a full frame camera at all, and I am not the only one (sales!).
-
Don't get me wrong either, I truly respect Fuji (still own some of their digital cameras a bridge and an ultra portable, I loved them that much), but these things happen when a particular spec is an afterthought, a couple of years later. I really applaud their try though, I imagine how happy you are given some features weren't there when you bought the camera. What do you thing about the 120f image quality?
-
@Django As I said, my cameras do 120 from 2014, and other cameras have gone to 180 and 240 frames already. Admittedly, 120 is good enough for most uses, I usually shoot 60p anyway. I am curious about people's slow mo tests here. and, everything the X-T2 gets, makes the H-X1 a weaker buy.
-
You realize how weird that sounds in 2018?! My 2014 cameras do that. Have fun!

The Peau costs 600$, even more expensive than the already expensive Hero6. GoPro just failed, capitalism is all about move, and finding new markets. GoPro sold a camera to most people would buy a camera, and that was it. How many GoPro cameras would one change in his life? @kye still uses the Hero3. A lot of my friends also. The TV show I am working are staying with the Hero5 at the moment, because they spend a couple of thousands euros for GoPro cameras when they were new and we do not expect vast differences when mounting on cars. Yi, and other Chinese manufacturers, have a vast Asian market of half the global population to sell, and they sell action cameras for 49.9$, which a teen in Delhi can buy, up to 180$ (or less, in the Chinese market) for a top action camera like the 4K+. The parent company, Xiaomi, also makes vacuum cleaners, bags, and recently shoes, they make everything, so they do not have just one market and one single pony. They are literally millions of people buying action cameras every year, they just do not care about GoPro anymore.
-
Isn't the price kind of steep? 430euros here, and the Peau someone suggested is 600$, and I bet the next Yi will be similar for almost half that money. The Yi 4K+ which arguably is better than the Hero5 is 230euros, 45% less than the Hero6. Imagine you want to buy a car that costs 30.000$, and you got a similar one for 16.500$. That is a substantial difference for someone still using his Hero3, because of financial reasons and justification of the price. The aforementioned Sony is an interesting proposition also.

Sorry, but I do not understand what are you talking about. I use full M on video, and I get full M. Are there other people having similar issues? and of course I never get the "greenies". I have 2 NX cameras and using them professionally for 2-3 years now (the one, the other was bought used almost 2 years ago), sometimes for 5-6 recorded hours on heavy work days. If you have ISO in AUTO, doesn't that compensate for the other settings on your image?

The Olympus is 1350euros here, most definitely it will cost more than 1499USD! The OIS is pretty good already. m43 used to be everything about size and weight, but their latest flagships forgot about it, and they went full on. GH5 is bigger and heavier than even full frame dSLRs, there is no reason to hold zoom lenses on the old miniaturization mantra, when you have such a big and heavy body. My opinion about size/weight body vs size/weight lens ratio is that they have to be analogous. What I mean, if you have a full frame zoom like the 70-200, which is a very common lens on many people's arsenals, the ergonomics of the camera have to be capable for such lenses, that is why I was founding the A7 cameras very bad ergonomically. Same with m43, their 35-100 zoom lenses were small and light, and that was a great advantage of the system against large and heavy dSLR cameras. Personally, my sweet spot is APS-C, and specifically, the aforementioned NX with the unique S lens.

This is 84.90euros in my country. This is seriously an action camera for the masses. Comes with a box full of accessories inside. Is it as good as a GoPro6, or even 5? Of course not, but most people will be happy to spend a lot less than 100euros (this can be an impulsive buy for a lot of us, even my I consider 84.90euros for a nice little gadget a very fair price), and it comes with 2 years European warranty (German company it seems). @kyeWaterproof mobile phones can, but it is not advisable to swim with. Even action cams without housings have to be cleaned, and properly dry out, but you can shoot somethings on the beach (not inside the sea, salt is killing everything, even human hearts!), near a pool, or on a river (canoe-cayak!). I would call them splashproof.

I work occasionally for a car TV show (for a lot of years), so we use GoPro cameras all the time. We are still using the 5 though, as the production company doesn't find the difference substantial to invest on 4 new GoPro cameras. I can only compare with the 5. The Yi cost 240euros here, GoPro5 is 80-100euros more, the 6 is around 420euros, a substantial difference for sure. Image quality? I dare to say the 4K+ is a bit sharper with better color reproduction. GoPro codec tops to 60Mbpes, if I remember right, and Yi is double that. The 5 is 4K/30, the Yi 4K/60. I am not sure about ISO performance, but I consider this to be silly, as everything out of a GoPro, and similar action cameras, are terrible in low light situations. I never said that action cameras are a terrible idea, just that they have terrible quality. I disagree completely with your social comment, obviously you are referring to habits and a social reality created by the decades that I already mentioned. The world stayed on a false state of abundance for many decades (and that started just after World War 2). After the last financial crisis, and for other reasons (like the obesity that you already mentioned, and other health issues, plus the collapse of the ecology of the planet because of overpopulation/over-materialism/over-polution) people started having different life styles and active lifestyles, ecology, and better quality of food, are gaining traction in western societies. Do you remember buying any organic food in the 80's, or 90's? How many of your friends were doing summer/winter extreme sports in the 90's? Were you ever taking your bike to work? How many of your people around you were smoking 10-20 years ago? The market of such cameras is quite big, that is why Olympus, Sony, Xiaomi, Ricoh, Kodak, DJI, GoPro, Nikon, even Leica (X-U) has one, and a few myriad smaller camera makers and brands are making waterproof/action cameras. Also, you can buy a cheap plastic housing, or a specialized better one and make whatever camera waterproof. I live on a 10.000.000 country with 13.700Khm of costline, China has 14.500, to put that on perspective, and also a lot of mountains and ski resorts. Literally, everyone under 40 years older, have used an action cam, and most of those own one, those are even ok with their older GoPros, or they are buying a cheap Chinese alternative, with less than 100euros. Edit: My comment about the mobile phones, was that the image quality and specs of modern mobile phones, even mid-tier ones, are similar with most action cams, it is a device most already own, a lot of models are already waterproof (so, splash proof really, I wouldn't dive with my mobile phone), so they can be used for a lot of the light things that people were using GoPros some years ago.

Panasonic CM1 has 1", 28mm lens, 2.8f (and 4K I think!). Thickness is 15mm for the phone, and 20mm where the camera is, and 24mm with the camera on. The mobile phone's sale war, will bring us more of those, soon. Physics can not be beaten (yet) and for better performance all those companies will need a bigger sensor soon.

Yes! It has to be online, or else it never happened! So it is a great time in history for little cameras, easy to carry and post online immediately! Mobile phones have the advantage of being in one's pocket (or bag, or purse, or jacket) already, but action cams have their market, for sure,. A lot of my friends own an Olympus TG camera, the tracker is interesting, maybe the next one will be the one (as of now they are a bit behind top action cams like GoPro 6 and Xiaomi 4K+ in video specs and image quality, but they are cheaper as well). http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/tough
