Suddenly noone can shoot without IBIS, RAW and dozens of thousands of ISO!
-
I agree, but I also believe that the GH5/S caused a lot of discomfort to them already, the Pocket and the rest, are just the nails in the "coffin". Of course their large (huge) user bases (and lenses sold) give them some time to react, but the industry is pushing for innovation, and GH5 was the first - very important - modern release.

there are literally unlimited monitoring options in the market. For the absolute minimum, one can buy a 3.5" - 10" Raspberry pie monitors starting from 20$, and there is a tally telling you if it recording or not, then cheap specialized monitors (not very good ones) start from 100$ and you got an ok Feelworld for less than 200$, and the list goes on, until you go to Focus and Atomos territory. There are 11" ones going for 80-100$ (1080p) that I posted a link on the monitor thread yesterday. The selfie monitor doesn't have to be the best quality, you - usually - need it to judge basic things, and you can go bigger (7"?) with these Chinese ones to help, if you are standing 1-2m away from the camera. If you shoot it in front of your face with an ultra wide lens, then those 3.5" IPS monitors I mentioned (I am waiting mine to arrive this, or the next week) are sufficient to judge framing and what not. I got it from amazon.de for 40euros (shipping+ acrylic case) and another 10-15euros for a miniscule 2500mAh credit card power bank. If you shop from ebay or aliexpress, all together reach hardly 30-35$.

Interesting for sure, and H.265 main 10 profile. For most people that is more useful than raw and whatnot, if it wasn't for the Pocket, that would be the most amazing camera release this year, but after the pocket, everything changed(and can record prores LT for lesser projects)! I am wondering, what are the big Japanese corporates are thinking after these couple of days?

@zerocool22 Recently I have various issues with older directors, not been able to monitor well with 7", so may in the future I will go to something like this. I am dead serious, too. Directors love screen estate, makes them feel more important somehow (I have seen them love PC monitor screens on set). https://www.ebay.com/itm/11-6-Inch-1920X1080-HDMI-Raspberry-Pi-3-PS3-PS4-WiiU-Xbox360-Display-Monitor/273088525332?hash=item3f95583414:m:mVu0XVF_ZrtcTTUjj8UoZFw The Atomos needs a bundle as well! I got the Focus bundle for GH5. Preferably test both before you choose. The BlackMagic assist looks ok in specs, in real life wasn't anything like the Focus, where everything you put atop your camera (especially a hybrid/Pocket4K) really counts. With the recent announcements, recorders will be an afterthought I guess, the latest Panasonic and BM have everything you need on board, codec wise, and I am sure more will follow.

It's both bigger, and heavier (almost double the weight) from the Focus, and if you don't need the recording thing, it is a lot more expensive too. It is 8bit (+2 FRC) so I am not sure about the HDR thingy (I am not sure, because everyone and their mothers claim HDR compatibility these days), I should probably check HDR on my phone, which is both Dolby and HDR compatible and has a 5.7" screen! Overall, is a great product and with a right price, more appealing than BM 5" for sure, but for monitoring, I would go with the smallest and lightest possible.

This is something of the future, now! I am sure we will find a way mounting the SSDs on the camera (if need be). There are also tiny USBC 3.1 memory sticks that are cheap as chips, easily one can have a couple of 128GB ones in their bags, just in case. Someone asked for old pocket battery solutions, and someone else mentioned rig this camera. My opinion is that while it isn't pocketable, seems like a complete package that needs much less accessories than the previous one to be fully and reliably operational.

Those little Samsungs are amazing though, and the USB-C is as future proof as it gets right now! Does anyone knows the weight? Overal is similar to W and D to GH5 (slightly smaller, but barely) but longer, due to the 5" monitor. Pretty good. BMP4K = 178x96x85mm GH5 = 138.5 x 98.1 x 87.4 mm / 5.45 x 3.86 x 3.44 inch

..and you are working with what, until September? Rent? Isn't this going to cost as well? I really doubt that many people will get them at September, some may - definitely not a lot, and trying to catch up with unlimited pre-orders is not a good omen for quality control. This is not going to be unanswered by the big companies also.

Really? which one?! There weren't any good 5" monitors (for less than 999euros) in the past because I was searching for one the last few years. The Focus is 800nits, which again is a number difficult to reach, and the size and weight, are outstanding. Also the SmallHD touch user interface is truly best in business. The new Focus OLED is 5.5", by the way, but 350nits and 8bit, 255g without battery. Even OEM good panels (ask @BTM_Pix for that!) cost a lot more than 100$ from China factories, so they can't be very cheap.
-
Look at the Focus series, the 5" is ideal, but there are other options if you'd like. 7" is too much for me. It is 173g without a battery, and I can't believe anyone will go lighter than this, any time soon. Oh, and batteries are heavy by the way, no way you can go lighter than this, the aforementioned Feelworld is half a kilo without any battery.

Just keep the GH5, is a good hybrid and it has lost a lot of resale value already, so no need to worry about that! Sell everything except the 20mm, and buy a cheap kit, or the 12-60, and call it a day. You are covered from 24-120mm and you have a modern camera to take you to the 2020s easily. The a6XXX cameras are some of the worst cameras I have use in my life, nothing I liked about them (maybe the 18-105 lens, pretty cool for the price and nice stabilization) but if you go for cheap, then the a6000 is ok for casual photo and a little bit of video. If you want 4K, then the a6300, but the 1080p is really bad, and soon you will get bored of their amateur-ish nature and shortcomings, especially in hot hot Southern Spain! I do not know about the lesser Panasonics, as I have only used the GH series. EDIT: also, as you go up the chain (from a6000 to a6500) as well as just keep the GH5, because the a6500 aren't that cheap either, and you have to check lenses prices.

Sony FS5 II announced with 4K 120fps RAW recording at NAB 2018
Kisaha replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
My previous post was the WHY part, in plain non-native-language English: 1) 40% higher price 2) bigger and heavier body (for more efficient heat dissipation) and still didn't deliver the goods, how do you expect more, from a much cheaper camera, with a lot smaller body and a lot bigger sensor? By the way, no one said anything about the AF, everyone in forums and articles say that is the same as the FS5, so I do not know what are your sources. On a category with hot fresh cameras (C100 is a 2012 camera, and cost much less than the FS5ii, and there is a III imminent for release, but all the rest?) and still a couple of players that haven't opened their papers yet, this is a DOA. and I finished with "This is a mixed release with a so so sensor from the #1 sensor manufacturer.. My impression is that they just added value to Panasonic (Eva/GH5S) and BMUMP cameras, and whatever else comes this year." and that is before the 4K pocket release, a few hours later than my previous comment it is even worst for the FS5mkII. and that is why. -
..of YEARS! I seriously can not follow the thread anymore.
-
It says 200 now, and 400 people looking at it! Saying that, I would never pre-order a camera, ever. From now, till September (probably just before Christmass with all the backorder), is a long way for modern times.

Nothing to see here gentlemen, move along to the Black Magic thread right now! -
Iron Maiden t-shirt on a male model? 1,295$?! Due September ("because we want to be conservative") They did it, that's it, we are all buying one! clap clap clap

Carbon hybrid body! I believe this is a first, amazing! miniXLR and the FIRST ever hybrid, with video first in mind. That is brilliant, I am excited after a long long time! USB C to a Samsung T5?!!?!!?! WTF?!! This seems like a very well thought video hybrid camera. Bravo!

The worst quirk of IBIS is that directors/producers expect me to use it at 100% of the time, and when I ask time to set a tripod/monopod just look me weird and/or with disgust and hate! A7s cameras destroyed the traditional lighting experience for a lot of young people, and sadly I see a lot of young people in the industry forget about tripods, which is my favorite kind of shot, and they loose completely a few letters that consist the cinematic language. Tools are good, abuse of them is terrible.

Sony FS5 II announced with 4K 120fps RAW recording at NAB 2018

So true! That camcorder reminds me (and the pricing is exactly the same) the legendary EX cameras that I spend so much time with them in my youth, but that was almost a century ago! -
True! can be THE small video camera. I do not know about beauty or not, but that body seems very well designed for video work, and the big openings just above the sensor can offer reliable cooling of it and the camera. This maybe the small body camera we were waiting since the 5DmkII revolution. Well done BM, they seem to have learn from their mistakes. What do you mean the GH5 and the (totally different looking footage) GH5s are not usable for serious work?!?! I, and a lot of people I know (I do not own any of those) we have done a lot of serious work with it (TV series, documentaries, video clips, events, e.t.c). Maybe you don't like them, but those 2 cameras have up the whole game a lot, and pushing the industry for the benefit of all of us.

There is a new Adobe version, which I haven't download yet (I have paid dearly updating Adobe apps before! huge problems and late deliveries, almost non deliveries, because of them) and I read that this is a major release (but that's what they said for previous ones too!). Audio was an issue in previous Resolve editions. Izotope is top, I am not sure anyone can reach that, or should (as it is a very specialized program, and it is good to have those!). We will see, I will try the 15 when it is available with a small project in the near future. Adobe disappoints more times than not.
-
I am seriously considering buying into Resolve, Adobe is becoming to expensive for me (editing is my 3rd line of work, I usually work in productions, not post), amd I had huge problems with loosing projects (well known 2017 bug), stupid bugs that I had to rename video extension files and whatever. But a tried Resolve a year ago and it was nothing like a complete one stop solution. And Lumetri was enough for my color skills and needs. I believe Resolve is the future, but maybe not the present?

Sony FS5 II announced with 4K 120fps RAW recording at NAB 2018
Kisaha replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
All of those are irrelevant when you release a mkII version of your entry level cine/broadcast camera, that people expect at least a 2 year self-life-cycle (to take you easily to 2020-2022), that will cost eventually 40% higher (in European prices) with a bigger and heavier body, and you do not deliver. If they are going to offer a much better A7S iii for 3700euros (that is the expected European price) then, excellent. But how realistic this is, after this release? Or, is this a a6300 case? Friends and colleagues bought it for 1499euros, for loosing half its price a couple of months later (a friend had it exactly 90 days, and then the a6500 released). Is there a FS5mkIII imminent for Olympic year? This is a mixed release with a so so sensor from the #1 sensor manufacturer.. My impression is that they just added value to Panasonic (Eva/GH5S) and BMUMP cameras, and whatever else comes this year. -

Heat is the main issue, for sure, that is why GH5 is full frame dSLR size and weight, but it works, and quite well and reliably so far, what's the excuse for a much bigger and heavier form factor though (FS5)? NX1 is a 2014 camera and doesn't overheat recording 78min continous video (with higher H265 bitrate), and to a degree, a much smaller NX500 hasn't overheat to me even when recording events (in very very hot environments of south-east Mediterranean and Crete). Sony have to up their game in 2018, this FS5 release (which is a form factor I am really interest to) gives time to Canon to bring a really worthy competitor with a new C100, and JVC/BM/Panasonic to cut into the entry level cinema/broadcasting category. Maybe Sony sensors has plateaued somehow, that is not amazing stuff from the industry leading sensor manufacturer, and the market is too important for other players to stay idle and just look the Sony domination.
