Noticed that motion cadence goes out the window with Face AF on...... Hopefully that is fixed in a future firmware update.

Yeah, I'm telling you... its going to be really good. But it will take bit of your time for the testing. I completely agree on that... even that test with 240fps from the GH5S thats in this thread (some earlier pages). But notice that its really really soft... may be thats a variable? Soft image for cinematic image? Most of those variables can be eliminated if one person is using both cameras side by side (they are going to use the same light source, software, workflow, etc.). As for native iso, lens quality, white balance... those are limitations you have to live with.... its apples to oranges really... but for some reason a lot of peeps have been saying that the oranges can be apples too. So to eliminate the theory that the images from one camera can be the same as another camera - well... it literally needs to be cut from the same cloth. 10 bit is for color, but if we remove the color? The image is still there.... so we are judging by the image.

Just to be clear, whomever chooses to do these assignments. The point isn't to get the images to match.... After some retrospective thought I realize that it can go either way here because we can say to get the best possible image out of the 1DX2 and try to match it with the GH5S, but then purposefully sabotage it so that it matches... Or the other way around... Get an amazing image with the GH5S and try to match it with the 1DX2... So, it's better that we don't match it exactly and get the best images possible out of either tool and to compare them.... May be even create a subjective anonymous/random poll of which image you prefer (camera A vs camera B; don't show results of poll till the end cause we don't need groupthink to influence the results)

There is a special app.... I think it's Filmic Pro. Film Riot uses it: There may be other apps??? But don't use the built in camera app... It's too basic.

For those that say that the iPhone X can do what the GH5S can do.... Do the same test as stated above. Only the opposite, get the best black and white image out of the GH5S and try to mimic those cinematic shots. If it's shown that the gh5S is as good or better than the 1DX2 and the iPhone X is as good or better than the GH5S... lol By mathematical induction - the iPhone X should be as good or better than the 1DX2 (if A=B and B=C then A=C) Hopefully, it will justify Soderbergh's next movie and we may only ever need an iPhone X ?

How about we work backwards then.... I have neither the 1dx mark 2 nor the gh5S; my friend did have the 1dc for a while but he gave it up. Technically, Im not supposed to have a bias, but I do favor the 1dx mark 2 as I am interested in one (though, I have a feeling that it's going to be a nightmare working with those huge MJPEG files) with that said... I want someone to convince me to side with the GH5S as Im fed up with anything Canon. Everyone is convinced with the malleability of those 10 bit files. But, as much as I am concerned color has nothing to do with image quality (and that's just my opinion) To prove that... Or disprove that (cause, remember... I want you or someone to convince me to side with the GH5S)... Let's work backwards... i.e. let's remove the color space and compare the images in black & white. @DBounce since you have both cameras... You can do a side by side. Your mission (should you choose to accept it) *cue the MI or Bond music*?: - Do some black & white video from both cams make them as cinematic as possible (do it side by side) and let's compare them... -Add filters, speed booster, whatever you want to equalize the playing field. But, at the same time, because so many of us like to say that anything the high end camera can do.... The GH5 can do too.... Same as how those iPhone X to Red, etc. Get the most beautiful (most cinematic) shot in black and white from the 1dx mark 2 (get those f1.8-2.0 shots) and try to mimic that black and white with the GH5S (just for good measure and no excuses) Editted to add: @DBounce I've noticed that you are still getting to know your cameras and you are still trying to get that cinematic image from your cams but I don't want you to mess around too much from the accepted norm so.... Please set your cams to DCI 4K 24p.... Shutter speed to 1/50 ( closest to 1/48) in the 1dx mark 2 and shutter angle at 180d on the GH5S, bring the sharpness down to the lowest on both cams (should you choose to do it).

Sorry man, but I'm not seeing what you're seeing. And, again... I'm sorry... but I have to use your own images against you

Nice set up, whats the matte box are you using? Whats the largest rear opening for it? Cause I'm in the market for a matte box and need 114mm rear opening.

Given that you are going Full Canon, you are never going to get > 480 fps in FHD from Canon. From my point of view, the best thing for Affordable HFR (> 480fps) is probably RX10 mark 2 or RX100 mark 5. That or you Twixtor the b!tch out of 60p or better - I'm sure you can do it with your 1DX2 with its 120p mode.

My experience of renting out: It was good while it lasted, but wasn't much money in it. I rented out my Red Raven (while I had it), but through a rental house. So what I did was that I contacted one of the few rental houses, spoke to the owner and made a deal with him. Drafted a contract, both parties signed it and let the guy hold onto my equipment (its either that, or I hold onto my own equipment and when there is some interest then drive about 30 min. [one way] so the renter can see and take the equipment). When the Raven was rented, the profits were split 50:50; I know thats a pretty big cut, but I'm not doing anything (none of the heavy lifting) other than providing the equipment. They market, get the client (existing and new clients), they have contracts and waiver forms, and the best part is the insurance - they pay for the insurance; my equipment becomes part of the insurance that covers all the other equipment that they have... I can take back the Raven any time I want, with some little notice, terminate my own contract any time I want... It was decent... I used the Raven for 2 or 3 projects and even at the rental house, it wasn't in that much in demand (everyone wanted 8K). I made about $2K over 8 months, much more than that with my own clients, but didn't see much use so I ended up selling it

If we go by this picture.... then some parts of House of Cards (first season, on Netflix) was probably filmed and/or delivered 8bit 4:2:0. From what I know, I saw banding in the low light (lamp) scenes, even in the first 2 episodes and those 2 episodes were directed by David Fincher (who is a RED guy) and by the looks of it - it may have been shot on a RED cam. http://www.red.com/shot-on-red/television - go into search and start typing "house of cards"

No problem here too. I get your argument.... Where the industry is headed, I feel more and more of the projects budget is going towards SFX and CGI.
-
Oooo.... K..... Then....
-
Don't worry, I'm not taking offense; but, you shouldn't take offense when I say what I am about to say... I don't think you know how the industry works... its a business first... then art... then tech. Business first... they want to make the most amount of money by spending the least amount of money. How do you think the Blair Witch Project spawned a bunch of camcorder movies? A budget of $60K (USD) - Box Office: $248.6 Million (USD). Today's consumer cam is far more advanced than yester-year's cinema camera - does the byproduct of yester-years cinema camera any less watchable? For example: I know, I know bad example.... as the actual content is not exactly watchable... but you get where I am going for arguments sake.

I get brand power has some function in it. I remember in another thread (I think Webrunner5 posted a video) and it had some old school (experienced) DP reviewing other cams while holding a Varicam; anyway, he said something along the lines of using a cheaper cam as long as it produces similar or better results than the expensive cam, why not use it... "charge them for the expensive unit and pocket the rest." I know I would.... f*ck... if you want I would put a big wooden box around the GH5, label it ARRI and call it a day. Charge 1 mill, pocket 950K

Did you get to take home footage? Just want to know if that moire and aliasing issue in 120p still a big issue.
-
I just want his personal opinion...and I don't know about mimicking the outcome to match another camera's IQ. Also, its not something I want to spend hours doing... I remember saying that you have to find a camera where the end result must please the majority (who watches it)... Everyone loves the IQ of Arri cams... hands down, no questions asked... can you really emulate the GH5's IQ to be like any Arri cam, if not you, may be someone more skilled? If so, why havent the big wigs (in hollywood) caught on and saved money by using the GH5 instead?
-
So you bought 2 X-H1s? Given that you only played with it for 10 min., how long did you get to play with the video functions?
-
You are right, I'm not going to like your answer, but thats because you never answered my question properly. And, I'll explain why.... this -> "You’re probably not going to like my answer, @mkabi, but shooting HLG and throwing a LUT on it gets me closer to what I prefer. " Makes me assume that you like the IQ of the GH5, but I specifically told you - you can't use HLG or color correct meaning you can't throw a LUT on it. Then you say, "And I would have no hesitation recommending either the X-T2 or X-H1 based solely on image quality alone." Its a recommendation, but its not telling me which one you prefer - the GH5's IQ or X-T2's IQ. I know you like muted colors, so turn down the saturation in camera and press record. Let me ask the question again, you have to deliver what you have to the end-client straight from camera (no color correction) - which IQ do you prefer the X-T2 or the Gh5? Be honest, I'm not going to be hurt, yeah sure.... I'm interested in the X-H1 - but I don't have a pre-order on it, nor do I own any Fuji lenses. If all the reviews say, stay away.... the image quality is worse than so and so camera and the so and so camera is cheaper than the X-H1, why would I buy the X-H1?
-
Wow... okay. Are you an existing Fuji owner, do you have lenses, other bodies, etc.? Using a camera like this, what percentage do you figure you will use it for photography vs. video? Did you buy it with or without battery grip? Did you try the pre-production model or production model? Depending on the answers that you provide, it will most likely incite more questions.

For me at present: -Fuji X-H1 -1DX mark 2 There is no number, they are pretty much tied in first place. Now its all down to the a7siii and whatever blackmagic brings to the table.
-
You can be honest, I don't mind you comparing the X-H1 to the GH5. Or the X-T2 to the GH5.... From purely image quality standpoint (forget the ergonomics - assume both have the exact same ergonomics)... Straight out of the camera (you don't have time to edit the footage).... So forget color correction so you need to choose a profile (other than HLG or V-log) and stick with it. Which image would you rather deliver? The one from the X-T2 or the GH5?

Fuji has 1.17 crop.... better than Canon, but still crop.

Whatever floats your boat... First, don't listen to spec sheet heroes... cause these people look at spec sheets and automatically think that if this camera has more features than this camera then the camera that has the most features is the best... I know... I know... I'm going to get a lot of flak for that one... but sometimes you don't need those features, sometimes you will never use them... its need over want... Here is a good analogy... Ever had pizza before? Some people like just pepperoni pizza, others like more than just pepperoni - like a deluxe pizza (pepperoni, mushrooms and green pepper) or a hawaiian pizza (Pepperoni, bacon/ham, pinneapple), others want a custom pizza.... all understandable.... but what if you start getting toppings you don't want? Like anchovies... well... that being a topping in the first place.... it warrants that someone likes Anchovies, so what about bird poo and dog kaka... you can pick out or rub off bird poo and dog kaka if you don't like it (just like some features on a camera i.e. not use it if you don't like it) but you know that bird poo and dog kaka is going to ruin the taste of the pizza similarly an added feature might ruin the overall image. Second, don't listen to people that are dead centered on whatever current system that they currently own... this is typically people that are proud of whatever camera that they own, they don't want another camera to come along and make their camera look bad... so they start shaming it. Third, yes... watch these videos, but remember most of these videos are people that are photographers first.... videographers sometimes, but really don't know crap about how to shoot video. If you say anything about that, they will just say that if you want a video camera, then "buy a proper video camera" (typically an ENG camera) Fourth, find people that review multiple systems, but do an honest review without going about saying this is better because of whatever minor issue. Lastly, make your own conclusions.

Trust me, I don't think anyone wants to see wrinkles in their skin So, may be a filter was applied? This is why we need more independent reviewers that have a plethora of experience with other cameras and IQ from them. As for 4K on YT, may be Northrup has a really good computer and connection to watch 4K on YT without artifacts & stuttering.
