This is just an assumption, but I would think that they (as in Atomos) are trying to support the Canon cameras as well as Sony Cams. You can see this with so many firmware updates even with the original shogun - constantly saying the C500 is supported (with this or that update) is kind of encouraging. Also, they have more than one 3G SDI inputs now in the inferno, compared to the single input of the original Shogun - its more suited to receive dual signals. May be its not a perfect solution, but its something... not that I'm trying to defend them, but Odyssey is sounding more and more out of my reach as I read on it... The downside of the Odyssey: -After you purchase your Odyssey for $1795 - you have to pay an extra $999 for the Canon RAW license. -Even if you say... hey... $2795 is nothing... I'm already there... from all I'm reading... when you record Canon RAW - its literally 1hour = 1tb. So 2 hours = 2 tb HD, in comparison, you can get 8 hours with the 1DC on 2tb. So, how many SSDs are you buying for this beast? -Speaking of SSDs, Odyssey's SSD support is limited to their proprietary ones and Samsung's SSD???? -And this is the single biggest deal breaker for me... its not portable. You are looking at third party solutions of V-mount, D-tap, some third part company that will add battery plates to the odyssey... I think the cheapest add-on plate is $89 bucks... but the price of batteries is not cheap. I'm not going to list the upsides/dowsides of the Atomos, but it comes with 2 sony batteries and its hotswappable Nonetheless, whats really bugging me right now is the following statement: "Some of the links I posted above go into the specifics and unique attributes of Canon cinema RAW, which is quite different from almost any other RAW implementation since the Canon RAW has much larger data rates (moreover, ISO is baked-in and white balance is set)." Am I reading this right??? Its RAW with large data rates, but ISO is baked in and WB is set? How is it RAW then? Or rather what makes it RAW?

Thanks Kino. Speaking of which, after more research on the Atomos Shogun Inferno. You (not specifically you, Kino... but anyone) need to really read between the lines. Its a Raw recorder, so it will take a Raw signal, BUT it will convert it to either CinemaDNG, Pro Res. or DNxHD from SDI (supporting: FS series cameras and C300ii/C500). So, my next question... is CinemaDNG a raw format? What is the difference between CinemaDNG and Canon's RMF?

Thanks Kino, very enlightening. After reading and researching further, you have to merge the .rmf clips from the 2 hard drives with Convergent Design's Clip Merger app. What if I don't want to pay that extra $1000 to unlock Canon RAW on the Odyssey... well... at least not right away... Can you still output the 4K RAW and/or 4K HRAW @ 120fps and record it on the Odyssey as pro res.? I understand that the max. the Odyssey will do in Pro Res is 4K at 30p... so will the 4K 120fps output be rerecorded as 4K 30p Pro Res (slowed down)? (I know Andrew laid it out, but it wasn't really specific enough in the article: http://www.eoshd.com/2016/06/4k-raw-120fps-3k-say-hello-second-hand-canon-c500/)

I think its a typo in DPReview's spec page. If you go to the 3rd page where they have an image of the video menu & a little excerpt about video (below the image) - I don't see DCI. And, as for your actual statement "Yes, as far as they say. So, 24p, if present, would be higher." May be I'm going by semantics here, but to include "if" means there is an actual possibility... Well.. I dont' see it... and what I don't see, doesn't exist so no possibility... no if... Unless the company said that they will include it in a future firmware update. Do you have a source for that?
-
No DCI - Only UHD 4K. And, no 4K 24p, only 4K 30p. Here: https://***URL removed***/reviews/yi-m1-mirrorless-ilc-first-impressions-review/3 Scroll down to the picture and paragraph under 'video'.

I'm confused, why does it need 2 SSDs? Is it to get a data rate of over 700 MB/s? Doesn't that mean its writing on both SSDs too? If thats true, how can we conform the format from the 2 SSDs to one? Lastly, where are you getting this information? Cause I would want to read more into it, as a possible purchaser of the C500 + Odyssey or Shogun Inferno.

Not an expert here, but didn't Andrew write that the C500 doesn't really output 4K 120fps RAW - its half RAW? 4096X1080p - and it conforms it to 30/25/24p. There is another option? A blurry 4K 120fps too. In any case, there is a scene in Wolf of Wall Street, where Jonah Hills about to vomit. I think they used a C500 for that scene. Its extremely distinguishable compared to other scenes, because of the softness.

I heard that the 5DSR is amazing. If you can afford it then get that...

I dont' know what to say to that... What exactly is the DPAF supposed to do? (Rhetorical Question) And, my version 1 lens works with it to do exactly that. In fact, I think it works better than the 50mm f/1.8 II (which is shown as being supported).
-
From owner and operator of the Canon 16-35 f/2.8 (version 1), I can attest that it works on the 70D and the 7D mark 2. A bit noisy, but it works... its no STM or nano USM...

I'm sure you aren't interested in A-mount cameras (and neither am I), but from my perspective... A-mount wasn't abandoned. Even before this announcement, they were releasing A-mount cameras. Last year (2015) they announced and recently released the a68 Voila: http://www.cnet.com/products/sony-alpha-a68/preview/; And the year before that (2014) it was the a77ii.... http://www.cnet.com/products/sony-alpha-a77-ii/preview/ so... how that translates as abandoning or giving up or anything else of the sort... makes me wonder....

You need delve deeper. Since those reviews of the Z1 there has been firmware updates and a flat profile added. People that were early adopters were the ones who wrote those reviews... Much like all the blackmagic reviews. If you look at the blackmagic reviews... People are still complaining of the 2.5K RAW... Since then they've added compressed RAW update.
-
Yep. To be honest, I don't understand what all the excitements for... The Z camera E1 has been out for a while now: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1203955-REG/z_camera_e1cam3a701_e1_mini_4k_video.html The only problem with tha x5r is the price. Shoot we can even include BM Micro cams here.
-
Hey mercer, where'd you get that rumor from? Source would be nice if you can find it. Cause, I'd be interested in that.
-
@wolf33d Yeah dude... come on... at what point are you going to give up on Canon? Did you not just witness the 1.74 crop - 4K WTF moment with the 5D4???
-
Since we are playing fantasy. What I want is... FF DSLR format. Interchangeable PL/EF mount 20 to 25MP DPAF (touch screen) that can shoot up to 25,600 ISO at up to 10fps. Blackmagic like menu system, as Canon's has gotten quite convoluted lately. Now for video features in the same camera: - IQ like Arri, - Multiple Res to Ratio formats & HFR like Red AND -Redcode for editing. All for $3000 to $5000
-
See... I think that it depends on the actor(s) too. But if you discuss it with them, and may be ask them to practice what you want out of the scene (a couple of days beforehand). You should be able to reduce the takes at least... Find a happy medium.
-
+1 That plus, I need to stop trying to do multiple takes. Make the first take the best take and move on. So much time is wasted on getting the 'perfect' take. Either that or delete the messed up takes when they are messed up and you aren't planning to use them in bloopers or anything.

It says 5K??? Youtube supports highter than 4K?

Don't shoot the messenger. Just thought you guys would be interested. It's like going in an appliance store to peruse... Then saying you ain't interested in the refrigerator, but enough to tell your friend, who is actually looking for a fridge... "Yo! There is a sale on this fridge here." BTW, I do that all the time... When my wife wants to go shopping and drags me along... I peruse the electronic section... Walk through bestbuy... To pass the time, get to know the latest gadgets.... Stay a top of things in terms of tech... Don't be all touchy and heart broken if someone said something bad about your camera. Even if it is as simple as "I'm not interested."?

CR has leaked pictures of the XC15. Still not interested.

Canon C300 Mark II flopping vs the Sony FS7 at rental?
mkabi replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
You know what I think is happening? What I think is happening is that... people are slowly adopting the Sony cams, simply for its features... once they get it they don't like the colors or skin tones. But they've still adopted it and said "screw it..." getting used to those colors. I see a major shift coming... such that people start getting used to Sony colors and saying... thats what I want. Here is to hoping that Canon fails... and starts saying "what the fuck did we do?" Starts downsizing and starts firing that whole marketing and research department. -
Correction, 7D uses CF cards. And... From what I know about ML on 7D... With 5X zoom... It can do 2.5K
