Man Dave... am glad you like the GH5s but I don’t know how you would give up this image for it? I mean... Hollywood films have been shot with the 1DC...
  2. Thanks

That would depend on why you are using them. If a budget issue then it may well be skimping, however, if a creative choice, then not skimping at all. However, you are suggesting to always just use a smartphone. For me, a smartphone is not close to an ideal platform for filmmaking. YMMV.
The matte box is a Genus. It's on 15mm rod rails, but has an option to connect directly to lenses for a more mobile setup. It takes two filters with one of the two rotatable. The opening is 105mm. Build quality is good. I like it for the size and weight.

The reason, apart from habit and intransigence, for choosing Arri/Panavision (and to a lesser extent Red/Sony, and recently Panasonic) has always been the issue of reliability and availability. You don't want to stand down a million dollar a day set while you wait for a broken camera to be repaired or replaced and the big boys have that professional level of service down to a tee.
Now I don't personally think that any currently available prosumer camera along the lines of GH5 etc yet has the effortless cinematic qualities of an Alexa, but it's easy to see that it won't be that long before they might. At that point we may reach an interesting tipping point where the whole reliability/repair/spares issue becomes moot as a production can just buy 50 of the things and still be quids in on their camera department costs. Interesting times.

    Indeed!
What season / episode have you made it up to in The Wire??? Far and away one of the best television series ever made.
I remember in the book about the series, the dp was asked about how he made the dreary settings in the wire so authentic, and he replied, "I'm an expert in ugly."

Practically, I don't need it.  IF a shot has a gradient that creates banding I can fudge over it with some post voodoo.  Or, more likely, just live with it.
    *gasp!*
Okay, I'll pardon you to retreat to the chaise and allow recovery of your delicate constitution...
Hey, I'm a low-fi filmmaker, got better stuff to worry about.
Now, if I was in a more up-market situation, it matters.  But I ain't, so it's doesn't.  And, on a side note, the IQ tech will be so democratized in 5 years it REALLY won't matter.
    ----------
Funny story:  running a filmfest and one filmmaker had the most engaging narrative feature length film about love/family/redemption.  Beautiful characters, etc, etc.  Looked like garbage though.  Shot on a Sony HDR-SR1.  Bad lighting, exposure, color grading, composition, cinematography, highlight roll off was disgusting!  ... Still somehow an engaging film!  Writing and acting were so good.
However, the director came up to me an hour before screening, distraught that he didn't give us the ProRes4:4:4 file (we were going to screen the .mp4)  "Oh, please fix this problem!  Please!"
Dude, what problem, I thought. Your film looks like shit and we still like it.  4:4:4 ain't an issue.
Anyway, screened the ProRes4:4:4 and he felt better.  People is crazy, y'all.
On a side note, I'm watching "The Wire" for the first time.  Looks like crap too.  (yes, even shot on film) Sets are so poorly lit or overlit -- and there's nothing really interesting going on with the cinematography.  Oh well.  Still good stuff to watch.

Waiting game... hehe Exactly my mood here. At least until NAB expecting Blackmagic and a7SIII entries but each day more centered on the new X-H1 toy and perhaps that GH5S too if nothing more interesting won't pop up in the meantime.

I am surely not our good Jon but I think I can answer you on that one : )
You can mimic whatever outcome you want when you have certain features. GH5 series have all the features and many others to achieve that and beyond this. It just depends on your skills.
SOOC any Fuji is better, from their unique color science.
There's no worse, just different approach for. Depending on your needs and taste of working.
    Hope this helps! (E :-)

haha I mentioned the camera, pal! : ) Nice to know brexit didn't pop up yet ; ) Always accurate AF? :-)

You can be honest, I don't mind you comparing the X-H1 to the GH5. Or the X-T2 to the GH5.... From purely image quality standpoint (forget the ergonomics - assume both have the exact same ergonomics)... Straight out of the camera (you don't have time to edit the footage).... So forget color correction so you need to choose a profile (other than HLG or V-log) and stick with it. Which image would you rather deliver? The one from the X-T2 or the GH5?

Holy shit, we posted the same video. ?
I worked in print for a few years, right before the industry crossover into digital. I think ppl have an understandable misconception on how printing actually works. It's similar to theater projection. Especially for things like billboards, as the video explains you have to factor in viewing distance.
Now, for the various configurations of magizine spreads, you need a minimum of 300 dpi, and a minimum of 8MP. (8 million pixels) Again, the veiwing distance is relatively close, so pixel denisty matters a lot more here.
Sometimes, you get what you get from a client and you have to run it.
In short, for most applications, at least on the resolution end, the GH5/s should be adequate. That being said, the GH brand of cameras have never been touted for their photos end. That does'nt mean ppl don't shoot stills with it.
This goes to show ppl that the resolution race, although nice to have, has largely been a gimmick to sell cameras.

Thought to myself, "I'll go to the X-H1 thread and talk about some of the assumptions about Fuji AF being substandard versus my contrary experience of of the AF using the X-T2 for some very demanding tasks and also my tests of the Face Detect AF on it last year and....."
Well, then I opened the thread....

really? come on now just about every single post of yours in this thread has been about the H1's shortcomings and how vastly superior the GH5 is to your eyes (including multiple H1 vs GH5 screenshots) ? also how do you explain several people in this thread stating their desire to switch systems from GH5 to H1, if they aren't competing?
i'm sorry but it certainly feels like some of the posters here are eager to put down this not even released product in an effort to justify their own gear purchases..
meanwhile, in the real world, the H1 reached top 10 position on amazon's best mirrorless sellers on pre-orders alone (while GH5S bottoms at +50th):

i'm pretty sure Fuji have a hit on their hands, no matter what the so-called pundits in here may want to make people believe..

This was such a simple shoot, but the story really just fell into place and came together. This is a little piece on my Great Uncle that I shot several years ago on my 7D and a 24mm L Prime lens. This video changed my career...

I think the GH4 had both if I remember right. By that I mean it could be set to automatically do it or not.
This is for the GH5. which does it also. I guess that is what you are asking about? From what I read, never had one, the NX1 doesn't have 180 degree setting?

I've found my perfect camera. It took me ten long years of searching but I finally found the one. She may not be perfect to others but she is perfect for me.
So don't give up hope she is out there for you!
By the by I really like the raw grittiness of the image coming out of the Fuji - see the video I posted above. I think it is unique in this respect.
For some reason Im interested in seeing what photographers and nonpros can get out of the camera. There is something natural and organic to the shooting style that suits the camera. It isn't suited to a more commercial polished looks like the gh5 series. Fuji cameras have personality that's why I like them. That's saying something for a mass produced product.

I'm not extremely proud of these guys, nothing to brag about, and its not even new stuff - its from 2013 (when I was breaking into the industry, and I did this promo for free)... I can't show you the latest stuff cause client-owns it and all that privacy and confidentiality agreements.
