mkabi reacted to tomekk in Why YouTuber Logan Paul can't put his camera down
Hmm, my techniques for avoiding certain social media's content must be working. I've never heard of him before your blog post.

mkabi got a reaction from IronFilm in 2018 - The year of the VDSLRs?
I'm not very hopeful about the Canon 7D mark 3 and 90D having 4K either... And, my pessimism towards Canon have been there since the 7D mark 2. And, your arguments for the C line and c100 mark 2/3 are very sound.
But... This time, although I might regret saying this... I'm going to bet the farm...that the 7D mark 3 and/or 90D will have 4K.
Let's see why:
-The 7D has always been dubbed the mini-1DX - atleast since the introduction of the 7D mark 2. If that remains true, and it's missing 4K...???
-XXD side follows suit from the 7D line. You will see that there isn't much difference between the 70D and the 7D mark 2.
-I know that they didn't have 4K in the 6D mark 2, but if sensor resolution has something to do with the 4k crop factor... Then the 6D mark 2 would've had better 4K crop than the 5D mark 4 and there would be no point in putting C-log in the 5D mark 4, because most people would still choose the 6D mark 2 for 4k(cheaper, better crop and flip out screen). Which brings me to the rumoured crop on the Canon APS-C... I've been hearing that there is going to be a 1.4 crop on the already 1.6 crop sensor, which means 2.24 crop. (That's worse than the GH5 no?)
-If they don't add 4K into their 7D or XXD line now.... They will have to in their next iteration.... Which is 4 years away.... The GH5 is already doing 6K anamorphic.... Weren't most people talking about 8K cameras for 2020 Olympics?
https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2016/8/26/12656286/8k-tv-broadcasts-2020-olympics-sony-panasonic
Can Canon really wait till 2022 for 4K in their APS-Cs? When 8K is aimed for 2020?
As for your dilemma about the c100 mark 2 competing with the 7D mark 3 or 90D. Because of resolution... I feel a price drop coming for both C100 mark 2 and C200. Then you will obviously have to choose between crappy 1080p from the APS-Cs and really bad 4k crop.... Over amazing 1080p sampled from a 4K sensor, xlr inputs, built in nd-filter, etc.

I know I should be hawking the 1DC right now.
But, if I were you... Because you are coming from the NX1... I’m sure you haven’t invested in many Canon lenses....
Go with the Gh5... and later the Eva1...
You know that Panasonic won’t disappoint in the long run.... and because your a bonafide film student... you of all people should appreciate the 6K opengate anamorphic mode....

@noone Come on dude, the article clearly exposes blatant sealing weaknesses of the A7S2.. and yes some camera models (especially Nikon & Pentax) are much superior to average in weather sealing:
Go try that on a Sony cam!

mkabi got a reaction from zetty in Panasonic seems to be announcing something "BIG" on December 15
Ummmm.... sorry to rain on your parade....
But... What if on December 15 they just put out a Firmware update???
Sure, there are patents and prototypes out there...
But, isn't it a bit stupid of any company to announce anything 10 days before christmas and/or boxing day?
I'm thinking of this particular scenario:
Our spouses and/or partner may be thinking of buying you a GH5 for christmas.... and then you say.... no no wait for the December 15 announcement.... then you say... I want a GH5S.... then your partner asks.... when is that going to come out? In February/March.... OH.... Spouse/partner buys you a tie or mug for Christmas.

I'm sorry for pitifully pandering on behalf of my friend, but if you are interested in a 1DC.... Check out the 'Gear for Sale' Section and make an offer.
Its tested, it comes with extra batteries and memory cards, just saying....

I agree with Jonpais.
If you are not a DP/Director, nor are you an aspiring DP/Director.... who are you to judge others of not being DP/Director, and/or aspiring DP/Director?
Don't put me and you in the same boat, just because you and I have the same camera doesn't mean that I have the same thoughts and/or dreams like you.
Now, nobody here was born in a Hollywood studio, at least I'm not... and even though, I can afford some of the cameras on that list.... I prefer to film with whatever I have....
I would assume most established DP/Directors started off somewhere as well.... and didn't have Panavision or whatever at their disposal from the get-go of their respective careers...
Now, if you are an established DP/Director making some serious money, and you are filming with an iPhone.... then that's a different story.... but still, who am I to judge?
Speaking of iphone, everyone always forgets about Tangerine - https://www.theverge.com/2015/1/28/7925023/sundance-film-festival-2015-tangerine-iphone-5s
Now that.... if anything, should be an inspiring story for those of us who are still aspiring to be a DP/Director....

mkabi reacted to mercer in Gear list
Remember... there's a reason why high end, professional photographers use Canon or Nikon. It's the glass. So base your decision from that. I personally wouldn't risk relying upon electronic adapters for the work you're describing. If you need Canon glass, use a Canon. If you need Nikon glass, use a Nikon. Since this is a hybrid photo/video job, Canon seems like the logical choice. If you hate the idea of using either, then make sure your choice has the native glass you need to do the job.

I know what unreliable AF is.... its Focus hunting and being off focus even after selecting what to focus on.
So, I'm assuming its the opposite of that....
-
mkabi reacted to EthanAlexander in Sony A7R III announced with 4K HDR
Agreed. Here's why I think some perspective is needed in all this...
To get 10 bit you need to pay:
$1000 - Black Magic $2000 - Panasonic $4700 - Sony $10,000 - Canon (The C200 doesn't count - having to record raw at 800Mbps just to get a nice 10 bit codec is just unrealistic for too many people. Even still, that's $7500! Same with hacking a 5D)
And to get full frame 4K:
Sony - $2300 Nikon - $3300 Canon - $5700 BM - Nope Panasonic - Nope. Oh, and they don't even offer S35 4K unless you pay $7350. Not trying to bash any company, I just find it amazing that because one company offered 10 bit on a M43 sensor camera that it's now expected on every camera, regardless of sensor size or price.
Don't get me wrong - I'd love a 10 bit mirrorless Sony as a B Cam to my FS5, but I wish this kind of enthusiasm were directed toward demanding higher quality color filters, EVFs, audio preamps, exposure guides, etc., all of which are important for getting a shot whereas an 8-bit C100 can nail the same shot as a 10-bit GH5 4/5 times.
Every company is introducing firsts or offering way more in certain areas (canon is DPAF, Olympus with insane IBIS, Panasonic with 10 bit in mirrorless, Sony with Full frame mirrorless)... So I think @mercer is just saying that it's unrealistic to expect every other company to immediately follow suit and include the same features regardless of cost. At least, that's how I feel.

In retrospect, this announcement is kind of surprising.... what ever happened to the a7 mark3? Thats the camera without the R or the S.

mkabi got a reaction from Kisaha in LOL Canon... C200 Codec "Upgrade" details announced
I guess, I will add my 2 cents in this....
I think the issue is name and price.
Suppose they named it C100 mark 3 and priced it closer to that....
You can't even argue about the specs because its an obvious evolution of the C100 mark 2 - and the price would also be obvious....
In my opinion, they made a mistake with the C200 and C700.
In fact, if I had a time machine and I was part of Canon's advisory committee....
I would have went back in time and told them to make a C100 mark 2 with 2.5K...Release C500 mark 2 with 6K (external recording - just following their thought process with the first C500).... and when you are ready with 8K.... then create a new line that will be the C700. Scrap the whole C200 idea.

mkabi reacted to kaylee in Shooting Through Huge F*** Ups, Mistakes and Disasters
Hey guys!!
I was thinking it would be fun and even therapeutic to have a thread about production disasters – war stories about our own mistakes as well as those of others (feel free to omit names to protect the innocent) that have been embarrassing, tragic, etc.
It’s fun because we have such a limited camaraderie in our little filmmaking tribe and we can all relate to each other, and also, of course, this is how we learn~!
I find that when these things happen, and I say, “I’ll laugh about this one day”, that’s usually the case, but it might literally take years for that day to come. Here’s an example…
Once upon a time I was doing a photo shoot with a midget wearing prosthetic makeup. I designed the makeup, built it, and worked for months on it with another artist. Some talent was flown in. Makeup, photographer, lighting, etc.
At the time I was living in a big loft/industrial space in downtown LA, so we did the shoot at my place. And of course, being a good producer and host, I had a plethora of snacks representing crafty.
Along with all the food, juice and sodas, I got a 12 pack of beer for my friends to enjoy if they wanted to hang around for a minute AFTER THE SHOOT. Naturally I put that beer in my fridge with everything else.
As things were getting set up and Bob* (*name changed to protect his precious professional reputation) the midget was getting his makeup applied, I noticed that the lil guy was sitting on his stool sipping a beer. “Ah, he’s having a beer,” I thought. “Long makeup process. Enjoy.”
Sometime later, after hours of makeup being applied, I noticed Bob going to the fridge for another beer. I said, “Hey Bob, I was saving those for later, but I can get some more, do you think I should?”
Bob slurred, “Yeah, this is almost gone,” and held up a box formerly containing 12 beers, a box that was nearly empty.
It was at this point my friends, that reality started to melt just a little bit. The calamity became apparent. I immediately started thinking, “I’ll just do it again, I’ll do this whole shoot again…” Things started getting a little visually trippy despite my sobriety, think Fear and Loathing.
Bob was completely, absolutely plastered. He was literally falling off his stool drunk. My friend the makeup artist persisted as Bob began fussing like a child. “MY WIFE…WHERE’S MY WIFE?” he howled.
“Your wife is in Chicago, Bob. That’s where you live.”
Then the pizza arrived. Bob was hungry. He sat down on my couch and proceeded to eat half a pizza AS WELL AS HALF THE PROSTHETIC MAKEUP FROM HIS FACE. I was in awe.
Things did not get any better from there, but everyone on my crew reacted to this hot mess like a champion, they all hung in there for me, and after a ton of work in Photoshop that I should’ve never had to do........ I got images that were pretty close to what I’d originally wanted.
I can laugh about this now, but this is the kind of shit that they don’t teach you in art school. Expect the unexpected. Be aware of variables you can’t control. Limit them. It’s become a mantra.
HERE’S ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF ME SCREWING UP:
One time earlier this year I was shooting some personal stills on my 5d3 with my sunglasses on, cuz I’m so good at photography that I can’t be bothered to take them off at 9am, and I completely fucked up the settings and a bunch of the exposures were ruined. I’ve never done that with a digital camera in my life and that happened this year, in 2017. Thank God this account is anonymous
Wow, that WAS therapeutic, I feel great now~!

Thats one of the internet problems nowadays. Everyone has always something to say...something to add to a certain topic but the reality is that thats not true at all. Society as brought us here and keep forcing us to do that (to post something, to write an opinion, to share your own life and so on). And in most cases that results in posts and dialogues with insults and etc. Thats why i rarely post on facebook and although i visit eoshd everyday i dont respond or post a lot simply because i dont have anything to add in terms of knowledge.
