mkabi got a reaction from mercer in Stills to video, need help
I second that, given that OP has the lenses. Sell your current E-M5 (body) and get a mark 2 (body only) - in fact, get 2 of them, that way you can shoot multiple angles without having to reshoot.
The only other advice I have... because you are new to this.... look to other documentaries as a guide...
Watch for color, composition, framing - just like photography... but also look for rhythm, scene switching and B-roll shots.
Good luck.
P.S. After getting an idea of how to shoot and edit.... do some pre-planning so you know what you want to shoot so the editing is less grueling.

If you're not rich enough to own a handful of PL lenses yourself, then don't buy it in the PL mount.

mkabi got a reaction from Dan Wake in which slider on the budget?
The second one is better.... I've used both and the second one will remain smooth over time, only because its easier to clean and maintain.

mkabi reacted to fuzzynormal in Why You Suck at Editing
Not me. I'm brutal and discriminating to all footage.
Don't care where it comes from or who shot it, me included.
If I'm not willing to cut, then I'm not editing.

mkabi reacted to jgharding in Rumour - Canon C200 confirmed at Cinegear 2017
This is in line with what is floating about and seems reasonable given their standard release schedules.
I'm gonna take a stab and say they'll probably price it around 6-7000 mark, so more than the C100 mk ii was at release.
Either that or they'll actually make it a C100 Mkiii with a small step up in spec as before. Maybe 1080p100 and 4kp30
Canon seem to have some kind of aversion to high speed so I wouldn't expect more than 100fps.
They could also make a mildly upgraded C100 MK iii AND a C200 and not cannibalise the line, this would make some sense and keep the core C100 format profitable, a bit like the constant upgrades of the 550D ad nauseum.
TBH it's the one I've been waiting for, but we all know pinning hopes on Canon these days is a bit like waiting for Father Christmas and seeing your dodgy uncle walk in wearing just a beard and novelty boxers.

mkabi got a reaction from Dave Maze in C100 mkiii
See... this... we've been saying it for years.... Canonrumors forum peeps - always throw the same old - Canon is number 1 & making the money to prove it - argument.
Their foundation is crumbling - they refused to believe it.
All the vloggers are switching and prompting the switch - what did they expect to happen?

I just had an "on the record" conversation with the a canon rep today on the show floor and brought up the whole "lack of 4k across the board" issue. They told me that the Japanese corporate people just don't get it but now are seeing some serious impact from Panasonic and Sony. He said their philosophy is that people who buy 77d and t7i don't need 4k but I said the 80d is a great video camera and they should add 4k to that model. He said a 90d with 4k would make sense but not to get our hopes up.
I also spoke to a Panasonic rep today who told me that he was on the airplane sitting next to a Canon rep and the Canon rep told him "you and Sony are eating our lunch in the lower end and the a9 is a serious hit to our high end." The Panasonic rep said this is the first year that Canon reps have the humility and lack of ego/ pride that they normally do.
Also, I spoke to the Canon rep about the c100 mk3. He said it does exist. It's just not here and he couldn't tell me when we will see it. He couldn't confirm any specs. I'll try to dig more on them tomorrow

Well if you want to make a old Pro Mac case a PC here is about the best video I have found to do it. But not for the faint of heart!!

mkabi got a reaction from webrunner5 in New computer -_- help
Let me just add Viruses, Worms, etc.created by some cruel programmer are also a threat.
And, I've been meaning to add to the PC vs. MAC debate.
I've been a Windows guy all my life, but even I admit the stability of MAC environments.
So... for video and photos, I use a MAC - I also have it disconnected from the internet.
For everything else to which I don't give a hoot about.... PC.
Also... redundancy, back-up.... thats what most companies do.... For Disaster Recovery. So why not do the same at home?

Surprisingly a SSD does Not last very long. A "normal" hard drive lasts longer. Best to put your stuff up on a cloud service. It is probably cheaper in the short run. But in reality Nothing in this day is safe because of Hackers!
A lot of people just buy a New SD card for every shoot. They can last a long time if you don't use them all the time.
And I would not think a Mac last any longer than a PC. They pretty much have the same stuff in them in order to work.

I'm done with camera bodies till the 8K revolution is full on swing... But Im very interested in other stuff (lights, supports, lenses, laptops/PC, monitors, recorders, mics and speakers). May be there should be a sub forum for all deals and discounts.

mkabi reacted to Flynn in Sell my 1DC for GH5?
Smart move to do some tests and then decide. You sound pretty happy with what you've got. A lot of Canon people seem to get super disappointed when moving to another system. But, if you end up preferring the GH5, get what you can out of the Canon. Not like you won't be able to buy another one down the road, probably for much less.

mkabi reacted to Kisaha in Low budget microphones
You have to give more information. Usually it goes a mic per person, or you have a boomman do the work moving the microphone accordingly.
If the people are close, you can use a cardioid microphone.
You should check the Oktava 012 set, with 3 capsules, a cardioid (good for two people close together, instruments), a omni (taking sound from all around it, good for bad placement, but in our industry is a disadvantage, because it receives unwanted sounds) and a super cardioid, like a cardioid, but with narrower "beam", the most appropriate for our industry, and it could be possible good for what you want too.
It is in your budget, but you will need a good Rycotte wind shield and a good Rycote mic holder with the Lyre system so you have to add 100-200$ to your budget. It is extremely sensitive to air, mic movement, and handling noises.

mkabi reacted to Cinegain in Film School
This debate gets brought up every once in a while. Now, I haven't been, but the general concensus I believe always was: film school isn't useless, though, it's not really about the material that's being taught. It's working on things together and connecting with people that you might stay in contact with for years after graduating. For that it's quite useful. A degree on your resume does look cool, but it's not the thing that sells your skillset and level of talent. A list of productions you've worked on and a filmreel will do that for you. Think it's more about being good at networking and selling yourself, than what some paper says... so... you can start learning things you might already know... or work on getting actual field experience. One is not better than the other, you got to walk your own path, if that includes film school, that's cool, if it doesn't, that's cool too.

Like he said. I would really consider the audience too. I understand that we love topics like cameras, lenses, framing, editing, etc. BUT, most these guys who are probably taking this course for an easy A... probably won't be interested in the stuff that we talk about daily.
In my opinion, consider the audience and the time limit of the workshop. Then show enough to arose curiosity so they can learn all the other stuff on their own.
If I was you, I would ask everyone what's their favorite movie, then get a consensus of one popular movie. Throw the trailer of that movie through projector (via YouTube) and breakdown the trailer... scene by scene. Make it interactive and at the end... tell them about camera, lens, lighting, composition, etc.

As teenagers, they will probably already have a good idea of what kind of things they like. Maybe it would be good to ask them about their favourite scenes in their favourite films and then teach them some of the techniques used to create that scene?

the real question is, what happened to 2.7k? it would be amazing to see all these 4k capable cameras that can to 1080p120fps to add an 2.7k 60fps mode.
