  1. It took me a year and a half to talk myself into buying and XC10--and boy, am I glad I did. It's not only got a beautiful, clean, robust image, it's really fun to shoot. The XC15 makes several things better, and the XLR produces a very clean audio---the equivalent of the C300m2. And the additional custom profiles and expanded color pallet gives you a wide range of choices. I also like that Canon didn't substantially raise the price--selling the XC15 at the original price of the XC10. I think it's really interesting the way Andrew Reid describes using the XC10/15 for exposure---shooting in TV mode and running the shutter speed up to 200 in bright sunlight. It actually works, but I haven't done enough shooting that way to see how it affects the look of movement..like people walking or gesturing. Any ideas?
  2. My experience with the fs5 was the last straw after 10 years with Sony--and growing. The skin tones looked artificial and over processed---never attractive. And the horrible magenta made me crazy. And then S-log is a nightmare to grades--LUTS everywhere and they all look like crap. The 100 mk2 is a fine cam, but the 4k of the XC10 is much, much better, clean and clear with C300 Mk II colors.
  3. I had terrible results with then FS5---after shooting Sony for 10 years, the image and color of the FS5 finally convinced me I should move to Canon. IMO you would be VERY unhappy with the FS5. If you do corporate videos if I were you with your $$$ I buy 1 XC15 and 1 XC10, use the XC15 as an A cam with the XLRs, and use the XC10 as a B cam and buy a fig rig. That would be an awesome combination creating a LOT of variety of image and perspective. None of the cameras you mentioned have 4k and beauty and color of image that the XC10/XC15 have. If you'll look at Reid's review of the XC10 comments you'll find an image matching of the XC15 and C300 M2 I just did, shooting both in C-log. There you can see just how good the XC15/XC10 is in color. Plus, the C100 Mk2 doesn't have anything close to the robustness of the image quality of the XC10. If you get the C100 Mk Ii you MUST get an Atmos Ninja Star to be able to record a robust image that you can grade without falling apart. the XC15 is so superior, and the XLR attachment audio quality is excellent. By the way, I've owned everyone of these cams and shot a lot. For doing what you're doing I'd definitely take the XC15/10. Just light the interviews well and you're good to go and the image quality is lovely! FS5---Sony colors are awful! AWFUL! Canon is frustrating in many ways, but they are vastly superior to Sony in their color science, especially for skin tone. And I'm not alone in this opinion.
  4. Yes, they're very, very close, which is really encouraging. If you have both these cameras you have a fantastic A camera and a B camera, or just buy 2 XC15s, or 1XC15 for audio, and 1 XC10 as a B camera--and you're all set. I did very, very little adjustment to these two shots. both in C-log, both in 4k, both shooting AWB, minor adjustment in exposure.
  5. Took some video of my daughter--one using the C300 Mk ii in C-log, the other using the XC15 using C-log-both in 4k. I had to adjust the footage to get a similar size---used the same LUT and did some minor exposure adjustments--an voila. Which is which? Honestly, I don't remember.
  6. Andrew Reid wrote: "In Tv the shutter speed is all yours to control on the dial – here the camera tries to leave the aperture open unless the scene is too bright for an 180 degree shutter at F2.8 or F5.6 with the ND filter on… then it will stop down the lens automatically. If you ride the shutter to, say, 1/200 the camera will go wide open on the lens and the exposure should be correct even in the brightest direct sunlight at this shutter speed with the ND filter engaged." I have a question about this practice. I can see it can work and work well for exposure. But how does the shutter speed affect the way objects in motion look, most importantly people walking and/or running?
  7. Sorry about the logo being upside down--but I'm left eyed. But left or right matters not, all you have to do is remove the LDCVF and flip it---not need to adjust the eyepiece. A second thing that makes things better is the Canon W58 wide angle lens. I took my 1DX2 and 24-105 lens, set the lens at 24 and shot a scene. Next, I took the XC15 with the WD-H58W wide angle lens attachment and shot the same scene. The result was the XC15 gave a slightly wider angle of view than the 24mm full frame: pretty cool for establishing shots, etc. The downside is these is not threads in the H58W for an ND filter. I used a variable ND over 80mm and used electrical tape to press fit it to the H58W...and it worked fine shooting in bright sunlight.
  8. I've owned both of these cams, and sold an XC10 to help purchase the XC15--totally worth it IMO for much better and cleaner audio. For some I do have a suggestion---replace the LCD viewfinder Canon supplies with a Kinotenik LCDVF 3C. You can fine the item and compatibility on these links: http://www.kinotehnik.com/products/lcdvf/overview http://www.kinotehnik.com/products/lcdvf/compatibility The 3C LCDVF and frame fit the XC10/15 perfectly, give you a much larger and clearer image, and much easier access to the Cam's LCD touchscreen. If you need lens corrections you can also order a set of diopter lenses that screw in the viewfinder's eye piece. I've not used it a long time but as far as I can see there's no downside to this option---and if ever you decide you don't like it you can always remove the frame and go back to the OEM view finder Canon supplies. I learned about this because I bought one for my 1DC---and it worked great---so I decided the check how it would work on the XC15 and it was balls on perfect. In the US if you decided to buy one you can find them at B&H. Links are as follows: Link for diopters for 3C lens: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=kinotehnik+lcdvf3clens&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ps&typedValue=LCDVF Link for LCDVF https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/887720-REG/Kinotehnik_lcdvf3c_LCDVF_Viewfinder_for_Canon.html Anyone else have experience with these items???
  9. IMO it has nothing to do with no C-Log. I have already installed Andrew's C-log and it works fine. It's not identical to Canon's C-log but it has fine dynamic range, grades well, and lots of LUTs work well with it. I just think colors aren't quite as good--and the full frame 1.25 crop of the 1dc is pretty damned special. And I agree with you 100% on your comments about the 1dc. The only reason I solid it for the 1dx2 was for the DPAF, which I need for the shooting I do (almost all video). Otherwise, you could not have taken the 1dc from my hands with a crowbar.
  10. I'm not a techno-guy. My impression is based on the look and how it affects me. Maybe I'll change my mind in time, but as good as the video image of the 1dxmk2 is it didn't knock me out like the color/image of the 1dc. If I had DPAF in the 1dc I think I'd have hard time selling it to buy the 1dxm2.
  11. It's fantastic when it comes to autofocus---awesome. The image is really wonderful---but, now I'm speaking about video only--I don't think the video image is quite as good as the 1dc. If I was physically able to do the kind of shooting I like to do and handle the manual focusing of the 1dc I would not buy a 1dx2. Frankly, I was wowed at the image of the 1dc like I've never been wowed by any other camera I've owned.
  12. Just received my new XC15 with XLR attachments. Just threw this up after a hard day's work in the shop---so you can sample the quality of the audio. I also used the new Production Camera custom profile that is also in the Canon C300 M2. But this is just a sample of the audio for talking head stuff:
  13. If they did I'd just take the free one and let someone else pay for the other.
  14. Yes, I did. I also sold my XC10 to help pay for the 1dx2. Now, I'm waiting for the XC15 to arrive I prepaid to B&H.
  15. Looking forward to the review. I just bit the bullet and ordered one from BH. But speaking of reviews, have you given up on the promised XC10 review??? I've been looking forward to that review. Have the XC15s arrived in Deutschland? Your C-log works a treat. Put several folks on to it.
  16. Shot in 4k with the Canon C300 Mk II in C-log, and hand graded. But I also used Andrew's three C-log LUTS and they worked beautifully on the C300 MK2 C-log footage.
  17. I'm curious which of you own or have used a 1DX Mk II and have used it for video....especially if you've also shot video with a 1DC? How would you compare their color and image?
  18. Just posted this today. Footage a bit rough--but no grading here, just minor exposure adjustments to make corrections the best I know how. Rough shooting because of harsh sunlight going in and out with frequency. But I wanted to see how good the colors and footage would be out of the camera.
  19. Thanks for cluing me in on the M-mount. I still don't like the look of the cam. Not at all. Make a mirrorless look like a mirrorless with it's logical convenience, like the XC10. I'd spring for the M5 if it had 4k. But right now I'm trying to future proof my cams to a certain degree as well as have everything work as a system. Alas, that's how Canon rolls in 2016---no obligator 4k. WTF! Most of what I do are educational videos for my business--where I so a lot of teaching--so, talking head stuff. The XC10 gives such great images and 4k I can downsample to my business educational site, and it's so easy to get great results with it the addition of XLR for improved audio alone is enough for me to upgrade now. As the saying goes, professional video is all about professional audio--ain't it the truth. Plus, the attachment for the XLR audio can also be used for the C300 Mk II. Yes, the 300 Mk II already has XLR, but it's part of an LCD and adds a lot of weight in hand held shooting. This XLR unit that's interchangeable on the XC15 and C300 Mk II is lighter and will make outdoor hand held shooting easier, since out of doors I never use the LCD. The other thing is the XC15 will have all those cinema profiles to match the C300 Mk II...AND a waveform...!! YeSSSSSS!!! I love using waveform to help me with Log exposure---it's indispensable IMO. But I must confess I seldom take the C300 out---it's 95% a studio cam--worth every penny, IMO. PS: You might be waiting till Hell freezes over until Canon comes out with an XC model with a constant 2.8---I'm just saying. Canon giveth, Canon taketh away, and Canon depriveth. Arrrrrrgh!
  20. I found a page with the features of the M5 revealed. I really don't like the looks of it. Nothing remarkable about the specs, and what is this M-mount? But I've made a decision--I do a LOT of talking head videos, and I think I'm going to upgrade to the XC15. But in order to do it I've got to sell something, and I think it's going to be the 80D. I bought it new in the winter of 2016 from Wolf camera her in Dallas. I'll probably put it on eBay. It's really a new camera. I don't think I've shot more than 3 hours of footage on it and done 50 photos. I hate to sell it, but the XC15 makes more sense for what I do. If you're interested in it let me know. I'd can sell it with my STM lenses--which are very good. If you're interested let me know. I was thinking of selling it with the 15-55 zoom 2.8 for 1,300.00. Let me know, otherwise, I'll put it up on eBay--probably tomorrow.
  21. All these lenses are good. The reason I recommended the 17-55 was that is has BOTH IS AND a constant 2.8. The issue for me is being able to get more light into the cam, a shallower DOF, while hand held. The only full frame 2.8 with great DOF and stabilization is the Tamron--beautiful image, weights a TON, and has a curved convex lens that prevents the use of a variable ND filter---Arghhhh. But in the right place with the right light it works a treat---and is less $$$ than Canon.
  22. I don't think your matching of C-Log between two cams will be automatic. Some experimentation with exposure and white balance will be part of the solution, but there will be some necessity of grading. I know most of the pros here use Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve. I suppose someday I'll have to work on learning it. But if you get FCPX and the color grading plugin called Color Finale you will find it's fantastic . I graded the footage of Mary with Color Finale and FCPX--and I think it's pretty good results. And Color Finale is only $99.00...worth it's weight in gold.
  23. Here's another full frame you can use on both crop and full frame lenses: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1081813-REG/canon_9521b002_ef_24_105mm_f_3_5_5_6_is.html Its very good--and quiet.
  24. Yes, it is very good. I will say this though: it is much bigger and heavier than other Canon STM lenses. Apparently, it is built on the lines of the larger, full frame lenses. This means one thing: it's going to make some noise in the focusing operations. Now, if occasional focusing sound is not critical in your walkabout shooting you'll love this lens--it's sharp, the colors are beautiful, and the constant 2.8 is terrific. The other STM zoom lenses are also wonderful in image, but no constant f stop, and nothing lower than f.3.5.---but much smaller, lighter, and super quiet. When I'm walking about sound is seldom critical regarding what I'm doing, so i love this lens. The stabilization is excellent, and the heaviness of the lens make the stabilization even better. If you got the lens I don't think you would be disappointed.
