As using software to capture and process becomes more intuitive and creative, more and more people will go between stills and video on a whim. Smartphones and their apps are leading the charge in blurring this line and fostering this immediate urge to share across all demographics. While the camera companies drip out specs to outsize marketing and hype because really the optical tech is reaching a point where there is little qualitative difference in what our eyes can perceive, the smartphone, software and new media distribution platforms are smartly not only taking advantage of these hardware advancements but figuring out how to get it out of the way so we can use it persistently. This Nikon release is just another example of a race to the bottom. They understand what it takes to make a good image, but they lost the thread in the why and how these days. It's not about putting both video and photo in the camera, or the specs, it's about how to integrate this technology into the fabric of our lives.

But most of the younger demo is using smart phones to upload pics to share. I guess for video too. Damn, both are up a creek without a paddle. What these cameras need are better UI's then these menu screens with tabs and a laundry list of features. They need to fire the people designing this crap in every company, not just Sony. My iphone 5 can take great pictures and video, edit those pictures and video! and then share it on any messaging app plus upload it to youtube, vimeos, instagram, flckr, etc... Meanwhile, I'm here fiddling with my latest mirrorless trying to figure out how to take a 5s self-timer...

Youtube is a cottage industry of promoting and marketing amateur videography. It's inundated with reviews, tutorials and vlogs. I don't think most people buying these hybrids are already professionals. They are just shooting stuff without lighting, rigs or filters and just uploading it to the cloud for kicks.

I imagine there's a lot of people who wanted to grade the 10bit files in Resolve. I wonder if the new codec in the summer release will play nicer with these programs. Hopefully it will be early summer.

This person contacted blackmagic about resolve not supporting gh5 10bit files and got this reply: "You are correct, the 10 bit files recorded by the GH5 are not supported in the free release of Resolve. As such you would require the Studio release in order to be able to import and work with these files. It is worth noting that this is NOT a BUG IN THE APPLICATION. I will mark this ticket as a feature request for the attention of the development team. I cannot comment on the possibility of future features or give a timescale for the development of such features or updates. In the mean time I would RECOMMEND TRANSCODING your files to a supported format such as ProRes or DNxHD." (Technical Support of Blackmagic Design).

Cinelike-V skin tones look nice in sunlight with auto white balance. I wish tests to compare 10bit vs 8bit would include more shots of shade and sunlit areas. 4K V-log test but unspecified if it's 10bit. It must be difficult to get decent skin tone.

A6500 seems slightly better dynamic range than Cine-D 10bit, but I wonder if v-log will give it the extra 2 stops some are touting. RS is terrible on a6500 but that's par for the course.

yeah, I think it will just refocus and not track but I can't be certain since none of my cameras now have touch screens. Maybe someone else can clear this up especially for the gh5 to stay on topic. I was just saying that for whatever reason even tap to focus can be flaky probably on any camera.

I just watched your Saigon Central Post Office video and you are getting better images out of the g85 than anything I've seen from the gh5, especially the interior shots. I like that you don't try to change the fundamental imaging of the camera to make it something it's not, but work with the camera's inherent characteristics.

It happens on my sony rx100 iv. Someone's face will cover most of the screen, but it will still af on the background until I press to refocus. It's okay for vlogging, personal stuff and some pro work like with gimbals, but af is still going to be flaky at times on any camera these day. If you mean just tap to focus, it was flaky at times on the nx1 as well. For me, I just want the camera to stay focus on something and not hunt. I could care less about transition speed since I will manually focus if that is important. I wonder if the gh5 can do this within it's settings.

I thought Samsung's problem for video users was h265 and underdeveloped ecosystem. But this lack of features seems counterproductive to even Nikon's bottom dollar.

Some of the tight shots with shallow dof looks nice and some of the wides look messy. The music is painful so you might want to mute this one.

Just don't use quotes when someone didn't say it. Is that so difficult to understand? Just write that I am implying whatever you think I am implying instead of saying that I said exactly what you think I am implying when I didn't say it. People will read it without context and think I said those words. There is a huge distinction there. Would you like it if I misattributed quotes to you on the Internet? Also, even though you are going around misquoting people as well, it's not as a grievous example as what Andy was doing since you did use the word imply, but it's still wrong. Just write: You implied that it's filmic because of the lighting, etc... And the funny thing is, after all this, that wasn't what I was implying. The implication was that even though the image looked nice because of all these techniques and the weather, it still looked videoy, which is fine. It has its own aesthetic. But let's be honest, the film stock aesthetic is the gold standard we are referencing when we nitpick these cameras even if you don't want to admit it. It has nothing to do with being a snob or some kind of image classism (which is ridiculous), but that we dream to be able to produce images the same quality as well produced movies on these budget cameras. Even shooting weddings, videographers are more and more pushing to get cinema-like images. I now even see some of them are referring to themselves as filmmakers which to me is fine. They are using images to tell a story. That's not to say images that can't yet live to that gold standard should be dismissed because, yes, content is king, but this is a camera forum. I don't want to get a lecture from neophytes about the importance of storytelling and technique when I share an opinion about a new camera.
