  1. @mercer Im doing some side by side comparisons directly with the 1DC soon so Ill make sure to @ you on it when they are uploaded. Believe me, its taken me forever to justify getting rid of my 1DC. Its been my favorite camera. But I'm making 4 youtube videos a week and I need an easier to work with 4k codec.
  2. Again, I come back to my needs. They have totally changed since when I bought my 1DC. At the time I needed a workhorse 4k camera that could handle the elements well. I literally bought the camera using the budget for rental gear for a two month shoot I did in Mexico. The client wanted 4k and stills. I was in the middle of the forest and running around handheld. The GH5 wasn't out yet and my only option at the time was a used 1DC or a7Sii cause I wanted a camera that performed well in low light and was weather proof. Here are some frame grabs from my 1DC 4k when I was in Mexico, all shot Clog and graded in color finale: If I want good stills and want to keep my GH5S rigged for video in a cage with my monitor ETC, I will more than likely but a Fuji X100 like all the other cinematographers out there who use the X100 for BTS stills and family pictures. At first I was saving my pennies for a RED. Then I had high hopes for fuji...but was disappointed with it. Now Im on the Panny bandwagon. Wasn't impressed with GH5 at all image quality wise really....huge fan of GH5S. GH5 makes people look like they had a bad spay tan.
  3. Thanks! Those stills look great for several reasons outside of the camera. We were shooting on Leica R glass, with Tiffen Black Pro Mist filters, we hazed the house and I hired a real DP to shoot it! Lighting, lensing, and filters work wonders. @DBounce Totally agree! If I were blending stills more then 1DX/ 1DC would TOTALLY make more sense. I LOVE taking stills with my 1DC....I just rarely if ever do. Im not a photographer by any means. the only things I take pictures of is my baby and my family. 10MP raw images are totally fine for my google photos backup of my family. @mercer hollywood films WILL MOST CERTAINLY be shot on GH5S. In fact, part of the reason it exists is literally by request from Top Gear DP needing a GH5 without IBIS. 1DC has been out longer obviously so its had time to be in the field.
  4. I am a 1DC owner and have shot with the 1DX II in the past. The 1DC has mojo the 1DX II doesn't have for sure. More filmic color science. However, 1DC isnt a logical and wise choice. There are serious red pixel issues with it and its seriously a pain in the butt to use. No AF, so I always have either my Zacuto gratical or my SmallHD Focus attached to it for focus peaking and waveform. I have been using a loaner GH5S for my reviews and am seriously considering retiring the 1DC for the GH5S. My needs have changed. I used to be a freelance director/ DP and now Im a YouTuber. Having an unusable 4k until converting to ProRes is a pain. No iPhone app or any type of AF for video is a pain. And the thing is a beast to hold and carry around. I so wish Canon would do canon log on the 1DX II and give us a better codec. Thats all thats holding it back. The GH5S should have been called something different. Its not a GH5, its just in a GH5 body. It should have been called EVA-1 mini. It was completely designed by the same team that designed the varicam and EVA-1. Not the photo department. The color science and features the GH5S has makes it a much more practical camera for my use.. I will use a speed booster and the same canon mounted Contax glass I am currently using on my 1DC with the exact same crop factor and cinema 4k....IN 10BIT but with focus peaking, wave forms on screen and an app that can work with shooting myself and locking focus using the app. I am really impressed with it all around and I am not a fan of IBIS. I have a MoVI M5 that produces the most cinematic motion available and IBIS makes the MoVI footage act wonky. I also love the look of a camera on a shoulder rig. IBIS makes shoulder rig stuff look too fluid and not natural. This is why Panasonic made this camera. For actual working professionals who recognize that IBIS is truly not desired all that much...IBIS is a great TOOL to have on the tool belt for sure though... attached are some frames from a music video I shot on 1dc.
  5. I’ve been doing tests and am shooting like 5 different reviews on this camera for Kinotika and my personal channel and to me, honestly, the GH5S is game changer. I’m noticing significant improvement in skin tones and color science here along with better autofocus with the “hack” than the GH5. I’ve been comparing the two cameras using the same settings and the GH5S does seem to be faster. Also, I love the newer sensor size. Just that little extra amount of sensor size allows for the Olympus 12-100 zoom to be the best lens of all time! Constant f4 was always a problem with this lens, but now with the low light performance it’s a non issue. That 12mm becomes a 21mm equivalent which makes it the perfect “vlog” focal length and with the ability to zoom to 100mm... you have a 21mm-175mm which is unheard of. You get fabulous IS with the lens so you’re not missing out by not having ibis and call me crazy, but I’m not a fan of ibis. It’s always ruined the shots for me. 80% of the time on the GH5 it’s great, but sometimes you just see that wobble and it ruins the shot in my opinion. Lens IS never does that for me. So: GH5S + Olympus 12-100 = best walk around kit. There’s so many things with the panny cameras that just make my life better and more pain free too. Like the hdmi implementation. Having all your settings, audio levels, etc carry over hdmi is so incredible. I even love the stills off the GH5s. Really clean and 10mp is fine for me. Less megapixels than my iPhone but the photos are fine for my use (family portraits) I’m buying the GH5S with the 12-100 with a speed booster for my contax Zeiss glass and actually going to sell my 1DC for this. I’m so happy with the 10bit files and vlog. This camera makes me happy. The GH5 never did.
  6. This was such a simple shoot, but the story really just fell into place and came together. This is a little piece on my Great Uncle that I shot several years ago on my 7D and a 24mm L Prime lens. This video changed my career...
  7. Best part of this announcement is the discovery of 2 things: 1: a new sensor design from canon (probably the new aps-c standard for the next few years). 2: Digic 8 processor. Clearly this new processor can handle 4K paired with the new sensor. So a Canon 7D or 90D soon with better video implementation coming soon? Also, imagine a 1DX mkiii with dual Digic 8 processors.
  8. I guess that’s no big deal. I’ll use my smallhd focus monitor anyways. That monitor solves so many issues for every camera lol.
  9. Ok Andrew... you convinced me. I need to test it out. I’ll add it to my list of cameras to try! Lol. Isnt there something weird with the focus peaking if I remember correctly?
  10. I think it’s just two years too late unfortunately. Things have moved on. We need IBIS and AF these days I guess. It’s been almost like a second revolution in video from the dslr movement. I just hired a full time shooter/editor to help me with my YT videos and he’s never used a large sensor camera that doesn’t have good AF. He is fresh out of college and they learned on the C100mkii and 70D. I handed him my 1DC and he didn’t know what to do. I told him he needs to learn..but still, it’s going to be a whole new crop of kids coming up in the film industry never touching manual focus lol
  11. Ok. I’m curious now. I missed the NX1 boat. Is it worth trying out? H.265 is totally native now and it’s really the only camera that really takes advantage of it. Im curious... what’s the articles or forum posts I need to read up on it? Wasn’t there a hack for it? Is there any speed booster options? Which lenses should I get? Would love to go native with the autofocus. I think it’d be a fun camera to review because it’s now fully relevant with h.265 with High Sierra. Is there a true log on this camera? Which profiles are best to shoot on? Any weird quirks I need to know?
  12. Wow. Got some great feedback here. I’m thinking I won’t be satisfied with the smaller WR lenses so I’ll get the 23mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.2 for sure. I think I’ll wait for the 8-16 for my UWA. Especially for the WR and the constant f2.8. Also, since I’m shooting 4K with the slight crop, 8-16 is more usable. I’ll also pickup the 16-55 as my workhorse.
  13. Ok, so now that the X-H1 is here, along with the Fujinon cine lenses, I can count on Fuji to continue to innovate and be a player in the video space. I’m considering getting a full Fuji kit (and still hold onto my 1DC because...still the best) because I love the color science and jpeg image quality. Also, I hear the autofocus is good enough on Fuji to be reliable for pro work. I’m willing to invest in this system and treat it as my workhorse potentially Im conflicted with what lenses to get. The Fujinon Cine lenses are expensive...but not unobtainable. If anything, that’s all I could afford. Just the one 18-55 for now and maybe later the telephoto one. I’d get parfocal, better focusing, and Cine optics. Id loose autofocus though, and if I’m going to loose autofocus I’d rather just put a speed booster on it and use my CONTAX ZEISS glass. So that takes me to the Fuji XF mount lenses. The 10-24, 16-55, 50-140 make the most sense for the range, but they are big and heavy, plus... they zoom the wrong way.... not a huge deal but annoying for sure! So then I go to the smaller 23, 35, 50 WR lenses. Probably paired with the 18mm f2 to round it out. Are they any good? Compared to the top end lenses do they have sexy bokeh? Or should I just bite the bullet and go to the top end primes? which takes me to the 14mm f2.8, 16mm f1.4, 23mm f1.4, 35mm f1.4, 56mm f1.2. With all of these lenses I get most all the focal ranges I need, with fast optics. Is it worth the $4,000 to get these lenses over the smaller more convenient f2 WR’s? And at this price shouldn’t I just prefer the Fujinon Cine lens anyways? Is it worth doing this for the ability to have autofocus and fast aperture? I mean, I already have small fast primes using a speed booster and my Contax glass... so should I get the Fuji XF zooms then? As you can see... I have a problem. Good thing I review gear for a living now, otherwise my wife would throw me in an insane asylum.
  14. @Mattias Burling @jonpais No time code but look at the blacks. This could be just a by product of the film simulation modes... but I’m seeing some brown in those blacks.
  15. Is it just me or am I seeing some bad IR pollution in the video? It doesn’t look Blackmagic bad, but I’ll need to run some tests using an IR Cut filter
  16. Awesome features that we couldn’t see in the leaks. Nice firmware implementation and because it’s Fuji, we know it’ll get better over time! Heck... in two years this may be a 6K camera! https://youtu.be/V5KOvcoUeh8
  17. I just read through the brochure and was hoping to see something stating that the rolling shutter performance was improved. Do we know if this camera could have better rolling shutter in 4K than the XT2?
  18. Only a few hours away from the official announcement. I anticipate lots of blogs like newsshooter and cinema5d to have some video tests and reviews since neither of them have covered the leaks. Nofilmschool and Andrew here obviously covered it so they aren’t under any NDA. should be an interesting camera and a welcome tool to have in our arsenal. Kinotika will pre order it and I’ll be doing reviews on it so let me know any specific things you want to see.
  19. Ya and the raven really isn’t much of a discount either once you build it out. Red stuff is all hand built and comes backed with extreme warranty and repair. I wonder if we will loose that trust that’s there now with them. Still really cool stuff. Excited about the future here. I believe the helium sensor is one of the best out there these days. Especially with the new IPP2 color science. They really have come a long way thanks to the millions from Netflix and Amazon
  20. This is huge news. I’m really excited about this. Red has raw recording down. It’s the only platform that works on all NLE’s and is as convenient as loading in raw stills into Lightroom. I’ve been dreaming of the day when they would put r3d inside of a dslr sized body. I hope this pans out and that it actually happens. It would make red lots of money I think and would potentially make shooting raw the new norm.
  21. Doesn’t Fuji have really bad auto aperture clicking and banding from LEDs? I hope they resolved this. Vloggers tend to shoot in either full program auto or in my case, shutter priority. If when the aperture changes you see clicky steps then I won’t be very happy. Also I saw in the spec sheet that it has an “anti flicker” mode. I assume that may address the banding from LEDs.
  22. After an extensive test in Alaska...I found that the Canon 6D Mkii SUCKS BALLS! Casey Neistat and Peter McKinnon are SO wrong. This camera is total garbage. I can't believe Canon would even release a camera like this with the price being what it is. Totally unacceptable. No ALL-I, worse ISO performance than 80D, No headphone jack. Its a total POS. Let me know your thoughts.
  23. I would recommend against Vari ND and get a nice Tiffen ND kit with XUME magnetic filter adapters. I have this same kit and using the magnets are a breeze! Vari ND is always terrible because it takes the natural reflections out of people’s skin tones. Not to mention the price you pay for one with minimal image shift. Also Vari ND vignettes really easily. But mostly the reason I don’t use them is the way people look with them. It’s two polarizers put together so it’s going to remove those reflections.
  24. Thanks for clearing that up! Makes a lot of sense now
