  1. Ya it was out of focus. Due to time I just left it. I didn't have time to go back and reshoot
  2. Thanks man. Im starting a YouTube channel actually. Wanna start posting videos more regularly. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFyIEjsL3T-Bn5xZEKYVvqw I love that. So simple. So great. Im seeing a pendulum swing back to Canon from my colleagues who switched to sony recently. Those Canon colors are so great and the Canon cameras are really well thought out from a users perspective. The reds and blues can be a little weird though when you actually just need red or blue colored things to look natural and not skintone as your priority.
  3. Wow this post is getting some great comments. Thank you for taking the time to weigh in. My saying the C100 is done was an exaggeration for sure. Its a great camera and we have two of them here and use them every day. By no means is it done. However, I wouldn't buy one new or even used unless it were just a B cam. I shot a feature doc last year that had a limited theatrical release and some of the best shots on the big screen in it were shot with the internal C100 in Canon Log. Its totally still great. I was just exaggerating. C100 mk2 is much much better and I didn't have one to test otherwise I would have added that too. 1DC is such a freaking LOVE/HATE. I think if you think of it more as a RED or Blackmagic Cinema Camera and not a C300 you can enjoy it more. Its pure image goodness. Nothing else. And for what it is and for what it does...I don't think its comparable to anything else for the price it is currently second hand. I freaking love it and I cant wait to see what it looks like on the big screen when we finish this second doc. C300 mk2 is the best ever. If you can afford it....its the one to get right now. I wish the slow motion options were better...but from an ease of use standpoint and at an image standpoint...we love it and are thinking of getting one or just continuing to rent it.
  4. I had some free time today and so I went into the studio and did some tests. They aren't very proper and they aren't the best in the world...but hopefully this will help someone out there! I used some of the EOSHD Canon picture profiles for the 1DC part so check that out! I am by no means a professional colorist. I tried to balance the images best I could in Resolve. You will notice that some shots are a tad blurry....I'm sorry about that. I had continuous autofocus on. Here are my findings: Canon 1DC: It's totally still relevant. The fact that this camera came out in 2012 and is competing with the new C300 mkii is incredible. Official Canon Log: Is great. It grades really nicely and is really clean and natural looking. Totally recommended. The 4k 4:2:2 8bit is much better than the 1080p 4:2:0 of the C100. EOSHD C-Log: Its good for sure but not as good as built in Canon Log on the 1DC. I need to play more with it but I had some troubles with it. Other EOSHD profiles: These are fun! I love the Monochrome one a lot! C100: Its done. Too old. Image is soft. Has terrible artifacts. Built in codec is total crap. Get this guy out of here. Wide DR if handled properly could be a good profile to shoot most things on. Its not too flat so the low bitrate doesn't fall apart as much. C300 mkii: This is the best camera of the three (as it should be) but not by much in relation to 1DC! Canon Log and Canon Log 2 aren't very good. Canon Log 3 seems just about right as far as nailing the color science. Everything balanced really nicely and looked great. 4K 10Bit really holds together nicely when grading. I thought 1080p 12bit would be stronger...but I really didn't notice much of a difference between it and the 4k footage. Slow motion: It's OK. There are other cameras coming out that have better slow motion abilities. To go past 60fps you have to crop in on the sensor by 2x which turns the crop from being 1.4x (Super35) to 2.8! That's more than micro four thirds.
  5. I am reminded of the magic of the camera every time I do a shoot with it. No it was at a dance studio in East Nashville
  6. Canon has threatened ML if they touch the 1DC they will unleash their lawyers on them. It will more than likely never happen unfortunately. http://www.eoshd.com/2013/01/1d-x-has-traces-of-1d-c-firmware-but-magic-lantern-will-never-touch-1d-series-as-canon-threatens-potential-hackers-with-legal-trouble/
  7. I did a shoot yesterday with my 1DC and Contax Zeiss glass and loved the results. It was a nice reminder how great it is. Low light, color science, and full frame all great on it. Such a clean but beautiful image. Still gonna hold onto the 1DC until I do proper GH5 tests.
  8. You guys are awesome. Great advice. I agree 100%.
  9. I love my 1DC. I pre ordered a GH5. I feel like it'll be a serious competitor and a true "upgrade" in a lot of ways.........but I can't get away from that OH MY GOSH so beautiful mojo my 1DC makes. But if the GH5 is a serious upgrade then I would love to sell my 1DC and Zacuto Gratical (lack of focus peaking tool). Every dollar counts for where I am right now in life trying to pay off debt and move to LA Im not making any rash moves until I get my hands on the GH5 and do some tests but would love to hear your thoughts.
  10. This is a great thread because I have been thinking about this myself. For video I think for zoom lenses (especially with IS) there is none other better than Canon. For IQ on digital sensors, I personally love using vintage glass. I own a set of contax Zeiss lenses that perform so well on canon, Sony, red, everything. So my ideal kit is: Canon: 16-35, 24-105, 70-200 with a full vintage CONTAX or Leica R prime kit.
  11. 1DC with my contax Zeiss 50mm 1.4 all c log
  12. Indeed it is! Haha. Ben is a good friend
  13. Hey guys. Wanted to share a recent project I directed for a company here in Nashville called Ramsey Solutions. They teach people how to handle their money and get out of debt. We did a series of videos for their personalities for Christmas campaigns. Below are some BTS shots and screen grabs from the shoot. Here is a link to the peice: Password: 1234 We shot on the Arri Amira and used Cooke S4i primes. I graded the project with Color Finale in FCPX. The green screen stuff was poorly shot and we used a C100 so the shots of Rachel are pretty muddy. We had a pretty minor budget but the project turned out pretty cool! LMK what you think and if you have any questions. And yes I was rocking a dirty stache at the time
  14. Shoot everything at 1080p. Don't shoot yourself in the foot with 4K. Although I do like shooting ceremonies at 4K for the post crop. Canon skin tones are the best. Even a used 70d would be better than Sony IMO. The C100 mk1 and 2 are the best cameras for weddings IMO. I've shot a few recently with C100 mk1 and my 1DC and it's super nice. Here's a teaser I did with 1DC/ C100 combo: You MUST MUST MUST remember that wedding films are CONSUMER PRODUCTS. DONT EVER FORGET THIS. THIS IS 6 years of experience and over 300 weddings shot of experience talking to you. These people aren't professional filmmakers. They aren't producers. They aren't film snobs. All they want is pretty shots of them on their big day. If you shot it all with a t2i and a 50mm 1.8 they would love it because it looks "cinematic". Don't get caught up with the gear when it comes to shooting weddings. That's the biggest waste of time and money. The couples simply don't give a shit. I hope you enjoy it. Weddings are a fantastic way to get lots of experience and become a ninja shooter
  15. And yet in spite of all the negatives against canon that would clearly be a deal breaker on other camera manufacturers to not include, Canon cameras continue to prove they are workhorses that produce very pleasing results. Kinda like the new MacBook Pros :P
  16. The a7 and modern Sony cameras sensors in general are simply incorrect. They don't look right.
  17. Wow! Awesome. Thanks for sharing!
  18. Same here dude. Believe me I tried but the musician wanted the grade to look like that.
  19. YES!!! Our audio guy was so pissed about that fan for the interviews. He got a room tone with the fan noise in it so he can paint it out in post but kinda a pain that he has to do that. Without the fan the camera started to overheat after like 10 minutes and it wasn't hot where we were at all. Ya the DR isn't the best in the world but its fine. But you can see in some of the blown out spots in the images above that you're right the hot spots do look "digital"
  20. Here are some rough graded screen grabs from our shoot. All shot RAW Cinema 4K to 4K ProRes HQ. Also, here is a DB link to the ungraded TIFFs: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/xltljff7euy65iq/AABIShq-mPu2YdYVmLRqpRUIa?dl=0 I included a chip chart on some of the interview setups too if you guys wanna have a crack at it.
  21. We shot this whole thing with the 1dc and Leica R glass. Really loved that. I personally own a set of CONTAX Zeiss lenses and love the look they create.
  22. I'm still hoping on seeing a proper 1DC mkii. Are there any rumors of this happening? Have we categorically heard from Canon that the 1DX II is the upgrade to the 1DC? Canon has new Cinema upgrades that would be nice to add to a 1DC II like Canon Log 3 gamma and Wide DR picture profile. I use old manual lenses on my 1DC so autofocus isn't a huge deal to me but is a nice thought for VLogs and steadicam/ gimbal use.
  23. The C500 is way sharper and cleaner than the 1DC 4K and I'm sure it's because of the lack of compression of course. The C500 image I'm looking at is one of the best images I've worked with next to Amira. I'm convinced for sure. Really cool stuff. I haven't noticed the noise or aliasing but I've just been looking at dailys on my laptop. Need to see a proper image on my 27" 5k iMac. Going to upload some screen grabs here today.
  24. Sorry for the miscommunication. I meant slow to work with as in the camera itself moves slow. It boots up slow. Using the odyssey recorder is clunky. It feels like an old camera for sure. The sensitivity of the camera is really good!
