I'm shooting a music video next week. Then one day later a 2 week documentary in Mexico City. Then after that finishing up a feature doc that will go to theaters in the fall. We shot most of the feature doc on the c300. I'm on the fence with: used C300. C100 mkii (I still think I'd rather do c300 tho). FS5. a7S II with Atomos and XLR adapter. Help me decide

Ya I love the profile. It's great. Grades really nicely.
-
Bro. I have found the best profile! I've shared it with so many people because they all want it it's so good. it's got a very "Canon" look to it and it grades so nicely. It really adds a ton of depth to the image that lacks in the normal Sony profiles. It's all about that "color depth". THE SONY PROFILE Black Level: 0 (it's disabled in s-log2 anyway) Gamma: S-log2 Black Gamma: Range- Narrow, Level -7 Knee: auto Color Mode: sgamut3.cine Saturation: +32 Color Phase: -2 (this is for a7sII and a6300, for original a7s use -5) Color Depth: +6 (all of them) Detail: -6 Expose 1.5 to 2 stops over. You may need to dial the green tint out in the white balance shift. Let me know how you like it. I found this profile somewhere on dvxuser and have fallen in love with it. Now all my friends shoot on it

My favorite camera has hung it up! I can't be more proud of Elle and the team at DB. They seriously pulled off a miracle over there. Sad to see them go. What a damn good camera. https://www.digitalbolex.com/thank-you/

In the US of A I have not found a used C500 for under $7-8k. I've actually been watching for the last few months. Idk how you found it for $6k.

So sorry but "effect" not "affect"

Gh4 for the price is hard to beat. I loved using it on a doc recently in Nicaragua.
-
Yes. I posted about it a while ago in Eds thread about 1dc and bmmcc. Shot a wedding with the d16 with bmpcc speed booster and 18-35. Loved it. Did a confusing test with it too. It doesn't hit the sensor at all and digital Bolex has officially confirmed that themselves too
-
Ya that's the whole point of Bolex. Raw CCD 35. What else you want? Lol. Rent one and try it out. It's a gorgeous camera. I've loved my times using it
-
I talked to Elle about that at NAB. She said that would be the dream. But for now with the BMPCC speed booster you do get super 35 already and it looks great.

I will personally disagree. I've looked through all my a7sii footage and am not happy with it at all. Total shit sensor in my opinion and should only be used when needing low light. Gh4 is so easy and clients don't know the difference. Everything about gh4 makes more business sense. 1/3 of the cost. Longer battery life. Easier to grade. I'm DP for a possible feature length theatrical doc this year. Still in development. We will be shooting on C300 II but that's a different thing really because we have budget and it's being released in theaters. To own and operate your own camera I feel you should only get what you can afford. I'm a 26 year old newly wed with debt and a puppy. $1,200 camera vs a $3,000 camera that has a worse workflow and minor upgrades over a $1,200 isn't appealing to me in my situation. I need the most bang for buck. I'm still considering getting a used C100 mk1. Great work horse My opinion which has matured over the last 6 years in the industry is you own the camera that you can afford that get 90% of what you need done and done easily and well. You rent the rest

I need to try Standard next.

Interesting finds. I have done loads of tests with a7s II with PP doing everything you mentioned and the thing that I found really helped was when I adjusted the color depth. I did a commercial shoot in Vegas during NAB week with a7s II and was finally pleased with what I got. BUT STILL it's too much tweaking and it still just doesn't feel right like Canon color science. I'm not saying GH4 is near Canon or Arri colors... But I love the 4K IQ and with Natural the colors are more than enough for average clients. Plus you could buy 3 gh4s for the price of 1 a7s2 at the moment. Honestly my recent findings from this rediscovery has only made me more excited for GH5 than anything. I'm still renting the Gh4 on this trip. Not planning on buying any time soon. Here are some before and after grade with the picture profile I have been using on a7s II internal that I really like. Found it on dvxuser and did some modifications to it. Found it to lean towards the green tint so I had to dial that out with white balance shift. Best a7s II 4K internal profile I have used: Black Level: 0 (it's disabled in s-log2 anyway) Gamma: S-log2 Black Gamma: Range- Narrow, Level -7 Knee: auto Color Mode: sgamut3.cine Saturation: +32 Color Phase: -2 (this is for a7sII, for original a7s use -5) Color Depth: +6 (all of them) Detail: -6 Expose 1.5 to 2 stops over. Nope! Just internal 4K. I'm exposing to the right as far as I can without clipping and that helps keep the noise down when I pull the exposure down a bit.

I have been shooting a7s ii for the last few months because of....mainly peer pressure... Hate the IQ. The sensor is just total crap IMO. Never ever looks right. Natural PP on the GH4 I am getting colors I never see on sony sensors. Even a7R II in my opinion.
-
Humbled this week while I am in Nicaragua using an older camera that would never be my first choice...the GH4. I have been pleasantly surprised by the image quality once I figured out how to dial in the picture profile. Shooting on Natural with contrast, saturation, sharpness down all the way and using filmconvert to bring the image back to normal. Shooting mostly with Sigma 18-35 with speed booster on a MoVI M5. Love the long battery life. The very efficient 4k compression. The audio preamps for in camera audio. Weather sealed body. Great slow motion in camera. My previous experiences with the GH4 SUCKED. Hated the IQ and never gave it a chance. I think once you dial in a solid workflow and picture profile...you have a killer video machine! More to come later. Ill post in this forum post. Should have a video soon.

I owned BMCC for a year and have shot on Bolex multiple times. Love both of them
-
I disagree. I think it's obvious they skimped on build quality to keep the costs low. There are other materials or even higher quality plastics that have much stronger build that are just as light. I travel the world and broke two BMPCCs in the field because their build was so bad. Ive decided having a strong build quality is as important as image quality. That's just my needs though.
-
I messed with it at NAB. Not a fan of the build quality but I still want to rent one to judge it myself.
-
That's awesome man. Wow. Love it. Guess you're not going Fuji for stills then?
-
my biggest take away is... Did you buy an Olympus Pen-F? Haha! How you like it?
-
Ya. This is the first year none of my friends came with me too. So being a loner all week wasn't fun either
-
Most underwhelming NAB ever. Maybe it's just cause the last three years have been so crazy, but I've been walking around the floors and it's so chill this year. No crazy mobs other than the Philip Bloom fanboys. Nothing that wets my pants this year like I have the last few years. If you didn't make it out this year, you didn't miss anything. The after parties are what it's all about tho and that's why I always come. To make connections and hang out with the best filmmakers in the world.

Fuji rumors just leaked an image of the new Fuji X-T2. It is rumored to possibly shoot 4k. If thats the case, maybe this model will have more professional video features similar to a Sony a7 camera! Hopefully a log profile and good audio preamps. That would be a step in the right direction for Fuji! http://www.fujirumors.com/fujifilm-x-t2-real-life-images-leaked-joystick-new-articulating-screen-more/

Looking forward to your review Mattias!
