Don`t do that, certainly the back part of the vary ND could reduce a little bit the light, but trying to do a DIY vari ND most probably could generate some artifacts that later you will discover in your footage, just don`t waste time and get a new Tiffen vari ND and continue shooting safely….

If I was you, I will go for the scarlet MX and the second hand C100, also get a Ninja Star for the C100 and you are ready for low light…..hey, but this is me, I hate Sony skin-tones so I will always choose first Canon or RED
-
Totally agree, I just got a C100 with DPAF last December for US2,300, also a Ninja Star for US180, the price as more than right and the camera is really good.......and two XLR for my shootgun and a Lavalier, really is a good deal hard to beat...
-
I also think ML is not going to be what it was in the past ever again, there are so many good solutions around for much less money than a 5DmkIV, but anyway if the price drop by a miracle in the next 2-3 years, it could be a solution for many people….canon colors still the best!!!

My whole setup was made for handheld, since I needed the camera for run&gun, and I find out a 4-point of contacts solution that didn`t hear or see anywhere, the solution I always hear was the 3-point of contacts using your hands and an eyecup, but I added a small-rig top plate to the camera and I was able to move back the top handle of the camera until it touches my front, so now with these 4-point of contacts (right hand on the grip, left hand in the base of the camera, right eye in the eyecup, and front in the back of the top handle), and keeping my arms very close to my body, I feel the camera much more stable and reliable….probably I will add some high density foam in the top handle later to feel it even more comfortable…..I also got a monopod to rest sometimes during the shooting, and for interviews….anyway, I am sure around the 5-6 day of shooting I will be praying for a wheelchair…..

I just completed my rig for the C100 and I have found out a way to get four points of contact, so sharing the setting here in case of it is helpful for someone. First you are going to need a small rig top plate and an eye-cup....what i have read and hear in different forums is to use an eye-cup to get 3 point of contacts, one with each hand and the third with the eye-cup, but after installing the small-rig top plate you can move the top-handle of the camera to the bottom and that gives you a four point of contact for the front, I just figured out yesterday and I feel the camera very comfortable and reliable. I am attaching a picture so you have an idea how the top-handle is moved to the back until it make contact with your front.

I hope the next generation (XC20?) will be free of ghosting, and usable up to ISO3200, I really would like to work with a less bulky camera, after adding everything that I need in the C100 I have finished with what you can see in the attached pic.....not going to be under-radar at all.....
-
C100 can be used with a Ninja Star and you get 10-bit 422, of course is not real 10-bit, but a little better than 8-bit….and is totally usable.
-
Sorry mat33 but you can do everything perfectly right with a C100 or C300, the only issue is that the camera is much bigger, and I will have to go to the gym for some months before start the project, I agree if the ghosting was not there I would probably choose an XC10…..which certainly was my first option, luckily we have in our community a cinematographer with so high standards like @kidzrevil who showed us what everybody else missed before I pressed BUY bottom…..
-
Well, some real-life issues could be: you are working in a documentary and you are following your character during the night, you are following him in a forest, in a cave, he start running late in the day and you running behind…..etc….
-
I also think it was exaggerated, the change are around 99.98%, wake up people, Sony is not going to hurt the FS5/FS7, Panasonic is the only one who is going to give us 10bit 422 since they don`t have any other camera above to protect....if you have the money, go for the C300 mkii, you can use that camera for everything, it is a workhorse, I didn`t have the money so I went for the C100 mki with atomos ninja star, 8bit 422, and I am happy with it!!!
-
Jesus!!!!...now you make me very nervous, I didn`t know these cameras also had ghosting, I am going to test the C100 during this weekend to see if I see some ghosting there, I hope not..... @kidzrevil what is the best test to show ghosting in a camera?
-
There is a benefit when shooting in low light, during the day is minimal, since I will do run and gun during the night I really need the Atomos, but the weight is now my concern, the camera is more bulky than I expected and heavier, so I am mentally preparing for the pain during the shooting…..oh yeah, it is going to hurt.
-
Yeap, Atomos Ninja Star is the way to go, you can get a second hand unit very cheap today, but the issue is that the medium camera somehow after the mount in the top, the shotgun, the Atomos recorded, the lavalier, the lens, and the cables, screw, etc, start getting heavier and heavier, and guess what?, you will need a monopod at least in the field…..
-
Probably mat33 got one of the good ones, I am sure the quality was not standard for all the cameras, and a good unit could be a dream, but I agree you have to show us some of your work to see what are your results….
-
I wish you luck, I learned very early than on set reliability is the most important, you are going to face so many issues every day, I hope you already have a good team to support you, and it will be a very good idea to get a B camera, probably a friend can borrow you one, as Mckinise said before, on set everything could fall apart but not the camera, you cannot imagine the anxiety when the camera stop recording and everybody is looking at you asking what is going on…..I was lucky, my camera comeback after three reset!!!!
-
Probably a Gx85, G80, or a GH5 could be a better option to match C100 color, for my C100 I am seriously thinking to get a GX85 as a B camera, I liked the IBIS on it and of course the price, in the second market they are going very cheap now….

Is there a chance president Trump could only allow to enter the country cameras with internal 10-bit 422 codec?
-
G7 all the way, the overheating issue and horribly skin tone of sony cameras is a strong reason to go with Panasonic, it is really an easy choice...

Well, to be honest my budget is very limited, that's the reason I am the kind of person that always buy a camera or lens after watching many reviews, and I will never pre-order anything, I don't have the money to take that risk, I was looking for a run and gun camera, which can go at least ISO3200 and looks good enough, I am traveling SOLO to an island for a doc in March-April and the only light will be the LEDs I will be carrying, so thats the reason of my disappointing with the XC10/15, I was very close to get a XC15 after one of the forum members showed his footage and there was no ghosting, but luckily another member reported later his XC15 also had ghosting, so the quality of the image was not standard and I can not take the risk to get a bad unit….. I feel your pain, ghosting at 800 is a nightmare, very strange Canon made a camera with such fluctuation in quality, if you are lucky and get a good one you really made it, but in my case I don't have the time or the money to take such a risk, so I played safe and went for the C100, it is not 4k, but the camera read in 4k and down-sample to HD….and is a proven workhorse, for now very happy with it, I hope to keep the same opinion after the shooting in the field….
-
I just got my C100 last month, and I am very happy with it, and just a few days ago I got a Ninja Star and the 18-135 STM lens, so almost ready to start a doc, also I got a monopod….now exercising my body to be strong enough to move fluid with the camera, anyone here has a special technique to move really steady with the camera?
-
Well, if you are happy with a camera you really don't sell it, and the depretiation in the market really doesn't matter if you are getting good results, for me it really was a big disappointing, since looks perfect but the ghosting was impossible to avoid from the tests showed here, especially at night with ISO3200, anyway, if in the future I cross my path with one of the XC15 without ghosting (someone get one so not all the cameras had the issue), I will certainly buy it….
-
XC10/15 image quality was my biggest disappointment in 2016, I was looking for something to go gun and run and the camera looks like a dream in paper…..but just in paper, I think all XC10 owners here already sell their cameras and moved to something else, in my case I finally went C100 route, and very happy for now!!!

Since you are going to shoot this weekend I suggest you to focus in the shooting process, make sure you are exposing correctly (please fill with some lights or reflectors) and your whites are OK, if the footage you get is good, later you can do a lot of changes and improvements, if the footage is bad, not much can be done in post. The best software to grade later is Davinci Resolve, which by the way, is free. But you will have to learn how to use it, it is not very complicated but be prepare to spend several hours watching youtube tutorials, also with Davince is very easy to add as many LUT's as you wish, and there are several places where you can get for a few box a lot of different LUT's. Good Luck with your horror movie!!!!

So, what is the final price?…..GH5+LOG+METABONES = 1,999+100+649 = US$2,748.00 really?, mmm!!!, not going to pay that for a m4/3 camera, G85 is a much better option to my eyes….
